From the Pastor’s Desk
This week, our country celebrates its independence. Since 1776, the United States of America has been free to govern itself. Yet, we know that a nation without a strong moral compass will inevitably abuse its freedom. Therefore, as Christians we take seriously our responsibility to live according to the Gospel. Only by leading virtuous lives, as taught by our faith tradition, can we hope to build a safe and productive society. Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, wrote: “Without morals, a republic cannot subsist any length of time. They therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure, and which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.” Let us remember to pray for our country this Independence Day, that we might use our freedom in a way that is pleasing to God. We believe that, ultimately, God is the author of our liberty. Christ has freed us from sin and death and thereby enabled us to live and love heroically. May the Lord bless you throughout the week.

The Sisters’ Corner
All young women in the parish between the ages of 16-22 are invited to attend a leadership retreat the weekend of July 14-16 at the convent at St. James the Less. The retreat will equip young women to spread God’s word to their peers. Please contact the sisters for more information. (This event is in Spanish.) All married couples are invited to attend a couple’s retreat titled “Dinamicas Matrimoniales,” on the weekend of July 29-30. The retreat will be held in the school gym. The office staff would like to wish everyone a safe and blessed Fourth of July weekend! As we celebrate our nation's freedom, we
honor the courageous men and women dedicated to preserving it. Please note that the office will be closed on Monday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 4. Daily Mass on Tuesday, July 4, will be at 9:00 a.m. This Friday, July 7, we will have a special Holy Hour for Immigrants beginning at 9:00 p.m. We will offer prayers on behalf
of the immigrants and refugees throughout the world. The men of the parish will then have the opportunity to remain in the church for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 6:00 a.m. the following morning. (This event is in Spanish.)
News from the Knights of Columbus: We will have our next blood
drive on Sunday, July 16, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Sign-ups will be this weekend and the next. Also, we need help from the men of the parish. The Knights will be roasting a pig for the Parish Picnic on July 23, and they need your assistance! Talk to the Knights after Mass if you can lend a hand! (This event is bilingual.)

