Dear Friends,

“The Blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church”

Those words were uttered by Tertullian, a North African Christian of the second century AD. What he meant by this is that the Church was very often strengthened by persecution; and those early Christians certainly were persecuted for their faith.

Tickenham church is dedicated to two such saints, Quiricus and Julietta, a mother and child, who were martyred for their faith not that long after Tertullian's time. This month, Tickenham church celebrates their memory over the weekend of the 16th and 17th.

Christ Church and Tickenham share one another's patronal festivals, so both our parishes are invited to join in the celebration. The church fair is on the Saturday afternoon at Tickenham Court and the joint service of Holy Communion is on the Sunday at 10.30am in Tickenham Church.

The manner of this mother and child martyrdom isn't the most important fact. What is important is that they were prepared to lay down their lives for Christ, and they did not compromise with the politics and culture of their time, both of which were vehemently hostile towards Christianity. At that time, the Roman Emperor was to be worshipped, and anything went, morally. All of this put Christians in a very perilous situation: compromise your faith and adapt to the culture or die!

Is there anything we can learn from these two martyrs? Can they speak to us living in the 21st century?

The lesson for us is best summed up in one word: sacrifice, and also in the old story of the Pig and the Chicken. If you don't know the story, it goes something like this:

A chicken and a pig lived on a farm. The farmer was very good to them and they both wanted to do something good for him.

One day the chicken approached the pig and said, "I have a great idea for something we can do for the farmer! Would you like to help?"

The pig, quite intrigued by this, said, "Of course! What do you propose?"

...cont

The chicken knew how much the farmer enjoyed a good healthy breakfast. He also knew how little time the farmer had to make a good breakfast. "I think the farmer would be very happy if we made him breakfast."

The pig thought about this. While not as close to the farmer, he too knew of the farmer's love for a good breakfast. "I'd be happy to help you make breakfast for the farmer! What do you suggest we make?"

The chicken, understanding that he had little else to offer suggested, "I could provide some eggs."

The pig knew the farmer might want more. "That's a fine start. What else should we make?"

The chicken looked around...scratched his head...then said, "Ham? The farmer loves ham and eggs!"

The pig, very mindful of what this implied, said, "That's fine, but while you're making a contribution, I'm making a total commitment!"

God doesn't want just a contribution from us; he wants our commitment.

Every blessing,

Tony

Note from the editor

VOLUNTEERS PLEASE! We have applied to the PCC to ask if we might, for a trial period, change the format of the monthly Christchurch Chronicle to an A4 size. This would not only make it easier for me to put together the Chronicle but also there would be more space to include extra articles. I would like to include a regular recipe page, a gardening page, a wildlife page, a puzzles page—really anything that we would all find interesting and that would help us reach a wider readership in the community. With this in mind, would anyone be willing to write any of the above regular articles? Or, if not these, then possibly something similar? If you can help, please contact me at [email protected], or talk to me in church or leave a message in my pigeonhole at church. Many thanks, Kirsten

CHRIST CHURCH CHRONICLE JUNE 2018

6th June—Juliet Cregan speaking about our Link Diocese 7.30pm 7th June—Special Event Evening – Flanders & Swann 7.30pm 20th June—Cream Tea at Chew Valley Lake Coach leaving CC 2.30pm 28th June—Deanery Service at Christ Church 7.30pm (Banners to be paraded) We have a lot taking place in June, not only our branch but our neighbouring branches as well. There are Cream Teas galore and the World Wide Lunch at Cleeve on 18th July. If you intend to go to the Cleeve lunch please be aware of the change of venue. It was previously held in the Sinclair Pavilion in Meeting House Lane; this year it is being held in the Village Hall. I won’t be able to provide lifts as I am away visiting my family in Prague. Cleeve always surpass themselves with a wonderful meal and really good company. The board has been out in the Church porch for a few weeks now for those who want to attend The Cream Tea at Chew Valley Lake on Wednesday 20th June. This is always enjoyable so let’s hope we get really lovely weather, as we did last year; in fact it was too hot! On Thursday 7th June at 7.30pm we have our Special Event evening when Tim Lewis, accompanied by Sheila Furneaux, who will be giving a rendition of Flanders & Swann. There will be light refreshments to follow and I am sure it will be a fun-filled evening, and only £7 a ticket. Tickets are available from Jacqui or your Committee Members. This brings me to wonder whether you are all aware who the MU Committee Members are at Christ Church: Jacqui Broughton Branch Leader John Bickerstaffe Treasurer Val Clifton Secretary Kate Gottschling Jane Baggley Joy Webster Yvonne Rawlinson Chris Mahony

