WELCOME: Welcome in our Savior’s name – and thanks for sharing with us today in Christ’s love

and peace! We pray that our worship together increases your faith and joy in Christian

living. If you are a visitor, please sign the pew cards and place them in the offering

plate. If you are not an active member of another Christian church, we encourage you to

visit us often and inquire into teachings and practices of our church. We’re glad you are

here, and hope you’ll join us again soon!

AS WE GATHER

In his sermon on Pentecost, Peter speaks of what he has experienced first-hand; the

forgiveness of Christ. After what Peter had done in denying Jesus, he was forgiven and

restored as the leader and spokesman for the Apostles. The forgiveness Peter received is

offered to all by faith. This is the faith that the confirmands will confess with the whole

Church today. We come, not because we are worthy but because we have been made

worthy by the forgiving love of Christ.

EASTER ACCLAMATION

Pastor: Christ is risen!

People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

HYMN OF THE DAY “Who Am I?” [DVD by Casting Crowns]

SERMON “Made Bold by the Promise” Text: Acts 2:38-39

Today we witness two miracles, one in our N.T. lesson and in the

testimonies of the confirmands.

After such a catastrophic failure, how could Peter presume to

speak again for Jesus?

After the many times we have failed to speak up for Jesus and

denied Him by our silence, betrayed Him by our sin, how can we

come here and sing His praises?

The miracle is that the Master Musician has taken empty people

and touched us with the water of baptism that we might become

that important part of His plan that He has chosen us to play.

Confirmation is simply a remembrance of your baptism.

God has led you to this point but He wants to continue to lead.

Indeed, you can’t take one step without Him.

The miracle that God should choose to save sinners and then use us to pass on that

miracle to others is daily evidence of His Grace.

Making the Best of It

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD

for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." Jeremiah 29:7

When God’s people were slaves in Babylon, He told them: ‘This is the Message ... to all the exiles I’ve

taken from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and make yourselves at home. Put in gardens and eat

what grows in that country. Marry and have children. Encourage your children to marry and have children

so that you’ll thrive in that country and not waste away. Make yourselves at home there and work for the

country’s welfare. Pray for Babylon’s well-being. If things go well for Babylon, things will go well for you

... As soon as Babylon’s seventy years are up and not a day before, I’ll show up and take care of you as I

promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out - plans to take care of

you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for”’ (vv. 4-11). There’s an important lesson

here. While we’re waiting for God to turn things around for us, we need to be as productive as possible.

While we’re waiting for God to work, a lot of us think we should do nothing, even though there’s plenty

around for us to do. The bottom line is: We’ve become concerned about one person only - ourselves. When

we mess up, the only person we tend to see is - ourselves. But God says, ‘While you’re waiting on me to do

something good for you, start doing something good for others’. By blessing others, you open up the

channel for God to come through and bless you. That’s the way it works, that’s the way HE works!

Prayer Heavenly Father, You always have a plan. Help me be patient as You reveal it at Your right time. In Jesus’

Name, Amen

The Reason for the Attack

I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.

Psalms 41:11

The Devil doesn’t want you to know that God’s favor is on your life, or that you’ve been blessed by Him

with all the good things you enjoy. The truth is, the Devil doesn’t want you to think God has done anything

good for you at all! He will try to convince you that you have no purpose, power, or potential. He’ll try to

persuade you that your background means you won’t amount to anything, and if that doesn’t work he’ll

play the childhood memories card. If that doesn’t work, he will remind you of all the disappointments

you’ve been through in life. And if you buy what he’s selling you’ll end up with such self-doubt and low

self-esteem you won’t believe God has blessed you in any way, or that He has a wonderful plan for your

life. But He has! No matter how limited your ability or uninspiring your accomplishments, every blessing

you’re enjoying today happened because the Lord is on your side. The psalmist said, I know that you are

pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me. In my integrity you uphold me and set me in your

presence forever.(vv. 11-12). David understood that his enemies were attacking him because they witnessed

the favor of God on his life. The question is, do you understand that God’s favor is on your life too? If you

don’t, you won’t expect the attack, understand the reason behind it or how to overcome it. You’re blessed

and favored - that’s why you’re a target! Are others resentful because of what God has done for you? How

come they see it and you can’t?

Prayer Heavenly Father, help me see the real enemy when I am attacked and not allow it to get me down because I

know You have defeated the devil. Thank You in Jesus’ Name, Amen

Before You Date Someone

in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6

Before you date somebody, ask yourself: 1) Am I free to be who I am? Paul writes, ‘Let’s just go ahead

and be what we were made to be’ (Romans 12:6). If you have to reinvent yourself to keep somebody

happy, you’re in the wrong relationship. If they disapprove of you now, do you seriously think marriage

will improve things? Not a chance! 2) Is the relationship based on honesty? The Bible talks about ‘telling

each other the truth’ (Ephesians 4:25). Relationships thrive on openness and trust. When deceit creeps in,

it’s time to get truthful in a hurry or call it quits. 3) Have we established clear boundaries? If the

relationship ended today, would you regret your level of involvement? The Bible says, ‘Run from sexual

sin’ (1 Corinthians 6:18). God made sex a commitment specifically for marriage; otherwise what was

intended to be beautiful and fulfilling can leave you feeling ‘used’. 4) Is this person possessive or

controlling? If so, it’s a red flag. The Bible says, ‘Love is ... never jealous’ (1 Corinthians 13:4). If you

can’t make a move without the other person’s permission, you need to back off and re-evaluate the

relationship. 5) How are we spending our time together? Without a plan, it’s easy to get more physically

involved than you should. That’s why it’s good to agree up front about establishing boundaries. Keep God

in your relationship and you won’t go wrong. ‘Listen for God’s voice in everything you do ... he’s the one

who will keep you on track.’

