LWR/CLC Baby Care Kits Project 2017 Goal-500-Achieved 6/6/2017 Kits Completed-720 Project Leader-Sandy Keammerer ATTENTION: Kit Guidelines have changed! Lutheran World Relief wants to emphasize Size 6 to Size 24 months. Using those sizes clothing can be used for a longer period of time. When shopping for our needed items, look for bigger sizes. Each kit is to have a variety of sizes included. We rarely have donations of clothing in the 18-24 month range. Attention Mothers and Grandmothers: Do you have a baby in your family? Have you considered donating clothing that the baby has outgrown? Spread the word to other family members and friends. Lutheran World Relief's Baby Care Kits Project can use new and gently used items from 6 months to 24 months. Place all donations in the White Basket in the GATHERING AREA under the back shelf. Please indicate if clothing has been laundered. Be sure to pick up an items card from the white basket to carry with you so you know the project's exact needs. THANK YOU, THRIVENT MEMBERS, WHO HAVE RECEIVED ACTION TEAM FUNDING! This financial help has meant we can do more for those in need here and around the world. A memorial gift was received from the Wick family in memory of their mother, Marcella. Thank you for thinking of the Baby Care Kits Project. Soap, towels, diaper pins, and flannel must be purchased. If donations do not cover clothing needed, that clothing must be bought also. We can not add or subtract to any kit. There are 16 items we must have in each kit before it can be packed. LWR notified Christ Lutheran at the end of August that Baby Care Kits departed their warehouse for Burkina Faso, Africa. The Lutheran World Relief truck will be at Christ Lutheran Church the last Saturday of October thus ending the calendar year for 2017. Updated numbers for 2017 will be published in the November publications. October Need will be jackets, sweaters, sweat shirts with or without hoods and sleepers with or without feet. LWR/CLC Fabric Kit Project 2017 Goal-150 Achieved 7/24/201 Kits Completed-152 Project Leader-Sandy Keammerer On the last Saturday of October Christ Lutheran Church will again be hosting the collection of the Lutheran World Relief projects from various Lutheran church in our coverage area. From Valparaiso the truck will take the kits to the warehouse where projects are checked in, examined for their content, re-wrapped, and shipped to the part of the world where the need is greatest. Once the shipment arrives at its destination it is then given to a LWR partner there to be dispersed. Fabric Kits were sent to Burkina Faso to provide an important resource for women and men learning a trade and a way to earn an income. LWR's partner in Burkina Faso is the Catholic Organization for Development and Solidarity. It helps empower individuals who are in poverty. October Need is 3 yards of cotton or cotton blend fabric. It must be fabric that has never been used.

Our Fall Faith Formation got off to an amazing start with our two Rally Day events! The Lord has blessed us with fantastic people to lead the children and the adults in growing their faith. As we enter a time of celebration of the 500th anniversary of our Reformation, let's take the time to reflect and learn more about our Lutheran heritage with our current and upcoming offerings during the Faith Formation Hour.

CLC Social Ministry and Mission October 2017

As you do it for the least of these, you do it for Christ. (Matthew 25:40)

The focus for the month of October is to provide volunteer time and monetary support for Church World Service’s CROP Hunger Walk program www.churchworldservice.org and Lutheran World Relief www.lwr.org . A “Greater Porter County” CROP Hunger Walk www.crophungerwalk.org/valparaisoin will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 5, beginning at the Valparaiso University Chapel (gather at 12:30pm, Walk begins 1:30pm). There will be further publicity and details about the fall 2017 Walk throughout October. This annual event provides an opportunity for sponsors from area congregations and the University to walk a 5K (3 mile) course throughout the Valpo Univ. campus to raise awareness and funds for hunger, homelessness, and poverty related needs. CLC, area congregations, and the Valpo Univ. student group SALT, coordinate the Valpo city and Porter county (wide) CROP Hunger Walk each year.

Funds pledged can be designated, if desired, specifically to Lutheran World Relief, and a percentage of funds go to local food pantries as well. In past years about 20 CLC walkers (families including children), their supporters, and the congregation, have raised/contributed about $3000 each year. Sign up on the posted sheets in the church hall in October, or for more information contact Paula Katsahnias [email protected]. Either support a CLC walker through a check to “CWS/CROP” given to the walker, or use your weekly worship giving envelope and indicate “CWS” or “CROP” or “LWR” on the line marked Social Ministry with the amount you wish to give in addition to your regular giving.

