SAINT CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH

Welcome to Saint Cecilia

2

OUR CHURCH IS THE PEOPLE. We have a beautiful

temple in which to worship and a wonderful pastor to set

the tone and lead us, but it is really the people that make

Saint Cecilia the vibrant and growing parish that it is.

We are the stewards of this wonderful place, following in

the footsteps of generations of parishioners who literally

built and then grew it into what we have today. There are

many who give their time, treasure and talent to ministries

throughout the parish. But we can always use more to help

spread the joy of the faith throughout the community.

Volunteer for things that interest you. Discover and grow

in your own giftedness. As stewards, God calls us to reflect,

not only on our talents discovered through our livelihoods,

but also on our other talents as well—whether they be music,

carpentry, organizing, coaching, teaching, gardening, paint-

ing, or communicating. Put your faith and love into action.

Build lasting friendships and become part of the family of

Saint Cecilia Parish.

CHRISTMAS 2015

Welcome to Saint CeciliaMERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE! May you all feel God’s presence during this Christmas. We are so blessed to celebrate the birth of Christ. God loves us so much He gave His Son to us. During this Christmas season, take the time to look back at all the blessings God has given you. Be grateful for all that you have, and make a commitment to worship Our Lord this year with zeal!

I hope you all receive the gift to you from our parish. The Holiness Revolution Book by Dan Dematte is a book that will challenge us. He’s asking us to think about how we are living the will of God. Here is a short excerpt from his book:

“The world is in dire need of change. People are hurting. People are turning to empty promises searching for answers. All along, we have the answer: Jesus. In Holiness Revolution, your eyes will be awakened to the need for change in this world. You will be challenged to live a life of radical discipleship that brings that change. It’s time to stop making excuses and start taking action. Only from God, only from the saints, does true revolution come. Will you join the revolution of holiness?”

Saint Cecilia provides many opportunities for prayer, study, and fellowship centered on Jesus Christ. Each faith formation activity is designed for you to experience the power of the Holy Spirit within our community.

This past year has brought many changes to our faith formation program as well as our staff. This past June, we said goodbye to our previous catechetical leader, Brendan Dudley, and in August, we were joyful to welcome Cody Egner as our new Director of Religious Education. Under the new leadership in our Faith Formation Department, we have invigorated nearly every aspect of faith formation here at St. Cecilia Parish. Our current programs have been reshaped, and we will be introducing multiple new programs to the parish, such as local pilgrimages, a parish pilgrimage to Rome, a series of films, and multiple new titles and topics for our Adult Faith Formation series.

Our RCIA group was reshaped and given the new name of CATHOLICISM 101: THE RCIA EXPERIENCE. This ministry has BOOMED over the past couple of months. Our total number of participants for the 2015-2016 year is over 40 people! All parishioners are invited to join these sessions. We meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00pm-8:30pm in the school cafeteria. No matter where you are on your faith journey, Catholicism 101 has something to offer everyone!

Our PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (PREP) started the 2015-2016 year on August 12. PREP meets on Sunday mornings from 8:30am-9:45am and follows the school calendar. This year, we have 3 classes: Kindergarten-1st Grade, 2nd-3rd Grade, and 4th-8th Grade. We have been covering multiple topics, such as the Holy Trinity, creation and the fall, the sacraments, the Church, and prayer. It is in this program that our 2nd Graders prepare for first Holy Communion and first Reconciliation as well as where our 7th and 8th Graders prepare for Confirmation. To register for this wonderful program, please visit our parish website and under Children’s Faith Formation, click PREP. From there, simply fill out the online form at the bottom of the page.

In August 2015, we introduced a dynamic bible study titled UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF THE BIBLE. This 8-week series featuring Jeff Cavins enabled parishioners to not only attempt to read the Sacred Scriptures, but to have an overarching understanding of Salvation History as is told in the biblical narrative. Over 50 people signed up for this study, which included a video lecture, small group discussions, and of course, a meal and an adult beverage or two.

We are excited to announce that our parish has subscribed to a dynamic new online platform called FORMED. Every parishioner will have 24/7 access to the best Catholic content on any device, including your computer, smartphone and tablet with Internet access. With FORMED, you’ll find video programs that explain the Catholic faith, explore the deepest meaning of marriage, receive bible studies on a variety of topics and access inspiring audio talks. And you’ll find presenters like Dr. Tim Gray,

Faith Formation at Saint Cecilia

Dr. Edward Sri, Dr. Mary Healey, Chris Stefanick, Dr. Scott Hahn, Bishop Robert Barron and a lot more. They’re all part of our parish subscription. It truly is the Catholic faith — on demand.

Here’s how easy it is to get FORMED: Go to www.FORMED.org. You should see the registration box for parishioners. Type in the parish code (YX2P22). Now set up a username and a password. Now you are set to use all the great programs on FORMED.org anytime by simply logging in.

