I marvel at the way politicians in New Zealand are so accessible to everybody. May we never take this for granted. Is there any other nation in the world that has such easy accessibility to our political leaders? There are plenty of examples of Jesus being immersed in politics. Judaism, with the Sanhedrin, was a very political body as they worked in conjunction and sometimes in conflict with the Roman occupiers of Israel. We all need to immerse ourselves as Christians into politics. Last week we farewelled Audrey and John Gill as they head off back to England. We felt their absence at our Bishopdale service last Thursday as they were keen and regular attenders. Early in the week we had the privilege of having an exchange with the author of “Canoeing the Mountains” written by Tod Bolsinger. His is a brilliant book on “Christian leadership in uncharted territory.” It was amazing to have the chance to interact with him even though he is in America. The experience of the pandemic in New Zealand has caused us to look at other ways of communication; Zoom being but one. It opens a number of doors. It is always good to meet with fellow clergy and we did this at Victory Community Church last week. We are now halfway through our confirmation course. Last week Patsy spoke about the historical development of Protestantism and Anglicanism and a few days ago I spoke about prayer. I love the quote from Sidlow Baxter when he was referring to the prayer of Job. He wrote: “Prayer was the invisible hinge on which the golden gate of deliverance swung open for Job.” Also: “Prayer for others has a liberating reflex spiritually upon ourselves”. And again: “Prayer is the vital axis in any spiritual life”. I met with Joel Kumar from Operation Mobilisation (OM) earlier in the week and he spoke at our staff meeting. OM has a 63 year old track record of evangelisation throughout the world especially in the 10-40 window of unreached peo- ples, ( those regions of the eastern hemisphere, plus the European and African part of the western hemisphere, located between 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator, a general area that is purported to have the highest level of socioeconomic challenges and least access to the Christian message and Christian resources on the planet.)

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –6th September 2020

Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you / leave for re-use.

Dear Cathedralites, This morning we welcome the Hon. Nick Smith, the sitting MP for Nelson to speak here at the Cathedral. It is a couple of months since the Green candidate Dr. Aaron Stallard spoke on behalf of the Greens and two weeks ago Rachel Boyack spoke as she represents the Labour Party. We had a different CAMEO on Friday because we did not have any singing which is a vital part of our meetings. However, at level 2 with a vulnerable group of people we proceeded with caution. Well done to nurse Judith, Jocelyn and the CAMEO team as we addressed the increasing problem of isolation and loneliness. One of the exciting experiences I have each year is when I purchase a brand-new diary for the following year. This I did earlier in the week. It is grand to look forward to 2021. Although most people now have diaries on their IPhones, I prefer the old diary! I recommend you look at the weekly program of Christian World news featured on Shine TV. In this half hour news slot, we are made aware of the suffering of Christians throughout the world in various countries plus the great work Christians are doing. We rarely hear such news on our national TV channels. I make sure that once a week watching the Christian World news is part of my morning devotions. Aren’t the daffodils, the rhododendrons and camellias magnificent! Nelson and New Zealand are grand places in spring. I praise God, our Creator for the splendour and wonderment of His creation. Have a great week. In His service, Mike

Order of Service

Celebrant: Dean Mike Hawke Guest Speaker: The Hon. Dr Nick Smith Minister of the Liturgy: Lesley Bandy Organist Jane Mitchell

The processions enter the Cathedral as we sing the opening hymn CP 6 1 New every morning is the love

our wakening and uprising prove; through sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life and power and thought.

2 New mercies, each returning day,

hover around us while we pray; new perils past, new sins forgiven, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

3 If on our daily course our mind

be set to hallow all we find, new treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice.

4 The trivial round, the common task,

will furnish all we need to ask, room to deny ourselves, a road to bring us daily nearer God.

5 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love

fit us for perfect rest above; and help us, this and every day, to live more nearly as we pray.

Minister of the Liturgy Hear God’s word to all who turn to Christ: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. For-give us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Absolution is pronounced by the Dean

The Proclamation of the Word The Old Testament Lesson

Genesis 29:15-28 read by Marilynna Burton

15 Then Laban said to Jacob, ‘Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?’ 16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were lovely, and Rachel was graceful and beautiful. 18 Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, ‘I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.’ 19 Laban said, ‘It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.’ 20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.21 Then Jacob said to Laban, ‘Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my

time is completed.’ 22 So Laban gathered together all the people of the place, and made a feast. 23 But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 (Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.) 25 When morning came, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?’ 26 Laban said, ‘This is not done in our country—giving the younger before the firstborn. 27 Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me for another seven years.’ 28 Jacob did so, and completed her week; then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife.

Psalm 149

1. O Praise the Lord and sing to the Lord a new song: O praise him in the assembly of the faithful.

2. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children Zion by joyful in their king.

