CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –12 th July 2020 6 th Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you. Dear Cathedralites Today we look at the caring daring of Deborah. It is one thing to be daring and to take risks especially when we ourselves benefit from it. But to take a risk when there is no reward, for yourself but instead for others, is a particularly God honouring pursuit. Deborah, a judge in Israel, was caring in her daring as she took on the opponents of Yahweh and reminded her own people that they need to get back to worshipping God and God alone. It is the same message for us today I feel. It was lovely to return to Temuka earlier this week. I was vicar there from 1984 to 1988. Temuka is renowned for its pottery. It is robust, long lasting and made superbly. The reason for this is because actually Temuka was the central place for making insulators which needed to be absolutely firm, strong and durable to withstand the weather. But as New Zealand imported insulators from China, the Temuka insulators died. A side product became the pottery. So next time you are in Temuka buy some Temuka pottery and visit the 110 year old beautiful Anglican church on the corner where saints like Penny Ferguson used to worship for many years. This coming week I will be in Auckland attending the Deans conference. Thus far this year we have met via Zoom so it will be good to meet for the first time this year face to face. Cathedrals in New Zealand all face common challenges. It will be good there- fore to spend time in discussion and prayer together. At holiday time Nelson is full of kids mainly who have come to spend time with grand- parents. So, it is lovely for us to have James and his mum and dad Lizzy and Phil staying for a week during the holidays. Today we commission our Extended Communion Team (EC) Graham Allan, John Fitchett, Jane and David Lucas, David Allpress and Jocelyn Smith. After a period of training, they have been licensed by the Bishop to lead the Tuesday Eucharist service using reserved sacrament. I am thrilled that we are building up a robust team so we can guarantee to continue with daily midweek services in our Cathedral. I am grateful for Revds Ren Kempthorne, Murray Campbell, Tapita Ching, Allen Michel, Nigel Whinney, Harvey Ruru and others who also assist in these services. John Laing, our children’s worker, is away down south running a holiday programme. There are very few Christian holiday programmes being run these days, so John is keeping the flame alive.

2 Samuel 7:18-29

18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and said, ‘Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD; you have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come. May this be instruction for the people, O Lord GOD! 20 And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD! 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have wrought all this greatness, so that your servant may know it. 22 Therefore you are great, O LORD God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 Who is like your people, like Israel? Is there another nation on earth whose God went to redeem it as a people, and to make a name for himself, doing great and awesome things for them, by driving out before his people nations and their gods? 24 And you established your people Israel for yourself to be your people for ever; and you, O LORD, became their God. 25 And now, O LORD God, as for the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it for ever; do as you have promised. 26 Thus your name will be magnified for ever in the saying, “The LORD of hosts is God over Israel”; and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, “I will build you a house”; therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant; 29 now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue for ever before you; for you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed for ever.’

41 As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, ‘If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side. 44 They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.’45 Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; 46 and he said, ‘It is written, “My house shall be a house of prayer”; but you have made it a den of robbers.’ 47 Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him; 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were spellbound by what they heard. 20 One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and telling the good news, the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders 2 and said to him, ‘Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?’ 3 He answered them, ‘I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: 4 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?’ 5 They discussed it with one another, saying, ‘If we say, “From heaven”, he will say, “Why did you not believe him?” 6 But if we say, “Of human origin”, all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet.’ 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.’

Luke 19:41-20:8

The processions enter the Cathedral as we sing the opening hymn CP 627

1 Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, and publish abroad his wonderful name; the name all-victorious of Jesus extol: his kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

2 God ruleth on high, almighty to save;

and still he is nigh, his presence we have; the great congregation his triumph shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

3 Salvation to God who sits on the throne!

Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son. The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

4 Then let us adore, and give him his right:

all glory and power, all wisdom and might, and honour and blessing, with angels above, and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

The Proclamation of the Word The Old Testament Lesson

Judges 4:1-10 read by Marilynna Burton

1 The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, after Ehud died. 2 So the LORD sold them into the hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-ha-goiim. 3 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly for twenty years. 4 At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel. 5 She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgement. 6 She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, ‘The LORD, the God of Israel,

commands you, “Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. 7 I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin’s army, to meet you by the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand.”’ 8 Barak said to her, ‘If you will go with me, I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.’ 9 And she said, ‘I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.’ Then Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and ten thousand warriors went up behind him; and Deborah went up with him.

