Christ Memorial Lutheran Church & School
January 2020
Happy New Year to you and your family!!! I really
mean it - I pray that you have the best year ever. I also
pray that 2020 is a healthy one and that God grants
you the desires of your hearts. God is our Heavenly
Father and is always out to give us what is truly best.
So, we can head into this New Year with the certainty
that our Lord goes with us and will be with us.
But, will the New Year be happy? Will 2020 be the
best year ever? I have come to the realization that when
I say that I hope the New Year to be a great one, I am
really hoping good things will happen to me. So, any
extra weight will leave my body, bad habits will no
longer tempt me, money will magically flow in my
direction, and everything will fall into place. And I
want all of this to happen with minimal change on my
part. Thing is - life doesn't work this way. God is good
and His power is amazing. With Him, we are enabled
to love and care for people in a way that is only
possible with God and yet we still have to love.
So, God does the heavy lifting and real change in our
lives flows from His love for us and for others. Jesus
forgave the woman caught in adultery in Matthew 8:11
and said to her: "from now on sin no more." When it
comes to the Spiritual growth that God desires for us,
His power is what transforms, and yet, what happens if
we refuse to approach those points of temptation and
sin differently? Check out this passage that we heard
on Christmas Eve from Titus 2:11-13: "For the grace of
God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly
passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly
lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope,
the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior
Jesus Christ."
Look at that Titus passage again. Jesus has come - He
died and rose and is coming back. He has saved us.
Knowing that we are saved changes us and the focus of
our lives. In 2020 we can have a 20/20 focus of God’s
grace and a life filled with following Jesus! And trust
me, following Jesus looks quite different from just
wishing things would change. So, for this New Year
we will be looking at the "New Year/New You"
sermon series. Throughout the month of January, God
wants to show us how He is working in our hearts and
lives to transform us and how we respond in faith and
live for Him. Have a Blessed and Godly New Year!
In Christ, Pastor Fred

President Report Joel McFadden
Recently, I have had the chance to attend several of
our Pre School and Family Life programs. I have
taken note of the positive atmosphere at these events.
Of course, much of that high energy is the natural
enthusiasm of the children participating. But equally,
I notice the way the adults present are acting. The
behavior of the kids rubs off on the adults.
I believe that our church services are very positive as
well, in both early and late, we receive a positive
message enjoy excellent music and Christian Fellow-
ship. Special activities like the Drive Thru Nativity
and VBS certainly add to that energy.
As we do some planning for the future of the church,
we are looking at our Vision. Several us are reaching
out to you. We seek your help in understanding what
your feelings are about Christ Memorial. We expect
lots of variety among the diverse group of people who
make up our congregation. Don’t be afraid to tell us
what you think.
Back to the kids on these Holiday Activities.
Their input is valuable, and their response is very
emotional. You don’t have to ask these little ones
twice; they love their Church.
Help us in our efforts to chart the future of our
church. Prayerfully consider your role in charting our
future with God’s blessings.
Happy New Year Joel McFadden
We are actively assembling a slate to present to a voters meeting in January.
There are about 24 elected vacancies, for which we have 8 names already. That
leaves 16 (mostly board positions) to be filled. (There are 5 officers and 13 boards
averaging 3 per board for a total 42 elected positions – see the list on the bulletin
board at the top of the stairs if you are interested or read the bylaws on-line.)
In addition to the elected positions, there are appointed and task related
committees in many areas. We need a couple of ladies and a couple of younger
people to help on the nominating committee. Please reach out to Rob Hall or Joel
McFadden if you would like to volunteer.
The congregation doesn’t fully function unless we have people to support kitchen events, altar guild, choir,
ushering, youth and family events, Sunday school teachers and superintendent, community outreach,
attendance recording, and a range of other volunteer functions.
Prayerfully consider what you can do.