Also, look for LWR volunteer opportunities in October: soap contributions (Soapy Sunday, Oct. 22nd), quilt making, and annual truckload collection day (Sat., Oct. 28th). Thank you to members for supporting monthly social concern emphases.

Volunteer Opportunities. Look for upcoming volunteer opportunities in which to be involved this Summer: Aluminum Can Recycling Project; Thrivent Activities; New Creation Men’s Shelter Saturday overnight activities; food donations to NWI Food Bank and other local food pantries; Youth, Sunday School, and LL Preschool service projects; CLC Womens’ and Mens’ Groups service activities; Lutheran World Relief quilt-making; and CLC Seniors’ Group soap collection. See information about above activities in the Social Ministry Bulletin Board in the Gathering Area.

A Message from Pastor Tim

Fearless Generosity

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

One striking thing about the Bible is how often people are told, “Do not be afraid.” Just about every time an angel, or a voice, or a burning bush, or a risen Jesus appear, we read: “Do not be afraid.” Which seems crazy – those seem perfectly reasonable times to be afraid! We learn that we have to be reminded again and again to not be afraid.

We also learn that God’s presence makes us fearless. Not our strength, not our willpower, but God with us – that is what tells us, “Do not be afraid.” This is quite a bit contrary to popular culture, since most of advertising, most of politics, most of investing, selling, buying, exercising, healthcare, career planning, house-purchasing, parenting… Just about everything in our culture is based on fear: fear I will miss out. Fear there won’t be enough. Fear I’m not enough. Fear of… the topics are as broad as culture can make them, since fear both sells and controls.

Yet as people of God, we know a different truth: the Lord our God is with us, wherever we go. And so we are fearless! We are free to serve, because God is with us. We are free to give, because God is with us. We are free to live and die and laugh and love, because God is with us. We are free to be faithful with everything, because God is with us. And because God is with us (which in Hebrew is “Emmanuel,” God-with-us), we are set free to be faithful, to be generous, to be disciples of Jesus, God-with-us.

In Jesus, we have more than enough – we have God-with-us. And so we are fearless, for God has said to us: “Do not be afraid.” We are fearless!

This changes the way we live, the way we make our decisions, the way we order our days, the way we look and think about legacy. If we are fearless – because God is with us – we are able to move ourselves out of the center of our own lives. We are able to look to others and care about and serve them, because we know God is handling caring for us. We are able to hold our “things” lightly, because we know what really gives our lives meaning and purpose, and it’s no “thing” – the one thing that matters is God-with-us, Jesus, and his life-altering, life-sacrificing, life-giving love.

In other words, if we are fearless, we are free. Free of the fear that controls us. Free of the ratrace that binds us. Free of the “things” that possess us. Free to be loving, joyful, peace-giving, patient, kind, generous, self-controlled. Free to be loved and to love with utter abandon – fear less. Fearless. God is with us, and we are free!

Christ Lutheran Church Youth Ministries News from Clint Mullet

Circle Kick-off

Our high school youth group is now called Circle! We kicked off on August 27th. We held a special ‘Vision Night’, where I shared the feedback from the kids, studies on teens, and other information that helped shape our new program and new approach. I shared about the new book that the volunteer team will be studying, Adoptive Youth Ministry, which we will be using as our new philosophy of youth ministry. This was a family event and attendance was in the 30-40 range. Our new format includes replacing lessons with guided discussions on topics selected by the teens! My role is to help create some questions and activities to get everyone talking and engaged. I have also brought in guest speakers to provide a unique voice to a specific topic. The kids have responded well.

Popcorn Fest Brat Booth Fundraiser After much fanfare, hours of preparation, and several meetings, Popcorn Fest has come and gone. We raised $4,000.00 for our National Youth Gathering trip, with the help of an amazing team of volunteers who worked alongside our young people. This is the real fruit we’ll see from this fundraiser – the interaction of the old and young generations of CLC members, together! I’m excited to say that we had middle school and high school youth working on every shift at the Booth! This was a successful year. I am excited for many more years doing this fundraiser.

