1 CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JUNE 2013 PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS THE CONTENT OF OUR HOPE “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” These words should be most familiar to us. We pray them just as Jesus taught his disciples. These very words of prayer provide both comfort and direction for our living, a way to hold onto hope even in the midst of brokenness and as a guide to find our way into the gift of tomorrow in spite of our failures today. “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done” speak to a reality beyond our human scope and interests. Not only is this world of God’s making, it also has a purpose and a destiny of God’s choosing. To be sure, our shared human conduct throughout history has had and continues to have a profound effect upon the world. Our actions, good and bad, impact the natural fabric of the world we inhabit. The consequences of past behavior is revealed in the present, and the effects of what we do today will inherently be noticed by those of tomorrow. Nevertheless, Jesus has revealed to us that our world has a future beyond the sum measure of our physical and social participation in the world. Our world is infused with God’s interests and plan. To pray “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done” is to trust God’s way, to attempt to faithfully live under God’s authority, to believe that what God desires will indeed happen, and to understand that the state of our and the world’s future is thankfully beyond our control. “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done” is a prayer which expresses confidence and certainty in God’s wisdom and power as well as providing a sense of relief and hope that the world and its inhabitants will not forever wear the marks of human sin and apostasy. To pray “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done” may seem a cry of urgency to get us out of the mess in which we currently find ourselves, especially in times of fear and foreboding. But these words as Jesus taught reveal a deep and abiding commitment and investment that God has with all that God has created. Any hope that we might have can only be recognized by the revelation of God’s grace as seen in and through Jesus, which alone overcomes the devastating effects of sin and its consequences.

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

THE CONTENT OF OUR HOPE

“Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” These words should be most familiar to us.

The content of our hope is not to be found in the changes we anticipate to make for the better or the desirous “good” of our conduct, no matter how “good” the intention. To pray “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done” rather places the content of our hope on the powerful will of God for whom all things are possible. The God whom we come to know through Jesus, the One who raised Jesus from the dead, is a God who loves us and the created world. This love is abiding and eternal, and has its place here “on earth and it is in heaven.” That being said, even though we, apart from God, are unable to produce, in and of ourselves, that which will provide a future of hope, we can now participate in that hope that comes from God’s grace (heaven on earth, if you please) by conducting ourselves in a manner which demonstrates our trust in God’s will and purpose by following in the steps of Jesus, marked by unconditional, nonjudgmental love and generosity.

Blanket knotting workdays

Christ’s United’s Tuesday morning Sewing Circle will meet only once in June, on June 11. We work from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You don’t have to be there the whole time. Come when you can and leave when you must.

If you are unable to come to the church on the workdays, but would like to work on blankets at home talk to Judy Mecouch or Georgetta Bowes. As always, clean fabric and filling (new or used from old sheets, clothing, etc.) for the quilts are welcome. Also, don’t throw out that old mattress pad. Bring it to the church and it can be used for filler for the quilts. If you want more information talk to Judy or Georgetta.

Nowadays we are consumed by desires to buy things we do not need, with money we do not have, to impress people we do not like.

HIS SPECIAL PLACE

Mother is all that is noble and fine And all that is right and good.

She richly deserves every sonnet sung To her glorious motherhood.

And when mother some fresh acclaim The whole wide world is glad,

But away down deep in every heart There is a special place for dad.

We may not shower him with praise

Nor mention his name in song, And sometimes it seems that we forget

The joyhe spreads as he goes along. But it does not mean that we do nowt know

The wonderful role that he has had. And away down deep in every heart There is a place that is just for Dad.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Volunteers Sought We are looking for volunteers to fill the following positions: 1. Baby News Correspondent When a new baby is born to a member of the congregation, the responsibility of the baby news

correspondent is to contact the family and get “vital statistics” and then write a short article for the newsletter. Talk to Margie if you would like to tackle this position.

2. Greeters, Lay Readers, Communion Assistants, Ushers and Sound System Operators. Our list of people willing to do these jobs keeps dwindling. Will you help? Sign up on the

attached “volunteer form” and drop them on Margie’s desk or put them in the offering plate.