Esta semana, nuestro país celebra su independencia. Desde 1776, los Estados Unidos ha sido libre de gobernarse a sí mismo. We will be selling a newly designed parish tee shirt this weekend. You may put the completed order form with payment in an envelope marked “Tee Shirt Order” in the church basket, or stop by the vestibule before or after all Masses this weekend. On Monday, August 14, please join us for a Pilgrimage to the Shrine of our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio, on the Vigil of the Feast of the Assumption. Buses will depart the church parking
lot that day at 6:00 p.m. The candlelight procession and outdoor Mass at the Shrine begin at 9:00 p.m. We will depart Carey to return home around midnight. The cost is $15 per person. Hollow. Hope Hollow is a non-profit organization, founded by Jane Jacquemin-Clark and Kevin Clark, parishioners of Holy Name parish. Their mission is to provide lodging, meals, transportation, hospitality and emotional support to persons with cancer, as well as their loved ones, while they are traveling to Columbus for their medical treatment. Why is the Church referred to as “She” or “Her”?
Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith. July 2017
Imagery and symbolism help describe Christ’s relationship to the body of believers known as the Church. For example, the Church is called Christ’s “pure bride” (2 Corinthians 11:2). St. John wrote of the Church as the New Jerusalem, “prepared as a bride
adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2). The Church is also a “mother.” “Because we
receive the life of faith through the Church, she is
our mother” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #169).
Through baptism, we become her children.
“It is good sense to be slow to anger, and an honor to overlook an offense” (Proverbs 19:11). Human nature entails taking offense when someone says or does something we don’t like. When it happens often, however, being offended doesn’t just hurt our feelings, it compromises our happiness and wellbeing. Try these ideas to let it go … Assume the best. Most people aren’t out to get us. Unless proven otherwise, believe that others have good intent and don’t mean to offend. They’re just living their lives. Step back. We often get upset because others disagree with or don’t share our opinions. Opinions are separate from identities. Someone can disagree with
what we think but still enjoy who we are.
Don’t make it
about you. Thinking that
what others do or think re�ects
on you is fertile soil for being easily
and often offended. Most of what happens
around us has nothing to do with us. Allowing others
to live their own lives regardless of you and yours takes
a huge burden off your shoulders. Break the habit. Taking offense easily is a habit that, fortunately, can be broken. Instead of noticing what others are doing “to” us, we can choose to note what is done “for” us by God and others. Practicing gratitude is more pleasant than feeling hurt.
St. Lawrence of Brindisi Born to a family of Italian merchants,
St. Lawrence’s parents died when he was young. Educated by an uncle, he entered the Capuchin Order when he was sixteen. He was ordained seven years later. A Biblical scholar and preacher, St. Lawrence had a gift for languages, including Italian, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, German, Bohemian, Spanish, and French. He worked to spread the in�uence of the Capuchin Franciscan order, establishing monasteries in Germany and Austria.
Can you see God? Are you aware of God’s presence in your life? Looking for ways in which he blesses us rather than thinking about prayers he hasn’t yet answered makes us more aware of how he moves in our lives. Originally, scapulars were part of the religious habit worn by members of
certain orders. The smaller scapular worn by lay people consists of two small squares of fabric
worn on the chest and back connected by strings.
The most common scapular is the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. According to one tradition, the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite monk, in Cambridge, England, on July 16, 1251. Our Lady gave the scapular to him as a sign of her favor for the Carmelite Order and promised that whoever wore the brown scapular until death would not suffer the �res of Hell, be preserved in time of danger, and experience peace and protection. Any Catholic can wear the scapular if desired, but it must be blessed by a priest to be a sacramental. The scapular is worn under the clothes. It is worn continuously (except during bathing or swimming). For Catholics who wear it, it is a reminder of Mary’s motherly love and intercession.
July 1 – St. Junípero Serra (1784). Born in 1713, St. Junípero joined the Franciscan Order in 1730. In 1750, Fr. Serra left everything behind to become a missionary in America. He founded 21 missions and taught the Native Americans trades, from farming to crafting. He also established the foundation for protections for the Native Americans and brought them the gift of faith. July 22 – St. Mary Magdalene (1st century). Mary Magdalene was the woman from whom Jesus expelled seven demons in St. Luke’s gospel
(Luke 8:2). She helped to �nancially support Jesus’ ministry and stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. She was the one who �rst informed the Apostles of Jesus’ Resurrection. July 26 – Sts. Joachim and Anne (1st century). Little is known about Jesus’ grandparents, but we know Mary was raised in a devout home. Her unshakeable faith, her devotion to the laws of her religion, and her steadiness in moments of crisis indicate the values with which she was raised.
If you knew that Jesus were coming to visit you, you would probably work hard to get ready. You would make your home sparkle, prepare special food for him, and block out the time so you could give him your full attention. This is what we can do to prepare to receive Jesus every Sunday in the Eucharist. Clean house. Do whatever is necessary to be properly disposed for communion with Christ. If you are not free from serious sin, attend Confession, do penance, and amend your life. Prepare. The Eucharistic Fast is an ancient
custom that helps us to receive Holy Communion with reverence. Abstain from food or drink, with the exceptions of water and medicine, for at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion. Give him your attention. The rituals of the Mass help us to focus completely on God’s love for us and ours for him. Follow
along with the prayers (use a missal, if necessary) and sing the songs so that you don’t miss a word.
Matthew 13:44-52, Hidden treasure.
In this Gospel reading, Jesus compared several scenarios of extraordinary good fortune to the experience of discovering the Kingdom of God. In the �rst scenario, a man discovers a treasure buried in a �eld. Jesus’ audience knew uncovering such a treasure would change their lives. Just so, discovering the hidden treasure of the Kingdom can give new meaning to our lives, too. In the second scenario, a merchant �nds a valuable pearl. In the barter-based economy of ancient Israel, a merchant’s fortune depended upon the quality and desirability of what he had to sell. A valuable pearl
was well worth the painstaking search to �nd it. To those hungry and searching for God, Jesus assured them they would �nd the answers they sought in the Kingdom.
Finally, Jesus compared the separation between the evil and righteous to the sifting that happens when a large catch is
brought ashore. Similarly, when we put our whole life in
service to our love for God, then the individual pieces fall into place around that love. Whatever is contrary to this love falls away.