Prayer Heavenly Father, right relationships are important. Help me develop Godly relationships. In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

You Can’t See What You Are Not Looking For

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalms 119:18

One day Elisha and his servant awoke to find the house they were in surrounded by an army of enemy

soldiers. His servant panicked and asked, ‘What are we going to do?’ So Elisha prayed, ‘LORD, open his

eyes so that he may see’ (2 Kings 6:17). Suddenly he saw their enemies surrounded by an even bigger army

of angels. On their way home to Emmaus, Cleopas and his companion were heartbroken because Jesus, the

One in whom they’d placed their hopes, had been crucified and buried. Out of nowhere a stranger joined

them on their journey, and when they reached home they invited him to stay for supper. As he prayed and

pronounced a blessing over their meal, the eyes of Cleopas and his companion were opened and they

recognized that the stranger was none other than Jesus Himself (see Luke 24:13-35). A man on a commuter

train kept gazing out the window and saying, ‘Wonderful; just wonderful!’. What was he looking at? Run-

down apartment buildings and rubbish spilling over onto the pavement! After hearing him say ‘Wonderful’

four or five times the lady beside him remarked, ‘It doesn’t look too wonderful to me’. Whereupon the man

replied, ‘I’ve been blind for the past thirty years. But through the skill of a surgeon, the generosity of a

donor, and a corneal transplant, I’ve been given the gift of two new eyes. And to me, everything I see is

wonderful.’ Grumbling blinds you to God’s blessings, but gratitude opens your eyes to enjoy them. So

today, ask the Lord to open your eyes to all the ‘wonderful things’ that surround you.

Prayer Heavenly Father, help me to see things – the things You see. Give me Your eyes. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Never Engage In Slander

He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. Proverbs 10:18

It’s rare to find a political candidate these days who runs a totally clean campaign. But slandering isn’t

limited to politicians. Given the right set of circumstances, each one of us can be tempted to denigrate the

Page 14: Christ Lutheran Church and School - THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER … · 2017. 9. 13. · Preschool – Growing in Christ by Concordia Publishing House This curriculum will take students

14

other. Before you do, however, read these words carefully:‘LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who

may live on your holy hill? He ... who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue,

who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellow-man’ (Psalm 15:1-3). Can you recall the

last time you spoke words that tore someone down? What was your motive? Why did you feel a need to

diminish them in the eyes of other people? Were you speaking out of the pain of having been hurt by them?

Did you envy their accomplishments? If so, have you not learned to let envy motivate you to achieve your

own goals instead of making you defame another? Is it possible you grudgingly admire and desire

something the other person has? The Bible says, ‘Promotion ... come[s] from God’ (Psalm 75:6-7). This

Scripture should cause you to become a team player, not a competitor. There’s no reason to snuff

somebody else’s light out so that yours can shine. God has already declared that no one can thwart His

purpose for your life: ‘The Lord [Almighty] has spoken - who can change his plans? When his hand moves,

who can stop him?’ (Isaiah 14:27). And since God has already secured your destiny and promised to

avenge all wrongs perpetrated against you, you never need to engage in slander.

Prayer Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have slandered someone. Help me be one that builds others up

– and if not – then one who shuts up. In Jesus’ Name, Amen Runaway Train (Of Thought)

“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.” Psalm 56:3

Children become frightened easily because their immature, developing minds are unable to sort through the things that

they do not understand. From an early age children learn to look to the ones who care for them. When children are

frightened they will reach out to take the hand of the one closest to them. There is a calm security in knowing that their

little hand is held steady by one who is near; the one who loves and protects them.

The story is told of a young child who was sitting on a train with her father. As the train entered a darkened tunnel

observers were certain this child would be fear ridden. As the train emerged from the darkness and into the daylight, a

woman sitting next to the child patted the little girls hand and said “There, there honey, you’re okay.” The little girl

looked at the woman and said, “I know.” Then holding up her father’s hand the child replied, “I’m holding my father’s

hand!”

Our Heavenly Father is the One holding our hand in the dark, chasing away runaway thoughts that threatens to derail

us. It’s easy to become so focused on the dark that we forget who is holding our hand in the tunnel. Never let what you

think you see in the dark overshadow what you know to be true in the Light. Anxiety and fear cast shadows of darkness

on the walls of our mind. Our loving Father took special care to continually remind us that by the power of His Word

and the promise of His presence, we need not be afraid. Christ never intended for us to live under the weight of fear but

rather to rise above it by clinging to His hand. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and

of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7). When fear tries to derail you, keep your hand in the hand of Your Father. There is

no better place to be. (Psalm 27:1)

Prayer Father, thank You for victory over worry and fear. Please squeeze my hand to remind me that You never let

go. Thank you Jesus; You are the Light in darkened places. In Your Name I rest, Amen.