Communions Communions for all confirmed members must be recorded in the parish register annually. If you do not commune on a regular basis, we ask that you fill out a communion record card (one per year is all we need) so we know you have communed. The cards are located in the racks on the back of the pews. Cards may be put in the offering plate or handed to an usher.

Memorabilia The following memorabilia items are still available for anyone interested in purchasing anything:

Wooden Miniatures of the Church - $10.00 Church Prints - $20.00

Blankets - $10.00 Christmas Cards - $10.00

12 cards per box feature a winter picture of the church

Talk to Bev Catherman if you have questions about, or would like to purchase, any of these items.

Informants Wanted We like to publish news about our members in the newsletter, but we need your help to do so. If you know of interesting information about any of our members (youth or adult), i.e. an award or recognition, a funny tale or exciting adventure, please let Margie know about it so we can include it in an issue of Christ’s United’s News & Views.

Do We Have Your E-Mail Address? If you have an e-mail address that you have never given to us or if it has changed, please fill out the following and drop it off on Margie’s desk or give her a call. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name_________________________________________________________________________ E-Mail Address_________________________________________ ________________________ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have a Favorite Hymn? Over the past few years, some of you have been requesting favorite hymns and gospel songs and for that we give many thanks. Because of U.S. copyright laws, we do not have permission to reproduce or copy many of our favorites. You may choose selections from the following hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) and With One Voice (WOV). We are also permitted to use hymns that are in the “Public Domain”. It’s all very complicated. So, keep your suggestions coming and the Worship and Music Committee will be happy to sort out and use all of your suggestions that copyright laws permit. Please put the title or first line of your song(s) on a piece of paper and give it to Margie, or any member of the Worship and Music Committee (Bev Catherman, Paula Christy, Gary Hackenberg, Judy Mecouch or Barry Spangler). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hymn Request

Fellowship Committee Request The fellowship committee would like input from the members of the congregation regarding what social/fellowship activities they would like to have. Building & Ground Needs Do you know of any physical problems (or potential problems) that should be addressed by our property committee? Your insight is important. Maybe you have seen something that no one else has noticed yet. You can talk to Pastor John, any council member or Margie if you know of something that needs attention, or fill out the following and put it on Margie’s desk or in the offering plate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Building & Ground Needs:

Prayer Chain

The Prayer Chain is a group of men and women of Christ’s United who pray for the concerns and requests of Christ’s United’s members and friends. Someone in need of prayer calls the church office and requests to be put on the Prayer Chain. Each member of the Prayer Chain then receives either a phone call or an email notifying them of a prayer request. The prayer chain member receiving the phone call then calls one other person and so on down the list. Those notified by email do not have to pass it on. Would you be willing to pray for someone in need? It is reassuring to know that you are supported by the prayers of others and not alone with your concern. If you would like to be a member of the Prayer Chain, fill out the following and put it in the offering plate or on Margie’s desk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAMP MOUNT LUTHER

Looking Ahead to June at Camp The summer camping session at Camp Mount Luther will be in full swing in June! This summer’s staff will arrive on June 3rd for their two weeks of training. On June 16th, the first campers for this year will arrive for Senior High X-Teen, a joint program of the camp and the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. The theme this year for X-Teen is “Beyond the Hunger Games.” They will be participating in a ten-day camp experience, culminating in a weekend of service work. On June 24, camp will welcome on-site Day Campers. This program is especially good for those kids who are not sure they want to be away from home overnight. More information on these programs is available by calling the camp office at 570-922-1587 or visiting www.campmountluther.org. There is still time to register for all these and other summer programs! This year’s theme at Mount Luther is “Faith Alive,” exploring the five faith practices of Bible study, worship, prayer, hospitality, and service. A new method of studying the Bible, called “GROW Time” will help campers Gather and Reflect On the Word throughout their day, culminating in an evening worship service. 50-Mile Bike Ride June 1