This is followed by The Epistle

Colossians 1:9-14 read by Audrie Gill

9 For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his

glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Holy Gospel Luke 8:40-48

read by Reverend David Moynan

After the announcement

All sing Praise and glory to God

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 Just then there came a man named Jairus, a leader of the synagogue. He fell at Jesus’ feet and begged him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. As he went, the crowds pressed in on him. 43 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years; and though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her haemorrhage stopped.

45 Then Jesus asked, ‘Who touched me?’ When all denied it, Peter said, ‘Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you.’ 46 But Jesus said, ‘Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me.’ 47 When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.

1 Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ’s abode.

2 The Lord, who left the heavens

our life and peace to bring, to dwell in lowliness with men, their pattern and their King;

3 Still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his dwelling and his throne chooseth the pure in heart.

4 Lord, we thy presence seek;

may ours this blessing be; give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for Thee.

Intercessions Canon Jocelyn Smith

Lord, in Your mercy Hear our prayer

We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostles Creed

All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead.

On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty.

Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son.

When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son

to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit.

Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Please kneel or be seated

Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

The Celebrant continues

Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen.

The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your ta-ble. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.

The Choir sings the Agnus Dei as those in the sanctuary receive communion.

The Invitation

The Celebrant invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles. In this post Covid19 period, we are offering the common cup only. Please do not dip the wafer in the common cup.

Prayer after Communion Celebrant Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding

us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love and care in assuring us of your gift of eternal life and uniting us with the blessed company of all faithful people.

All Therefore, everliving God, keep us steadfast in your holy fel-

lowship. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Blessing

1 Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory Thou o'er death hast won. 2 Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. 3 No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory Thou o'er death hast won.

PRAYERS

ENVIRONMENTAL PRAYER: Creator God and Source of Life, Sustain us in this time of global pandemic, and of climate change. Help us to stay connected to your presence with us. The pandemic has spread throughout our modern world of travel. We ask now for resolve to heed the message of the birds and animals. Strengthen our resolve to live in kinder ways for our mother earth. May we be alert and active custodians of your creation, showing compassion and love for all of life. Your creation is grieving, give us patience and hope. Hear our prayer for world Leaders that their decision making will take us forward with new insight. Companion God, You are with us in every circumstance, guide us in this time. Amen 15

ST BARNABAS PRAYER O Lord, who commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous, make us brave and bold to face a post-Covid future in which so much that is familiar and normal has changed, perhaps for ever. We praise You for Your mighty resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead, and we ask for You to empower us and our persecuted brothers and sisters to face whatever is to come. May we glorify You by our lives in the post-Covid world and reflect the character of Your Son Jesus Christ, in whose Name we pray. (Joshua 1:6) Amen.

Nelson Cathedral CHRISTIAN MEDITATION Meditation is not something new.

Rather it is central to the Christian experience and deeply rooted in Christian tradition.

Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of silence and listening.

This is the aim given by the Psalmist “Be still and know that I am God.”

All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical prayer- a time of silence, stillness and

reflection. Come and join our small, friendly community of Christian meditators.

It is suitable for everyone, and easy to learn.

Every Tuesday evening from 4.30 – 5.30 pm

WALKING GROUP (Tuesdays) - start at Cathedral 9 am, followed by morning tea in Cathedral. A good time to shift those extra Lockdown calories.

The Elliot family are urgently looking for a house in Nelson for Zane and Karen from approximately the 15th of August or before for at least 4-5 months. The use of a vehicle at this time would be a real blessing too. If you can help please call Paula on 03 377 2222 or [email protected]

CHURCHWARDEN’S NOTE

Thank you to those who have changed to or gone onto an automatic payment arrangement for giving to the Cathedral. We do appreciate that and of course without regular financial support it would not be possible to sustain the ministry we do at the Cathedral.

Some parishioners have expressed a view they would like to change but are not sure of the process. You can set up automatic payments yourself on your online banking. If you don’t do online banking, then your bank can help you. All you need do is take the Bulletin into the bank and show the teller this page with the bank details on it and explain how much you would like to give. When the offertory plate comes by, we have laminated cards that you can put into the bas-ket. They are in a box on the entrance table – the sides people will help you. Be assured all information remains confidential and you do get an annual receipt for tax purposes.