They will be delighted to answer your questions and, of course, sell you tickets. On 28th June we have Portishead Deanery Festival Service. This year it is to be held at our Church. Banners are to be paraded and if anyone would like to read a bible lesson or say prayers, please let me know. Sadly, we have lost another MU member. Mavis Standard has died. We will miss her very much at our meetings and, indeed, in Pat and Maurice’s Home Group of which she and I were both members. Please keep Mavis’ family and friends in your prayers. I found this little prayer which I will share with you: My life is but a weaving between God and me. I do not choose the colours, He worketh steadily. Oft-times He weaveth sorrow, and I in foolish pride, forget he sees the upper, and I the underside. Not till the loom is silent, and shuttles cease to fly, will God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why. The dark threads are as needful in the skilful weaver’s hand, as the threads of gold and silver in the pattern he has planned. I hope you are all enjoying the Summer. God Bless, Jacqui

Filling the gaps

We all know the old adage, one volunteer is worth 10 pressed (wo)men. As we celebrate Volunteer Week 2018 (1-7 June) I want to give thanks for and to the thousands of volunteers across Somerset who love and serve our communities.

Former US first lady Rosalynn Carter once said that a nation without volunteers is a nation without a soul. As we experience continued cuts to our local services, it is volunteers who are ‘filling the gaps’. Offering anything from volunteer drivers ensuring isolated older people can get to the shops, to church groups providing space for young families to meet, to share stories and support each other.

Yet they are not only a lifeline for the more vulnerable groups; all our lives are so much richer thanks to our volunteers.

Our churches, and the ministry of each, rely heavily on the generosity of our volunteers. Whether working with children and young people, helping serve tea and coffee after a service, delivering a reading or leading prayers, or being part of the flower or cleaning rota. Your vicar may be a volunteer too – as more people are called to serve as self-supporting ministers. Volunteering is at the heart of Christian service and discipleship. It’s about the stewardship of our time and talents.

Page 9: Christ Church Chronicle€¦ · 6 CHRIST CHURCH CHRONICLE JUNE 2018 6th June—Juliet Cregan speaking about our Link Diocese 7.30pm 7th June—Special Event Evening – Flanders &

9

However, we are hearing that nationally, volunteering is in decline, and so it may take a rethink in our approach to release those talents, those gifts. There are many hugely talented people within our churches and our communities but sometimes they may feel reticent about putting themselves forward. People might be too humble, or not confident in their own abilities, feel they are not the right fit or not ‘churchy’ enough to put their hand up. How much more powerful for all of us if someone we know says to us “You’d be great for that, you have a real gift for it.” What an encouragement! By having those conversations we recognise and release those God-given gifts.

And let’s be creative. The accountant worshipping in your congregation every Sunday who you have earmarked for the Treasurer role next time around might actually have a passion for creative prayer. Not everyone wants to do their day job in their spare time!

Imagine how our churches might be transformed if we create the roles around the people we have and their gifts, rather than the other way around!

So thank you for your gift of time and talent and be sure to encourage those around you in theirs!