In honor of their 50th birthday, Camp Mount Luther is sponsoring a half-century bike ride on June 1, 2013. This is not a race so all speeds are welcome. Upper Susquehanna Synod Bishop Robert L. Driesen, a veteran cyclist, will be riding in the event, so come ride bike with the bishop! A website about the event is here: http://doughboytoironman.com/2013/01/28/camp-mount-luther-2013-charity-bike-ride/

There will be a course sweeper making sure that no one gets left behind. The ride will begin at the camp at 9:00 a.m. and follow a course of back roads to McEwensville, turning around at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, then along the river through Milton, across to Lewisburg, and back to the camp. You can see a map at http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/166174716. For riders who are not as ambitious to tackle a 50-mile ride, there will be a group leaving at 11:00 a.m. from Holy Spirit Church to do the second half of the course, so that all riders will end at the camp. That map is http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/166174716. Course aid stations will have water, food, and bathrooms. Vehicle support will also be circulating for emergencies. It is a completely open road course, so traffic laws must be obeyed, and safety is paramount. All riders are expected to wear helmets. You will need to sign a waiver the morning of the ride.

Page 14: CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS · This period will be followed by a Koinonia Kafe that will feature soup, sandwiches and dessert. FATHER/SON banquet scheduled Attention all fathers,

14

The cost for the ride is $25, which gets you an event T-shirt, any sponsor goodies they can collect, and the course support. In addition, they would like to encourage fundraising to the camp. For every additional $25 raised by a rider, he/she will get a ticket into a prize drawing to be held that day. To direct fundraising, either collect checks to be brought the day of the ride, or instruct your sponsors/donors to donate right on the camp’s website at http://www.campmountluther.org/giving/. In the special designation box, they should note “For Bike rider (your name here).”

For the ride itself, we have direct registration on the camp website at http://registration.campmountluther.org/bike/. For those who prefer the old-fashioned mail version, download and print this form to mail in: http://doughboytoironman.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/bike-ride-registration.pdf

Of course, they will need volunteers of various kinds, so if you or someone you know would not be interested in riding, but would like to help, Pastor Andrew Weaver, who is coordinating this event, can find them a job on June 1. And finally, anyone with a business that would like to be a sponsor for this event, contact Pastor Weaver at [email protected] or (570) 539-4612. You’ll get mentioned on the shirt for $100. In addition to cash donations to the camp, they need raffle prizes, food donations, and bag goodies.

Hike a Thon June 9

In honor of their 50th birthday, Camp Mount Luther is sponsoring a hike-a-thon for outdoor enthusiasts to come to camp to enjoy the outdoors. Hikers of all ages are welcome to join them for a fun afternoon of hiking, exploring God’s creation at CML, and fellowship. Hiking will be lead by Camp Mount Luther Staff and proceeds will benefit the Birthday Candle Project, aimed at retiring the debt of the Evergreen Center during the camp’s birthday year.

The Hike-A-Thon will begin on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., rain or shine. In order to prepare, they ask hikers to arrive at camp around 1:30 so that hiking can get underway at 2:00, after some brief devotions. This is a great event for campers, families, friends, congregation members, youth groups, pastors, anyone who likes to hike.

There will be a few options for hiking. The longest hike will be from Camp Mount Luther to Buffalo Gap, a 5-6 mile hike in the beautiful Bald Eagle State Forest. There will also be a shorter hike of about 3 miles along the camp’s Dandelion Trail. For the youngest hikers and their parents, they will have a camp tour hike, seeing the major spots in central camp.

Each adult hiker is asked to contribute $20 for their registration fee. Youth age 13-18 can register for $15, children 5-12 can register for $10, and children under 5 are free. Families can register for $50.

All registrants will receive a 2013 Camp Mount Luther T-Shirt. In addition, they would like to encourage fundraising to the camp. For every additional $10 raised by a hiker, he/she will get a ticket into a prize drawing to be held that day.

