RCIA: Your Faith Journey A few years ago, an elderly gentleman and a mother of one our school children , here at Christ the Servant, came to me in the summer. Both were raised in another faith tradition, yet married to a Catholic. They had children
whose sacramental initiation occurred at the parish over the years. They attended Mass on a regular basis; attended all of the parent classes for their children’s baptisms, first penance, first Eucharist, and confirma-tion, and marriages.
I use this example, because knowing them for all these years , I really did not want them to be placed in a lengthy RCIA process. What in reality should have happened, now that I reflect on my own experience, is very different. I now believe that we should have met for a few times and celebrated the Reception of Baptized Christians into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church, at the Saturday vigil Mass surrounded by family and friends, who saw them here every week. When I look back they were probably in many ways more Catholic than many Catholics and perhaps the greatest injustice was to disregard their life – long faith journey and their readiness for full communion.
This may represent your own journey of faith – IF - you are reading this bulletin – OR if someone has shared this with you. Not everyone belongs in the same grouping and not everyone needs to be involved in the same process.
If you know of someone who is on a faith journey that is leading them toward full communion with the Catholic Church – please show them this article – and invite them to share their story with me.

RCIA Inquiry Sessions: For those wanting
to find out more about the Church and
for those High School and Adult
Catholics who have not received the
Sacrament of Confirmation.
The Inquiry Sessions for the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin on Monday evening, October 4 at 9:00 a.m. in Seton Hall. This is an op-portunity for those who are not Catho-lic to find out more about the Church. This is a time of discernment and dis-cussion and of sharing ones own faith journey and exploring together in com-munity whether ones personal faith journey can best be lived out within the Roman Catholic Church. Again, I em-
phasize it is a time of searching, questioning and learning, and decision making. Those individuals who have been baptized as Roman Catholics, but have not been confirmed (High School and Adult) should attend these sessions. Confirmation will be administered at the Easter Vigil with the Candidates and Catechumens. The RCIA team will be coordinated by Rosemarie Houser and team members incorporating a variety of instructors. Also sharing in the RCIA journey will be individuals who are continu-ing in their own faith journey and who will be companions with you in your own journey. The RCIA Inquiry Sessions are not intended as adult education classes for those who are full members of the Church. Adult Education will be provided for those individuals and announced at a later time.
“This is my commandment, that you love one
another as I have loved you. No one has great-
er love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s
friends. You are my friends if you do what I
command you. . You did not choose me but I
chose you “

RCIA Time Schedule
In order to better align the RCIA with the often time hectic daily experience of our candidates and catechumens;
we believe that Sunday Mornings present the better time for the RCIA Formation Program. Families continually
run into juggling work schedules, driving children to multiple after-school programs, preparing meals after work,
and hopefully having some time to spend together as a family.
This coming October 4, we will begin the formal process of the RCIA. Teaching, Reflection and Discussion
Sessions will be held on Sunday Mornings, from 9:00 until 10:30. This will provide families the opportunity for
their children to attend our Parish School of Religion if not attending our Parish School, while sharing in the
RCIA Process.
Attention Parents:
We also will be providing a Pre-School 3 – 4 – 5 year old religious education program, in addition to a regu-
lar K-8 School of Religion. Our intention is that this will assist our families - who attend either our Parish
School here at Our Lady of Peace and our Parish School of Religion – for either attending Mass at 9:00
a.m., and or participating in the RCIA Process for this year.

Saint Pope John Paul II, speaking on Catholic Education, had high praise for schools that are clearly Catholic, but also welcomes non-Catholic students , making a tangible influence in building communities of peace and justice. Furthermore, he commented that Catholic schools must help their respective communities promote dialogue in a multicultural society. When students from diverse races, faith traditions and religions study together and relate within the learning community, it enables them to get to know each other and learn to respect their differences. The Holy Father stated that a really Catholic education is one that proposes “a Christian vision of the person and the world, which offers youth the possibility of a fruitful dialogue between faith and reason." Saint Pope John Paul II stated that the purpose of a Catholic school is to offer an education "which allows the young not only to acquire human, moral and spiritual maturity, but also to see how they can work effectively for the transformation of society." Dr. Mary McDonald, the former Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Memphis, is remembered as
saying that we are Catholic not because our students are Catholic, but because we the leaders within the
Catholic Learning Community are Catholic. Sharing a vision of our world that is aligned with God’s Project –
and of Jesus’ own mission of “repairing the world” would seem to require us to transcend the limits placed
on God’s unconditional love and create a welcoming environment. LGaetano