The Right Reverend Ruth Worsley

Bishop of Taunton

Children's News

There is a lot happening in the next few months before the school summer holidays. Children's Church is on the 3rd June. Then there is 'My Family' which starts slightly later at 10.15 It's great having the Church full of families and regular congregation. Please continue to pray for the planning team for fresh ideas, contacts with new families and for building a lasting relationship with them. Faith For Children (FFC) have their own activities in the hall during the 10am services on the 10th and 24th June. FFC is for 3-11yr olds and visiting children are welcome to join in. There is NO FFC on the 17th as everyone is at Tickenham Church for their Patronal Festival starting at the later time of 10.30am. FFC families, please put in your diaries the end of year party on Saturday 28th July 4-5.30pm in the Hall. Invites will be going out soon to the children. Some of the children, Maddy, Ashton and Emily are helping to raise money for the Church Fair on Saturday 21st July by being sponsored to go and get wet in the stocks!! Jill Stanton and myself have bravely volunteered to do the same, and Tony and Phil didn't have a choice! So please help us raise as much money as possible to cover all the children's activities at the fair, as they are part of our outreach and free for families to enjoy on the day. If anyone else would like to 'humble' themselves in the stocks there is still plenty of time. Forms from me. A huge thank you to Mike Goodwin from Tickenham, who has donated his puppet collection to be used at Church. Another fun activity for FFC which we hope, with practice, to show at Children's Church. A reminder that there is a Children's Ministry Team meeting on Monday 4th June at 11.15 in the Hall. This is for leaders of the different children's groups at Christ Church, to meet and plan together.

It is a really interesting and informative time for anyone who would like to hear more and to celebrate what God has been doing in our local Secondary School. 7pm for refreshments with a 7.30pm start. If you would like more details of the Connect work please ask me, or take Neil's latest newsletter in the porch. Chip Shop Church

Local children for an action-packed week at CTINAD’s holiday club

Nailsea and Distict’s children and young people are set for a week of fun and games at the Christians’ Together holiday club! Based on Scripture Union’s Rocky’s Plaice holiday club material, the week will be full of creative teaching, games, craft, songs, prayers and Bible reading as children learn about God’s great plan for salvation. The holiday club runs from 10am–3pm from 7-9th August and is open to all children in primary school who have completed their first year (Registration class). Leaders of the holiday club Sandy Beech (Sharon) and Pebble Beech (Kirsty) are excited about the event. ‘I’m really looking forward to this year’s holiday club. It will be great fun, we’ll learn a lot and it would be fantastic if lots of children come along.’ If you’d like to get involved please let Kirsty or Sharon know and on which dates you’d be free! Thank you!

Wearing my Harness 3

The end is in sight, but it is also a beginning…

The final meeting of my Readership Training group is at the end of June. By then, I will have handed in all my coursework and evaluations from leading and preaching assignments and will be waiting for the decision of the Bishop as to whether he will license me to the position of Reader in our Benefice. It is never a certainty until that decision is made; though I would hope that something would have been said before now if they felt I was unsuitable. This marks the end of the first three years of training.

At 2:00pm on Saturday 6th October 2018 in Wells Cathedral, I will be presented to the Bishop by a member of our congregation and the Bishop will licence me to be your Reader. I will be given a bible and a blue Readers’ scarf as a symbol of my office. My imaginary harness will be removed and I will be a Reader.

In September this year, I will start year four of the five years training. This will cover some subjects in more depth as well as introducing new ones and we will be integrated with the new intake as well as the final year Readers for the first time.

I will keep you posted.

Please ask me if you would like some more information or have a look here: https://www.bathandwells.org.uk/ministry-for-mission/training/reader-training/

Every blessing,

Richard

Parish Prayers

This month we shall be praying for members of the Christ Church family who live outside the parish.

Is this YOU?

If so, do pick up a card with more information from the back of church.

So in June please pray for members of the Christ Church

family who live outside the parish.

After Eights

Summer is upon us and our meeting on June 18th will be an evening walk led by John Bickerstaffe. We shall start from Kath Bezzant’s house, 8 Kingsmead, at 7.30pm, and return there for a pasty supper afterwards, for which there will be a charge of £5.00.

If you are not a great walker you can spend the time in the garden, chatting and minding the pasties.

We shall be delighted if husbands, friends, and any who enjoy a walk, will join us. Please let us know if you would like to come so we can buy enough pasties.

Pat Eveleigh (852559, [email protected])

Note that the date is wrong on our printed programme.

It really is our usual Monday, June 18th.