If you have questions, please call (570) 922-1587, or email [email protected]. Online registration will also soon be available on the camp’s website.

Page 15: CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS · This period will be followed by a Koinonia Kafe that will feature soup, sandwiches and dessert. FATHER/SON banquet scheduled Attention all fathers,

15

Hikers should bring hiking gear, including hiking boots (not new) or sneakers, water bottle, snacks, rain gear, sunscreen, a hat or cap, etc. Hikers do not need to pre-register, but an RSVP so we can prepare would be helpful.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION June 30 Camp Mount Luther will celebrate their 50th birthday with an open house, meal and worship service on June 30, the 50th anniversary of the camp’s dedication day. During the worship service, the camp’s first director, Rev. Theodore Schneider, will preach. Mark your calendars! More information will be shared as the event gets closer.

LUTHERAN DISASTER RESPONSE E-ALERT

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

Yesterday, a two-mile-wide tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., claiming many lives and leaving behind a devastating trail of destruction. Plaza Towers Elementary School stood right in the path of the storm's 166-200 mph winds. Many Oklahoma residents already were recovering from storms even before Monday's tornado hit -- hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed this weekend as 28 tornadoes touched down throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Illinois and Iowa. As strong winds and warm fronts continue to move across the nation, the threat for future tornado outbreaks is looming.

Your help is needed to bring hope to our sisters and brothers in need. Lutheran Disaster Response affiliates are already on the ground, assessing the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by the tornadoes. We already know it will be a long road to recovery, and your gifts are needed now to begin coordinating volunteers, rebuilding homes and offering spiritual and emotional care to those in need.

Please give now. Your gifts designated to “U.S. Tornadoes” through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely -- 100 percent -- to help survivors of tornadoes rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

Thank you for your gifts, your prayers and your partnership.

In service to Christ,

NOTES OF APPRECIATION “Volunteers are gold”. Volunteers are the most valuable commodities in ministry. Without them, nothing would get done in our churches. We are fortunate to have the kind of dedicated people that we do. Do you know anyone who should be given a pat on the back and a “Thank You” for the contributions they make in and around the church? Let Margie know.

THANK YOU TO… Everyone who helped with the Mother & Daughter banquet, the public sale stands and the refreshments for the pastor’s conference Everybody who helped in any way with the Chicken Barbeque. Revenue generated following expenses is $1,069.07 Those who choose, conduct, present and accompany the music that influences the spirit of reverence in our worship services. "THAT RAGGED OLD FLAG”

Written by Johnny Cash

I walked through a county courthouse square

On a park bench, an old man was sittin there.

I said, "Your courthouse is kinda run down,

He said, "No, it will do for our little town".

I said "your old flag pole kinda leaned a little bit,

And that's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it".

He said "have a seat", so I sat down,

He said, "is this your first visit to our little town"

I said, "I think it is"

He said "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of

"That Ragged Old Flag"

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,

When Washington took it across the Delaware.

It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it, writing

"Oh Say Can You See"

It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson

tugging at its seams.

It almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag,

But she waved on though.

It got cut with a sword in Chancellorsville,

Got cut again at Shiloh Hill.

There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,

And the south wind blew hard on

"That Ragged Old Flag"

On Flanders Field in World War I,

She took a bad hit from a Bertha Gun,

She turned blood red in World War II

She hung limp and low by the time that one was through,

She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent

by her Uncle Sam.

The Native Americans, The Black, Yellow and White

All shed red blood for the Stars and Stripes.

And here in her own good land,

She's been abused, burned, dishonored, denied and refused,

And the very government for which she stands

Has been scandalized throughout out the land.

And she's getting thread bare, and she's wearing kinda thin,

But she's in pretty good shape, for the shape she's in.

Cause she's been through the fire before

and she can take a whole lot more.

So we raise her up every morning

And we bring her down slow every night,

We don't let her touch the ground,

And we fold her up right.

On second thought

I do like to brag

Cause I'm mighty proud of

"That Ragged Old Flag"
