Teachers who spent their lives helping us learn math, physics, writing, literature, and the values that have shaped us more deeply as human beings: truth, integrity, perseverance, forgiveness. Now close the yearbook and go gaze at a crucifix. Suspended there is an image of the best teacher we will ever have. The Divine Teacher who embodies all virtues and empowers us to actually be honest, just, and merciful. On this Catechetical Sunday, Saint John Paull II reminds us, “that the majesty of Christ the Teacher and the unique consistency and persuasiveness of His teaching can only be explained by the fact that His words, His parables and His arguments are never separable from His life and His very being. Accordingly, the whole of Christ’s life was a continual teaching: His silences, His miracles, His gestures, His prayer, His love for people, His special affection for the little and the poor, His acceptance of the total sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of the world, and His Resurrection are the actualization of His word and the fulfillment of revelation. Hence, for Christians, the crucifix is one of the most sublime and popular images of Christ the Teacher. These considerations follow in the wake of the great traditions of the Church and they all strengthen our fervor with regard to Christ, the Teacher who reveals God to man and man to Himself, the Teacher who saves, sanctifies and guides, who lives, who speaks, rouses, moves, redresses, judges, forgives, and goes with us day by day on the path of history, the Teacher who comes and will come in glory” (Catechesi Tradendae, #9). As our personal histories, our family histories, and our own share in salvation history unfolds, we continue to learn from our greatest teacher, Jesus. He reminds us in this weekend’s Gospel reading that being His disciple, knowing Him personally, requires taking up the cross. This is more than “offering it up” when we stub a toe. Not merely gritting our teeth and enduring suffering, we cling to our Crucified Savior who is the only one who redeems our hurts and provides meaning in the midst of tragedy. If there is a wound in your heart, an experience of pain, loss, guilt, fear or regret nagging at your soul, bring it to the Cross of Jesus. Say along with the prophet Isaiah, “The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame” (Isaiah 50:7). Jesus redeems suffering. He teaches through the Cross. Let us learn from Him.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2018THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

CHRIST TEACHES THROUGH THE CROSS

Flip through your yearbook. Past the signature pages wishing you a “great summer.” Look at the faculty.

Say along with the prophet Isaiah, “The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame” (Isaiah 50:7).

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA VINCENTIANS...

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says “If a man wishes to come after me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross, and follow in my steps.” The cross of Jesus and the crosses of His members can evangelize us: the sick, who bear illness with courage; the grieving, who hope against hope; the dying, who clearly trust in the Resurrection; the suffering of our poor brothers and sisters who are hungry and homeless, but who still trust in God’s love.

Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul… we want to help!

Our quarterly Name Tag Sunday has been very well received. To continue this outreach, we need your help handing out nametags the weekend of September 22-23. This is a great family service project.

Sign up on the parish website: www.stsusanna.org/nametagsunday or contact Karen Carter, 513-777-5325, to be a part of our ongoing efforts to build community at St. Susanna.

SLEEPING MATS FOR THE HOMELESS Tuesday, September 25th at 6:30pm in the St. Susanna Cafeteria.

Learn how to make sleeping mats for the homeless - no experience needed!

Before you throw away that plastic grocery bag, consider this: It could be helping the homeless get a better night’s sleep. Join fellow parishioners in learning how to make “plarn” (plastic yarn) and crochet it into a sleeping mat. The advantage of using plarn is that it keeps individuals off the ground which can be cold and damp. Plarn also provides for additional comfort.

be rejected. Suffering and rejection are not absolute evils. Our goal in life can’t be to avoid suffering and to be accepted by everyone. If we pursue good and follow Jesus, we will also experience rejection. When Jesus tells us that following him means taking up our

cross, it shouldn’t surprise us when a cross is planted in our path with a sign saying, “Pick me up.”

In the first reading, the prophet says he opened his ear and didn’t rebel. When the consequences of this faith were abuse and rejection, he didn’t shield his body and face. He could do so because, like Jesus, he was rooted in love and not fear. He didn’t fear their arguments, ideas, and insults. He didn’t fear what they could do to his body, for they couldn’t touch his soul, his heart, his freedom.

When we know we are loved, and are following what is right, we have a confidence and a strength that the world knows not. It is a different way of seeing, hearing, and judging. It is of a higher order, a deeper source, and brings total peace. And it takes some getting used to!

Changing Our Mentality

Jesus presents a different way of seeing, hearing, and judging. It takes some getting used to!

Peter, as a good friend, wants to protect Jesus from the cross he is announcing. Yet Jesus doesn’t want protection from the will of the Father—rather he wants

[Jesus said,] “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”Mark 8:33

For ReflectionWhen amidst situations of opposition, do I find my peace in Jesus and the truth? What might steal my peace? Talk to Jesus about it and look for a solution in his gospel of the cross.