.Congratulations to Kingshill Church School

Following an Ofsted inspection in April the school has received the news that it ‘continues to be good’. This is no mean feat under the current rigorous regime. Our headteacher, Mrs. Jan Thomson, writes in the school newsletter: We are very pleased with the report as it reflects our fantastic school in so many ways. I am so proud of everyone and proud to be part of such a wonderful team. One of my favourite quotes in the report is as follows: “Adults develop very positive relationships with pupils. They set consistently high expectations and supervise pupils well at all times. As a result, pupils come into school calmly and sensibly, eager to start the day. During lessons, pupils listen respectfully to adults and settle down to work with the minimum of fuss. At break time, they play happily and sociably with their friends. “ The report praises Mrs. Thomson’s leadership stating: “You have high aspirations for your pupils and staff and believe that everyone has the chance to succeed. You are a positive role model and your relentless and successful pursuit of improvement embodies the school’s ethos of ‘learning without limits’.” The inspector also records that: “Pupils enjoy school and are extremely welcoming and polite” and that parents and carers spoke to her about “… the kind and caring ethos of the school and the approachability of all adults. Typical comments include, ’There is an amazing atmosphere here’ and Teachers are great’.” Well done Kingshill. We at Christ Church are very proud of you too.

Liz Everitt. Governor

A Tribute to Doreen McCarthy

Doreen was born October 1925 in London. At the outbreak of war she was evacuated to Northampton but as no bombs fell on London she returned home only for the Blitz to start! Before the end of the war she was in uniform as a WAAF.

She met Jack when she wanted to help with Cubs; he was the man she was sent to meet; they spent the rest of his life together. They started married life in London, then moved to Patchway and finally Nailsea in 1961.

While in Patchway Doreen joined the MU in 1952 and transferred her membership to Christ Church in 1961 where she became Enrolling Member (now Branch Leader) in January 1990.Doreen continued to be a faithful member of MU, becoming an Indoor Member while in Silver Trees.

Doreen joined Christ Church Choir soon after her arrival in Nailsea and sang for many years, until her sight deteriorated. She was also a member of Nailsea Choral Society and Nailsea WI.

Doreen and Jack loved to travel with their trusty caravan, going around the Continent and the British Isles but after one rainy week in the caravan it had to go.

Both Doreen and Jack were very involved in the life of Christ Church from their arrival. Jack was Church Warden in the Seventies, and we thank them for all they gave.

Doreen was a very clever crafts woman; she worked many beautiful cross stitch pictures and continued knitting until a few months before her death in March.

CMS Church Mission Society

Christ Church has a strong historical link with CMS and over the years has supported many Mission Partners for many years.

CMS began over 200 years ago in 1799 with a group of Christians whose hearts were stirred to put their faith into action. They lived mainly around Holy Trinity Church, Clapham, South West London, a fairly wealthy area and became known as the Clapham Sect. Apart from the clergy, members included William Wilberforce, an MP and involved with the abolition of slavery; John Newton, a slave trader until a terrible storm at sea led to his faith in God becoming a reality, remembered for writing 'Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me'; Hannah More a friend of Wilberforce's, known in this area for her founding of schools but also had a poem published called 'Slavery', and other influential members in the area. Together they worked to abolish the slave trade; they fought for the rights of the oppressed people at home and they launched out on dangerous seas to share Jesus with the world.

The effects of their efforts -as well as the work of thousands of men and women who have followed in their footsteps - are still seen and felt across the globe today.

CMS is a community of people who have been set free to follow God's call in mission. Many, many people from all walks of life are praying together, working, learning and acting together in pursuit of that call, both in this country and overseas.

Being a Link Church is a vital part of a chain of people working together to see the love of Jesus transform lives and communities worldwide. The link enables members to stand alongside a mission partner, provide much needed prayer, financial support and friendship and helping to put their call into action. It is not a one-way relationship, it's a two-way, a mutual exchange of love and care; it IS mission.

For details of our present partners, please look at the CMS notice board in the Vestry Hall or chat with a member of the World Wide Church Committee. Further information can be found on line 'churchmissionsociety.org'. If you would like to receive a copy of CMS 'Prayerlines' or look at the quarterly paper 'The Call' have a word with me.