3. Let them praise him in the dance: let them sing his praise with timbrel and with harp.

4. For the Lord takes delight in his people: he adorns the meek with his salvation.

5. Let his faithful ones exult in his glory: let them sing for joy upon their beds.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for

all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We stand to sing the Gradual Hymn CP 474

1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,

nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small;

in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish; but naught changeth Thee.

4 Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,

Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendour of light hideth Thee.

Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader

The Holy Gospel Matthew 25:14-23

read by Reverend Ren Kempthorne After the announcement

All sing Praise and glory to God 14 ‘For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; 15 to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. 17 In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more tal-ents. 18 But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20 Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing

five more talents, saying, “Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.” 21 His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” 22 And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, “Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.” 23 His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.”

We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Peace

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you.

Celebrant E te whanau, we are the body of Christ. All By one Spirit we were baptised into one body.

Celebrant Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. All Amen. We are bound by the love of Christ. Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 308 1 Just as I am, without one plea

but that Thy blood was shed for me, and that Thou bidst me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come.

2 Just as I am, though tossed about

with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come.

3 Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;

sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come.

Page 10: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –6th ...€¦ · Celebrant Grace and peace to you from God. All God fill you with truth and joy. Celebrant The Lord be with you

4 Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come.

5 Just as I am, thy love unknown

has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come.

6 Just as I am, of that free love

the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come.

Charlotte Elliott – 1789-1871

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty.

All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you.

Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, Almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son.

You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us.

When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit.

Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

The Choir sings Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory Hosanna in the highest Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or be seated

Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father. On the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

The Celebrant continues

Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen.

The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei as those in the Sanctuary receive communion.

Ezekiel 12:21-28

21 The word of the LORD came to me: 22 Mortal, what is this proverb of yours about the land of Israel, which says, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision comes to nothing’? 23 Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: I will put an end to this proverb, and they shall use it no more as a proverb in Israel.’ But say to them, The days are near, and the fulfilment of every vision. 24 For there shall no longer be any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25 But I the LORD will speak the word that I speak, and it will be fulfilled. It will no longer be delayed; but in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and fulfil it, says the Lord GOD.26 The word of the LORD came to me: 27 Mortal, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many years ahead; he prophesies for distant times.’ 28 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: None of my words will be delayed any longer, but the word that I speak will be fulfilled, says the Lord GOD.

Acts 19:11-20

11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that when the handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, their diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them. 13 Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, ‘I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.’ 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit said to them in reply, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?’ 16 Then the man with the evil spirit leapt on them, mastered them all, and so overpowered them that they fled out of the house naked and wounded. 17 When this became known to all residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, everyone was awestruck; and the name of the Lord Jesus was praised. 18 Also many of those who became believers confessed and disclosed their practices. 19 A number of those who practised magic collected their books and burned them publicly; when the value of these books was calculated, it was found to come to fifty thousand silver coins. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.

1. My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and make melody. 2. Awake, my soul, awake lute and harp: for I will awaken the morning. 3. I will give you thanks, O LORD, among the peoples, I will sing your praise among the nations. 4. For the greatness of your mercy reaches to the heavens: And your faithfulness to the clouds. 5. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens: and let your glory be over all the earth. 6. That those whom you love may be delivered: O save us by your right hand and answer me.

PRAYER FOR OUR EARTH ENVIRONMENT: Creator Spirit, thank you; our land of Aotearoa is full of wonder. In Creation’s diversity all are valued in the power of your love. We sense your spirit in Nature, and our own spirit is nourished. When we sing of each flower that opens, each bird that sings, we pray for the will to take better care of Earth. Storms and drought are with us, our Boulder Bank is changing, our world is warming. Stir our minds to simplify our lives, re-use, reduce the dreaded plastic, for the sake of health, sea and landfill. Be with those who work in conservation, wildlife rescue, and who farm the land in new ways. In society’s need for progress, help us to make decisions that respect our environment. Source of Wisdom, You are concerned with us for the wellbeing of planet Earth. We turn to your presence. Guide us with your peace. Amen.

ST BARNABAS PRAYER

SUNDAY 6th September: O God, our refuge and our strength, our very present help in time of trouble, have mercy on our brothers and sisters around the world who live with the reality of anti-Christian violence. We pray for the countless thousands who have been injured or bereaved, who have had to flee their homes and livelihoods. Comfort them with the reality of Your presence, protect them like a mighty fortress, and make the escalating violence cease. May the Name of Your Son Jesus Christ be glori-fied as Christian victims of violence forgive and love their persecutors, just as He did. Amen. (Psalm 46)

Nelson Cathedral CHRISTIAN MEDITATION

Meditation is not something new. Rather it is central to the Christian experience and deeply rooted in Christian tradition. Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of silence and listening.

This is the aim given by the Psalmist “Be still and know that I am God.”

All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical prayer- a time of silence, stillness and reflection.

Come and join our small, friendly community of Christian meditators. It is suitable for everyone, and easy to learn.
