CTK Newsletter September 6, 2016
Principal’s Message Welcome back to all returning students and a warm welcome to our new Christ the King students and families. I hope that you enjoy the new format of the newsletter. In September, it is common to send home a large volume of papers/information/forms. Once again this year, the majority of the information has been included in the front of the agenda. Please take time to read the agenda carefully. It has our Code of Conduct, School Calendar and Routines, Allergy Awareness, Homework Guidelines, Lunch Ideas, and Parent Tips. Stay connected to events at CTK by following us on Twitter @StTeresaCTK and Instagram @CTKinAction.
This year’s theme is Healthy Mind, Happy Heart. We are going to focus on mental health for children and adults. Many of the activities will promote healthy relationships, positive talk, and raise awareness to the importance of taking care of our mental and physical well-‐being. Each month we will have a different focus. Teacher will complete activities, our assemblies will have connections and we will also provide you with information that you can use at home.

September Theme: Emotions & Empathy Because life will be full of difficult emotions, it is important to help children learn how to identify the feelings they are feeling. In September the school will be talking with the students about the importance of understanding one's own emotions without judgement. As well, we will look at the importance of noticing the emotions of those around them, or in other words "empathy". Empathy helps students understand another person's point of view, consider another person's feelings, and appreciate that everyone experiences things differently. At home you can support our efforts through helping to expand your child’s emotional vocabulary.
October & November the school will look at healthy ways to express these emotions. Sometimes students express their emotions in ways that are problematic. A student might cry when they are frustrated or scream when they are angry. It is important to try to confirm the student’s emotions and then teach them to express their feelings in a healthy way. For example you can offer reminders such as, “its ok to tell me how you feel, but it’s not ok to hurt others or things when you feel (name feeling).”
Feeling WordsWe often only think of teaching common emotions like happy, sad, mad, etc. But there are many other feeling words that children should learn to express, such as the following: Angry, Brave, Bored Calm, Cheerful, Confused, Curious, Disappointed Embarrassed, Excited, Frustrated, Fantastic, Friendly, Generous, Ignored, Impatient,
Important, Interested, Jealous, Lonely, Loving Overwhelmed, Proud, Peaceful, Relieved, Silly, Surprised, Safe ,Stubborn, Shy, Satisfied Tense, Uncomfortable
Name the feeling: Help children name their feelings. E.g. “When I said it was time to get off the computer, you seemed disappointed.” By naming feelings it allows children to develop an emotional vocabulary so they can talk about their feelings. Identify feelings in themselves and others: Talk about feelings they have and those that you see in others. “I hear you laughing, are you happy?” Talk about how feelings can be expressed: What do you do when you get mad? How do people know you are happy? Talk about ways children express their emotions.
Looking forward to an amazing 2016-‐2017 school year! Julie Aubé

TCDSB Virtue of the Month: Hospitality
Hospitality is shown when we welcome guests — including strangers and enemies —into our lives with kindness.
Sometimes hospitality requires that we cross boundaries and reduce some of the barriers established in our society to keep "the other" out because we believe in the ultimate dignity of every living being.
Small Acts of Kindness• Community cleanup- work
“Together as One” to keep your neighbourhood looking its best. Take pride in your surroundings.
• Tutoring program/Big Brothers/Sisters during lunch at school or after Sunday Mass in the Church hall.
• Sharing a meal is a traditional way of extending hospitality and fostering a sense of community. If possible, invite a new friend to sit with you during lunch today!

TCDSB Year of the Parish 2016-2017 The second year in our three pastoral plan focusing on "Together With One Voice: Harmonizing our Faith Through Family, Parish and School”. It is an opportunity to celebrate the important role that our parishes play in our school communities and in the lives of the students, staff and families that we serve.
During the Year of the Parish, we look for ways to more fully engage our staff and students in the lives of their local parish community, and to welcome our pastors and parish community into school events and activities. Let's celebrate the Family-‐Parish-‐School partnership!
TCDSB Prayer for Harmonizing our Faith Through Family, Parish and School
Almighty and Ever-‐loving God, We give you thanks for the blessings of our Families, where the seed of faith is planted; for the Body of Christ, the Church, where faith is celebrated; and for our Schools, where faith is nurtured. Lord, we believe that Catholic Education is at its best when Families, Parishes and Schools play, pray and work together to spread the Good News to all. Help us to imitate the unity of the Trinity as we continue to grow in our faith and love towards you, and to one another. Through the guidance of the Holy Family, the model of all Christian families, and the intercession of all the Saints, may our Families, Parishes and Schools remain places where the Gospel is shared with joy, courage and love. We pray through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Parent Engagement Christ the King values the involvement of parents in the education of their children, and welcomes their participation in the lives of our school community. There are a number of ways you can be involved; by joining our council, now the Catholic School Parent Committee or by volunteering in a number of ways. Don’t hesitate to communicate with your child’s teacher, or principal if you have any questions or concerns. Communication is essential between home and school, and we are committed to ensure that we share as much information with you as possible.
Extra Curricular Activities Here at Christ the King, we continue to value the importance of student engagement through activities outside the classroom. Please read our communications carefully so that you don’t miss out on any opportunities for your child to participate. A more detailed outline will be sent home soon with upcoming activities, however, back by popular demand will be our Grade 1-‐6 intramurals. Students do require running shoes to participate, and are not required to come every scheduled day. They are drop-‐in sessions that run from 11:15a.m. – 11:55a.m. in our gym.

Combined Classes This year, at least half of our classes are combined, however there will be quite a bit of collaboration with the teachers to effectively deliver the curriculum. We also pride ourselves in offering creative projects and activities that keep the students engaged. We remind students that even though they may not be with all of their grade friends, there is plenty of time to socialize during recess. Class reorganization could occur through board direction anytime up until September 30th.
Disclaimer The school will send home information from nonprofit organizations from time to time. Please exercise caution any time they participate in or enrol their child in an outside organization’s event after school hours. The school and the TCDSB are not liable for the quality of service these organizations provide or for the safety of the participants. We forward this information to keep our parent community informed of the wide variety of opportunities available with our local community.
Punctuality As always, we are emphasizing the importance of punctuality. As educators, we see the difference between students who arrive on time and those who do not. There is less anxiety, disruption and better organization for the child as they are in a routine setting. The first 15 minutes could include agenda checks, review of the day which all students find helpful, announcements and prayer. At the end of the year, we will be celebrating all the students who show a commitment to being punctual, please support the school in instilling this life skill in your child.
Toronto Public Health If you received a letter from Toronto Public Health, please update your child's immunization record with us using one of the following options:
• Phone: 416-‐392-‐1250 • Online reporting • Fax: 416-‐338-‐2487
If your child does not have all the needed vaccines, please contact your health care provider.
