The simplest hand gestures change meaning from culture to culture.

A gesture that communicates good luck in Brazil is the equivalent of giving someone “The finger” in Colombia.

In culture that value age and seniority, longevity earns respect and increasing power and freedom.

For instance, in many Asian societies, the oldest employees hold the most powerful jobs, the most impressive titles, and greatest degree of freedom and decision-making authority. If a younger employee disagrees with one of these senior executives, the discussion is never conducted in public.

As with all diversity issues, the solution to age- related conflicts can be found in respecting one another and working toward common goals. As Virginia Byrd, a veteran career counselor from Encinitas, California, put it, "Its a real blessing to have different generations in our workplace. There is so much we can share, if we make the effort."