STEWARDSHIP New Year’s Resolution: Being Faithful Stewards
As the Star of Bethlehem guided the wise men, may
Jesus Who is the Light of the World guide your
thoughts, words, and actions.
At the beginning of a new year, we often make goals
or resolutions about losing weight, getting more
exercise, being a better parent, reading more, or do
more traveling, etc. Allow me to suggest another
important goal or resolution for 2020 which would
be to grow as a Christian steward. This will be one
of the most fulfilling efforts because being a faithful
steward gives glory to God and enriches our lives. As we spend more time reading and studying God’s Word,
we discover His purposes for us. One of the wonderful joys and tasks that God has chosen for us is to be His
stewards.
At birth we become stewards, but at Baptism, we become God’s stewards.
God is the creator and the owner of all things, and He created us to be stewards
of His creation. By faith, we know that all we are and have are by God’s grace
so, with God’s strength, we willingly follow God’s purposes for our lives. As
God’s stewards, we manage all of life and life’s blessings in ways that give
Him honor and praise. In the management of God’s gifts, we take care of them
in His best interests, and we seek to please Him. Through the work of the Holy
Spirit, we can be faithful stewards who faithfully use our time, talents, and
money for God’s purposes.
At Christ Memorial, we are blessed with so many of you who have committed to being faithful stewards of all
the gifts that God entrusts to you. You serve and give so freely because of your deep love for the Lord. God is
doing some wonderful things through your caring and generous attitude. As Paul wrote, “This service that you
perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to
God” (2 Corinthians 9:12 NIV).
Thank you for giving so generously to our church. Your gifts enable us to be beacons of light to a world in
physical and spiritual need. The reward for this faithfulness will come from hearing God say, “Well done, good
and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:23).
Prayer: Lord, as we read and study Your Word, we pray that Your Spirit will enlighten our hearts and minds
so we may draw closer to You and better understand Your will for our lives. Give us grace to continue your
faithful stewardship of the many blessings You have entrusted to our care and may 2020 be a great year in our
journey of faith and as Christian stewards! We pray this in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.
Amen.

DECEMBER HAPPENINGS AND LOOKING ADHEAD
Welcome to 2020! At this time of year, I am always filled with anticipation for all God has planned for this new year. It is amazing that we serve a God who cares so much about every detail of our lives! I pray this year will bring you health and happiness!
When the children come back to school after the Christmas break it is always so much fun to see how they have changed from their first steps into the building in September. They now have made friends and feel like Christ Memorial Lutheran School is their school. The teachers are their teachers and they have missed seeing everyone! Listening to their conversations upon returning to school is nothing short of heart warming!
The children’s Christmas programs in December were truly beautiful! A very special CMLC member donated the finances for us to purchase handbells for the Kindergarten music program and the Kindergarten classes played, “Joy to the World” with the new handbells at the Christmas programs. It was wonderful to see them using their newly learned skills to glorify Jesus! If you’d like to view the video of the children playing the bells, you can see it on Christ Memorial’s Facebook page! Many thanks to Steve Schumm, Jon Futty and Sarah Heilman for giving so much of their time to set up and run the sound and video for the children’s programs! Thanks also to Pastor Hoover and Mr. Dave Sonnenberg for praying for the families at the programs.
I am so thankful to you, the congregation of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church for your love and prayer-ful support of the staff, children and families of Christ Memorial Lutheran School. You are the reason it all works!
Happy New Year!

Greetings from the Women’s Guild!
December Meeting - Tuesday, Dec. 10th at 6:30 pm:
Our December meeting was our annual Christmas Dinner and Celebration party. We had a lovely dinner prepared by Dori Juskalian and Carol Sonnenberg.
The Ingathering (a donation) collected benefited Young Lives with gifts in which a child could select and wrap for their mother.
We had a table filled with salt shakers collected by Lisa Parker’s grandmother. Everyone was invited to take home a pair.
The program after dinner was presented by Susan Bell and titled, “Sweet Christmas”. Pieces of candies represented the Christmas Story, such as almond joy and Luke 2:10, “And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”
The evening was concluded with the Secret Pal Exchange. Everyone had a turn to reveal who there secret pal was and to show their Christmas gift.
Sunday, January 12th Meeting:
In January after the late service, we will have our annual Luncheon. Come for food and fellowship! Our topic after lunch will be on quilting. Our hostesses will be Susan Bell and Susan Morris. UPCOMING:

We give thanks to our great and gracious Lord for this
past year and all that He did for us. He took us by the
hand, gave us a wonderful new warehouse, equipment
to use in operating it, funds for shipping and operating
and most precious of all the generous and faithful
volunteers without whom we could not operate.
We are very thankful for Hank Larson who stepped
into the inventory control and did an outstanding
job. Unfortunately for us Hank is retiring to North
Carolina. We wish Hank and Bev a joy filled
retirement, and who knows, possibly an OGT Branch
may start in North Carolina. At Hank’s leaving we are
happy to announce that Tom Fuesler, the bicycle
man, has stepped in and taken over the Inventory
responsibility. Tom has also become a member of our
Board of Directors. The Lord will provide!!!
In 2019 we were able to ship to many destinations both
domestically and internationally. When the storms
ravished the East Coast we were able, in cooperation
with other branches, to send food, medical equipment,
clothing and household items to North and South
Carolina and Florida. We also were able to assist the
disaster recovery financially in the Midwest. At our
convention in Norfolk, NE in September we saw
videos and first hand on the damage and the recovery
efforts.
Most memorable were the shipments to Tomassique,
Haiti and Ukraine. The Haiti container was loaded
with over 80,000 Kids Against Hunger meals and a
playground set for the school there. It’s a four hour
ride from Port au Prince to the mission school where
the children can have their only daily meal. The 42
bicycles were received with great joy and will be the
only transportation for the local villagers.
A Mission in Ukraine was our last shipment of the
year. Much winter clothing, wheel chairs, crutches,
canes and commodes were a part of the shipment. In
addition there was more than 20,000 Kids Against
Hunger meals provided for the Mission. That container
should arrive during the first part of January to help
over the winter months.
As we go into 2020 we are very thankful for a very
successful Matching Grant fund raising effort this past
November and December. Through the generosity of
our supporters we were able to surpass the matching
Grant of $10,000 generously given to us by two loyal
supporters. This will allow for a number of shipments
to those in need worldwide in 2020.
Our new warehouse, our volunteers and supporters
have requested and provided for the expansion of our
volunteer hours. In addition to Wednesdays from 10
to 2:30 we will be open on two Saturdays a month
from 9:30 to 12 noon starting with Saturday,
January 11th and 25th. This will allow for those
employed to join in the mission work for a brief time
on Saturday mornings. 8 Federal Rd, West Grove, Pa
will be open and waiting for you. There are restaurants
across the road if you wish to stay for lunch and a
mushroom farm down the road for fresh mushrooms.
No need to sign up, just drop in. It’s the big Dansko
warehouse if you are looking for a landmark. We plan to have our first shipment go out in late
spring. The Ukraine container took a great amount of
our packed items and so we will be counting the boxes
until we get close to 1800 apple boxes. Come out and
join the challenge. There is a strong possibility of
obtaining a quantity of used children’s desks and
chairs which we will be sending to a needy school.
Destination not yet confirmed.
The Lord has graciously taken us through 2019 and we
pray for His guidance as we enter 2020. Pray about
how you may become involved. Come out and spend
some time with a joyful group of people doing His
work.

OUTREACH - Live Nativity Linda Knoll Thank you for joining us on our
“Journey to Bethlehem”!
On Saturday, Dec. 7th, we had an all day event at
Christ Memorial. First we started out with the Nativity
Meet and Greet from 2 pm to 4 pm. Inside the children
and their family could go from stop to stop to meet the
Nativity animals and characters. There was also a stop
for Crafts and Refreshments.
Later as the darkness fell here at the church, the story
of Christ’s birth came to life with lights, sounds,
animals and actors. The weather was brisk and cold but
that didn’t stop our performers.
This was a wonderful outreach event for our church.
During the day we had 50 children along with their
parents and grandparents attending the Meet and Greet.
Each child was able to visit with the animals, do a craft
and received a storybook on Jesus’ birth and a Nativity
sticker page.
At night we had 120 cars touring the Live Nativity.
This was almost twice of what we had the previous
year. Each young child received a storybook on Jesus’
birth until we ran out of books (first time ever!). With
2 to 4 to even 6 people in a car, probably over 400
people heard the story of Christ’s birth during the 3
hours of the Drive-thru Nativity.
A special thanks to the many, many people who helped
out from those who constructed the sets, dressed the
actors and donated food. Everyone was wonderful. We
are so blest with so many talented people from those in
costumes to those behind the scene. None of this
would be possible without you

Opportunity to Serve Tom Bott Salvation Army Food Pantry - Manna from Heaven
We recently received once again an expression of appreciation from the Salvation Army for our contributions to the “Manna from Heaven” food pantry.
Susan Scovell, Special Projects Coordinator, wrote “Thank you so much for the effort you put into supporting The Salvation Army”. In response to a query about current needs she commented, “Our shelves are a little bare after the busy holiday season. I have attached our list of items always
needed in the pantry as a reference for you.” That list is reproduced on the next page.
The next food collection will be the second Sunday in January, the 12th.