¿Por qué nos referimos a la Iglesia como “Ella”?
Las imágenes y los símbolos ayudan a describir la relación de Cristo con el conjunto de creyentes conocido como la Iglesia. Por ejemplo, la Iglesia es llamada “casta virgen” (2 Corintios 11:2). San Juan se re�rió a la Iglesia como la Nueva Jerusalén, “engalanada como
una novia ataviada para su esposo” (Apocalipsis 21:2). La Iglesia es también “madre”. “Como
recibimos la vida de la fe a través de la Iglesia, ésta es
nuestra madre” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, #169). Nos
hacemos sus hijos mediante el bautismo.
“El hombre sensato domina su ira y tiene a gala pasar por alto la ofensa” (Proverbios 19:11). Las personas, por naturaleza, se ofenden cuando alguien dice o hace algo que no les gusta. Pero cuando eso sucede con frecuencia, sentirse ofendido no sólo hiere nuestros sentimientos, sino que además pone en peligro nuestra felicidad y nuestro bienestar. Pongan a prueba estas ideas para no dar más vueltas a las cosas… Supongan lo mejor. La mayoría de las personas no quieren hacernos daño. A menos que le demuestren lo contrario, convénzase de que la gente tiene buenas intenciones y no quieren ofender. Sencillamente viven sus vidas. Den un paso atrás. A menudo nos disgustamos porque la gente no está de acuerdo con nosotros o no comparte nuestras opiniones. Las opiniones son algo
distinto de la identidad. Alguien puede estar en desacuerdo con lo que pensamos
y disfrutar en cambio
de quienes somos.
No lo conviertan en
algo personal. Pensar que lo que
otros hacen o piensan dañan su imagen es
caldo de cultivo para sentirse ofendido con
facilidad y con frecuencia. La mayoría de lo que sucede no
tiene nada que ver con nosotros. Dejar que los demás vivan sus vidas al
margen de usted y de los suyos le quitará un enorme peso de encima. Pierda el hábito. Ofenderse con facilidad es un hábito que, por suerte, puede perderse. En lugar de �jarse en lo que la gente “nos hace”, podemos optar por ver lo que Dios y los demás hacen “por nosotros”. Practicar la gratitud es más agradable que sentirse herido.
San Lorenzo de Bríndisi Nacido en Bríndisi, Italia, en el seno de una
familia de comerciantes venecianos, los padres de san Lorenzo murieron cuando él era joven. Educado por un tío, ingresó en la orden de los capuchinos a la edad de dieciséis años. Fue ordenado sacerdote siente años más tarde. Estudioso erudito de la Biblia y predicador, san Lorenzo estaba muy dotado para las lenguas, entre ellas el italiano, el latín, el hebreo, el griego, el alemán, el bohemio, el español y el francés. Se esforzó por difundir la in�uencia de la orden capuchina, estableciendo monasterios en Alemania y Austria.
¿Puede ver a Dios? ¿Es consciente de la presencia de Dios en su vida? Al buscar las formas en las que nos bendice en lugar de pensar en las oraciones que todavía no ha atendido, somos más conscientes de cómo él se mueve en nuestras vidas. Por supuesto, Dios está con nosotros lo veamos o no. Pídale que le dé ojos para verlo.

En su origen, los escapularios eran parte del hábito religioso de los miembros de
ciertas órdenes. Los seglares llevan un
escapulario más pequeño que
consiste en dos cuadrados de tela
unidos por un cordón que
colocan sobre el pecho y la espalda. El escapulario más habitual es del de Nuestra Señora del Carmelo. Según la tradición, la Bienaventurada Madre se le apareció a san Simón Stock, un monje carmelita, en Cambridge, England, el 16 de julio de 1251. Nuestra Señora le dio un escapulario como símbolo de su preferencia por la orden carmelitana y le prometió que quien llevara el escapulario hasta la muerte no sufriría el fuego del in�erno, estaría a salvo de peligro y viviría protegido y en paz. Cualquier católico puede llevar el escapulario si lo desea, pero debe estar bendito por un sacerdote para tener valor sacramental. El escapulario se lleva bajo la ropa. Se lleva siempre (excepto durante el baño o cuando se nada). Para los católicos que lo llevan, es un recuerdo del amor maternal y de la intercesión de María.

Se sabe poco sobre los abuelos de Jesús, pero sabemos que María creció en un hogar devoto. Su fe inquebrantable, su devoción a las leyes de su religión y su temple en momentos de crisis evidencian los valores con los que fue educada.
Si supiera que Jesús viene de visita, usted probablemente se esforzaría para prepararse. Limpiaría a fondo su casa, prepararía comida especial y reservaría tiempo para poderle prestar toda su atención. Así es como podemos prepararnos para recibir a Jesús cada domingo en la Eucaristía. Limpie la casa. Haga lo necesario para estar bien preparado para la comunión con Cristo. Si no está libre de pecado mortal, vaya a confesar, haga la penitencia y enmiende su vida. Prepárese. El ayuno eucarístico es una antigua

Mateo 13:44-52, Un tesoro escondido
En esta lectura del Evangelio, Jesús comparó varias situaciones afortunadas al descubrimiento del Reino de Dios. En el primer escenario, un hombre descubre un tesoro enterrado en un campo. El público de Jesús sabía que encontrar un tesoro así cambiaría sus vidas. Y de ese modo también, descubrir el tesoro escondido del Reino puede dar nuevo sentido a nuestras vidas. En el segundo escenario, un comerciante encuentra una valiosa perla. En la economía del trueque del antiguo Israel, la fortuna de un comerciante dependía de la calidad y el atractivo de su mercancía. Una perla valiosa justi�caba con creces la
di�cultad de buscarla. A los que tienen hambre de Dios y lo buscan, Jesús les asegura que encontrarán en el Reino las respuestas
que buscan. Finalmente, Jesús comparó la separación entre los malos y los justos a la criba que se realiza cuando se pesca una gran cantidad de
peces. Así también, cuando ponemos toda nuestra vida al servicio
de nuestro amor a Dios, las piezas individuales encajan alrededor de ese amor. Lo que es contrario a ese amor desaparece.