National Youth Gathering Update We have 16 youth committed to the trip! The conference will still be held in Houston. The ELCA is working closely with city officials to determine how we can make the best impact and best use of the 30,000 people descending on the city this summer! Trinity Lutheran Church has agreed to join us for the trip. We’re still waiting to hear from Bethlehem Lutheran in Chesterton. Once we do, we’ll reserve the coach bus. We will most likely have to use a 56-seat coach bus as transportation!

Confirmation Confirmation has started! We have a great group of middle school teens and are excited to get to know them better over the next year! This group includes five 8th graders. Pastor Tim and I are excited about getting walking with these young teens on their spiritual journey. Our annual Confirmation Retreat was well-attended! We took 15 middle school youth to Camp Lutherwald for a weekend with God, nature, and Gaga-Ball!

Little Lamb Preschool

The New School Year We enjoyed a wonderful beginning of the school year. All 10 of the classes have been learning about the wonderful world God created and are now repeating new and familiar prayers before snack time and at circle time. We feel very blessed at LLP and thank CLC for providing this wonderful ministry.

Helping LLP We are looking forward to several ways our congregation and preschool families may help LLP …. Save your Printer Cartridges from your home copiers (big office sized ones are NOT recyclable unfortunately). We recycle them through “The Funding Factory” and earn cash for our school! Cartridges may be dropped off in the box provided by the LLP Board in the East Link or given to any of the LLP Staff. This fundraiser runs all year long! Looking ahead, please remember to stop by our Annual Scholastic Book Fair October 30th –November 3rd in the Youth Room. The selection will be wonderful as always. We will also have a table up on the Sunday before and after the sale (in the east link) for you to shop at as well. Humbly, we also add that we have several scholarship needs this year. There are different ways you can support a child, either by paying the monthly scholarship portion they have been awarded (9 months) or by offering a donation to our scholarship fund. The needs for this year are:

5- $55.00 scholarships each month for 9 months

Please let Jen Gottlieb, Director of LLP, know if you want to donate in this way by calling 462-6660, Ext 14 or emailing [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration!

Thank you for thinking of us with these exciting and easy ways to support our school!

Did you know?

This Fall LLP is fully enrolled. We shepherd 140 three, four, and five year olds. We have a staff of eleven energetic teachers, teaching assistants, and director. We are wonderfully supported by Christ Lutheran Church and the seven dedicated women on Little Lamb Preschool Board.

Christian Mission Statement

Little Lamb Preschool, in union with Christ Lutheran Church, serves God by shepherding His children as we nurture the whole child in partnership with families.

Fostering Stewardship Andy Nelson

“You know, I have actually thought more often and more seriously about stewardship in the last six weeks than I ever have in my life.”

That is what my wife said, a bit to my surprise but also gratitude, when I mentioned I’d been invited to write about stewardship. No, we haven’t been running an exciting capital campaign at church. And lately I’ve preached no sublime sermon series on generous giving.

But back in the spring, we did become licensed foster parents. And six weeks ago, just about the time my wife began pondering stewardship more deeply, we welcomed the first of two foster children into our home.

If stewardship is the work, joy, art, and responsibility of nurturing what belongs first to another, then our experiences with foster care are certainly giving us a fresh perspective. They have broadened the scope of what we think of as stewardship, and even more they have heightened the sense of both joy and responsibility that goes along with it.

Had you asked us before we became foster parents whether we thought raising our children was an act of stewardship, we’d have likely agreed that it was. We’d have acknowledged, at least in an abstract sense, that we were nurturing exquisite gifts from God. But there is something about being entrusted with someone else’s children -- especially in circumstances that illuminate how vulnerable those children and their families may be -- that makes the act of stewardship all the more clear.

We are, for example, specifically accountable to other people for the health and well-being of our foster children in a way that we are not for our own kids. To imagine harm coming to any of our biological children is frightening, yet to think of harm coming to someone else’s child when that child has been given into our care is even more deeply terrifying.