WINTER ADULT BIBLE CLASSES - starting January 12th
Pilgrim's Progress II (book) - Teacher: Jane Hall, Library A few years back, I conducted a bible study on Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. In the
introduction to Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan addresses his second book, known as
Part II of The Pilgrim’s Progress, which embarks on a pilgrimage of its own. Bunyan
names the book Christiana and, thereby identifying it with Christian’s wife,
Christiana. Bunyan then imagines Christiana offering him several objections to the
proposed pilgrimage. First, she disagrees that some may not believe that she is truly
authored by the original writer of Christian’s tale. The author replies that Christiana
needs only send for him, and he will arrive to claim her as his creation. Second,
Christiana says that some readers might react angrily to the book. Here Bunyan
answers that she should not fear this since the first book has so many readers
across Europe and America. Third, Christiana objects that certain people might dislike the use of allegory.
Bunyan defends using fiction to tell what he considers to be religious truths. Finally, Christiana asks about
those readers who call Bunyan’s work mere romance, a style of heroic prose and verse narrative. Bunyan
says that not everyone can be pleased, but reminds Christiana of the long list of vibrant characters the
book contains and reassures her that readers will love her.
The Apostle's Creed (video & discussion)
Teacher: Dave Sonnenberg; Room 5 As part of CMLCS's Back-To-Basics curriculum, we offer this in-depth
study of The Apostles' Creed, a living link that connects us over the
centuries to the Early Church. This creed is a bond that unites believers
today from diverse cultures and traditions. It's a concise summary of
Biblical faith taught to new believers in the Early Church prior to their
being baptized. This nine-hour video series is by award-winning
producer-director T.N. Mohan. The programs demonstrate the timeless power and importance of the
Creed and feature an international and interdenominational cast of notable theologians from seminaries
such as The Asbury Theological Seminary; Wycliffe College, Oxford; London School of Theology; Andrew
University; and All Souls Church, London. The series traces the origin of the Apostles' Creed, placing it in
its historical context, and the theologians discuss each phrase of the Creed, emphasizing its relevance
and application to our lives today.
The Book of Hebrews (Lifelight guide, video) - Teacher: Ron Niesen, Room 4 This is an advanced study requiring reading material and completing questions prior
to Sunday classes. We will use a combination of the updated LifeLight study guide
and video clips from a JD Greear's sermon series on Hebrews. Often theologians
describe Hebrews as the most difficult book of the New Testament to study, but also
perhaps the most enriching. It is a New Testament book instructing us on the meaning
of the Old Testament - i.e., using what Jews knew to help them know Christ. This
letter, whose authorship is unknown, Luther said "... is a marvelously fine epistle. It
discusses Christ priesthood masterfully and profoundly on the basis of Scriptures and
extensively interprets the Old Testament in a fine way." Hebrews presents God's
grace by its detailed discussion of the person and work of Jesus Christ who is the
divine-human Prophet, Priest, and King, with over 20 titles being used to describe his attributes and
accomplishments. Each week we will start with a brief summary of the text and then discuss selected
questions from the guide which will be supplemented with supporting video clips.

Do you ever feel like you don't enjoy anything because you're trying to do everything? You're filling your calendar, draining your bank account, and multitasking your way through life. You're efficient . . . but exhausted. You just need a little bit of breathing room. With one surprisingly simple invitation, God offers a way to trade your overwhelming pace for one that will finally bring you peace. This study will show you how.
We look forward to seeing you there. For more information, contact Becca Futty at 484-319-2398 or [email protected].

We begin in the library at 9:00 am with fellowship, including coffee and snacks. We will then break into our bible study groups. Once again, we will be offering two classes.
This study guides you through the Bible chronologically while connecting New and Old Testament passages together in daily reading. Included are study questions, videos, maps, and more so that you can go beyond merely reading the Bible to experiencing the life in its pages.
Journey into God’s Word to discover the fullness and freedom you can experience as a woman and as a mother. You will find the source to fill your “love bucket”, recognize common mothering traps and deal decisively with self-defeating habits.
Our classes conclude at 11:30 each week and babysitting is provided. Any questions, please call Cindy Kaminskas at 610-331-0704