In a more mundane way, foster care often means doing things that are uncomfortable or difficult or tedious -- keeping records, justifying our parenting choices, following stricter guidelines for health and safety than we might otherwise, and in general doing a fair number of things that it would be easier not to do.

Foster care often means making decisions with someone else’s hopes and desires in mind. More pointedly, it sometimes means making choices we wouldn’t necessarily make for ourselves or our own children because we have the hopes and desires of someone else in mind.

But we accept this greater accountability, and we tend to these difficult tasks, and we make these decisions with others’ hopes and desires in mind because these things are all part of the responsibility we owe to those who have entrusted us with the gift of these children.

And it is worth it. Because as we watch these children grow and begin to flourish, we also share in the joy of their thriving.

For our family, thinking of foster care as an act of stewardship -- and thinking of stewardship as an act of foster care -- has helped us understand both a little better. For just as with the children we foster, in the stewardship of other resources, we recognize:

We are entrusted with gifts that are at once precious, vulnerable, and imbued with great potential.

There is an intentionality required and an accountability demanded to One beyond ourselves.

It will be necessary to make difficult decisions while keeping the hopes and desires of Another in mind.

We also live in the promise to witness and to share in the joy and flourishing that comes from good stewardship.

If you find the interconnection between stewardship and foster care at all fruitful, I encourage you to seek out others who are doing this work and hear their stories. They will surely have something to say!

Pipe Organ Online Benefit Auction

On behalf of the Pipe Organ Online Benefit Auction Committee, I would like to thank all of the CLC members and friends who supported the auction in any way. This includes: All of you who donated items that we offered and sold on the

auction. All of you who bid on the auction items, whether you won or not! All of the non-CLC friends and acquaintances who donated items

and who bid on the auction. For Housing Opportunities who promoted the auction on its social

media network. All of you who prayed for a successful auction and for those of us

who were running the auction!

I would say that the auction was a success. My expectations on the number of items we offered (over 200) and the money we raised to fund the organ and to support Housing Opportunities far exceeded my expectations! Because this article was due before the auction was over, a full report will be forthcoming.

I especially want to thank my individual committee members who made this auction possible; without their assistance, this auction would not have been successful. Specifically, that includes: Phyllis Schroeder, who did all of the computer data entry work with

instructions that were less than stellar! She also was responsible for the auction home page.

Nancy Bernthal who did a lot of solicitation and took almost all of the pictures you saw online.

John Bernthal who did part of the solicitation work and Paige Reichardt who proofread almost all of the item descriptions as well as numerous e-mail drafts and promotional pieces.

Jenny Bias who processed numerous auction notices in various forms of media!

Respectfully Submitted, Karl Reichardt, Online Auction Chair

Mark Your Calendar - Communion Conversations

In Holy Communion, we are given the treasure of Jesus' presence with us in a tangible way – his body and blood given for us for the forgiveness of sin. We gather at Christ’s invitation and in this ‘family meal’ he unites us with one another, with the church through all time and space. We are given a “foretaste” of the feast to come in the fullness of God’s kingdom, and we become what we receive – the body of Christ, given for the life of the world. At CLC, we treasure this gift, and the promises of God, recognizing that they are something too precious NOT to use. This is a gift we wouldn’t want to miss, a gift that belongs to all of God’s people. So we celebrate it weekly, and we welcome children to the table as they are ready to join us.

As families with younger children find that their children are hungry to receive Christ’s presence, we have Communion preparation for the whole family. We gather and talk about what this gift means, about Jesus' presence in his body and blood, about the forgiveness of sin that comes through his cross. We bake bread together and marvel at how God takes what is ordinary – bread from our hands, wine from nearby vineyards, and by his presence transforms it into something much more. A Communion Conversations event for families with Elementary-age and younger children will take place in the Spring.

We encourage families to continue to talk about Holy Communion, since our understanding shifts as we grow. And in preaching, both pastors try to continue to lift up the gift and mystery of the sacrament as we all continue to grow in faith. At 5th grade, we continue our learning, gathering all the students and parents talk together about the sacrament, and welcome to the table those who have not joined us at a younger age. Communion Conversations for 5th graders and families will be Wednesdays, November 1 and 8, at 7:00 pm.