As you can see, St. Cecilia Parish is offering many, many areas for study, prayer, and growth in our relationship with Jesus Christ. There is a program here for everyone, regardless of age. We personally invite each of you to take advantage of one or many of these faith formation opportunities. We are all called to bring Christ to the world. Let us support one another as we walk this

faith journey together so that we may truly let the light of Christ shine through our lives.

Let us praise the Lord and give Him thanks! – Mr. Cody Egner, Director of Religious Education

SAINT CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord … sing unto the Lord

with the harp … with trumpets make a joyful noise before

the Lord, the King. –Psalm 98

From the earliest of times, we have been encouraged to sing…sing to God. No other season of the Church year brings out the singer in all of us as does Christmas. It was St. Francis of Assisi who introduced the Christmas carol (along with the Nativity crèche), and from Italy Christmas carols quickly spread to Germany, France, Spain and England.

Silent NightPerhaps the best known Christmas carol is Silent Night, written

in 1818 by an Austrian assistant priest Joseph Mohr and the

church organist Franz Gruber. Whether it was because the

church organ was broken or because Fr. Mohr just loved the

guitar, the congregation listened as the choir sang Stille Nacht,

Heilige Nacht to the accompaniment of Fr. Mohr’s guitar for

the very first time at that midnight Mass in St. Nicholas Church

in Austria. Today, Silent Night is sung in more than 180 languages

by millions of people and is the most recorded song.

O Come All Ye Faithful(Adeste Fideles)This carol is attributed to John Francis Wade, a Catholic layman

and a music teacher residing in France, where he made his living

copying and selling music and by giving music lessons to children.

He combined the Latin text with a bit of music and published the

resulting hymn in his own 1751 publication of Cantus Diversi. But

the song’s popularity dates from a performance of Adeste Fideles at

the Portuguese Embassy Chapel in London, which so impressed

the Duke of Leeds that he had it arranged for choir and ensemble

for his Christmas celebration in 1795. A century later, Frederick

Oakley, an Anglican minister who converted to Catholicism, felt

that if Catholic congregations had good literary texts to sing, they

would sing well. He translated the Latin Adeste Fidelis into the

English version, O Come, All Ye Faithful. This carol is among the

most recognizable Christmas tunes in existence.

Minuit Chrétiens/Cantique de Noel (O Holy Night)This carol is among the most beautiful of all Christmas carols

and one of the most popular, with excellent lyrics (both French

and English) and a superb melody. The song was first sung at

the midnight Mass on Christmas Eve 1847 in Roquemaure,

France. However, the song was immediately attacked by the

Church authorities — not because of the nature or subject of

the song, but rather the attacks were based on the reputation of

the composer! He was Jewish; and his heritage was deemed to

be incompatible with the composition of a Christian religious

song. One French bishop denounced the song for its “lack of

musical taste and total absence of the spirit of religion.” In

1855, John Sullivan Dwight (1813-1893), a Unitarian minister,

American music critic and journalist, discovered the song and

was deeply moved by its message. He freely translated Minuit

Chrétiens and published it in his Journal of Music as O Holy

Night. Dwight’s strong abolitionist views influenced aspects of

his translation, including Chains shall He break, for the slave is

our brother, And in His name all oppression shall cease. Known

for its difficulty to be sung well, the carol is considered the pre-

mier of Christmas solos.

Joy to the WorldIsaac Watts — Father of English Hymnody — is credited with

the words to this carol based on Psalm 98. A hundred years later,

American composer and music educator Lowell Mason em-

barked on the task of producing a hymnal whose tunes would be

drawn from the work of European classical composers such as

Haydn and Mozart. Published in 1822 by the Handel and Haydn

Society of Boston, Mason’s hymnal turned out to be a great suc-

cess. Although Joy to the World is often attributed to Handel,

Handel did not compose the carol. One might say that Mason

was more “inspired” and “borrowed” a few musical ideas from

Handel’s Messiah; however nowhere in the Messiah will you find

the entire musical composition of Joy to the World.

This is just a bit of trivia of how these Christmas treasures have come to us. We are encouraged to take that spirit of Christmas into our daily lives and…make a joyful noise. God loves to hear it!

We encourage our parishioners and friends to re-member St. Cecilia Parish by including it in their estate plan. A bequest to St. Cecilia will continue your financial support of the parish for many years after you have joined the communion of saints in heaven. Help keep St. Cecilia Church this beautiful inspiration for the Oakley community and beyond.

the School Becomes a Bridge to the Faith A point of pride for the school spanning over the last year has been the baptism and

been students.

past November 15, eleven more children were baptized at the 10AM Sunday Mass at

St. Cecilia. On December 12, the Feast of Our lady of Guadalupe, four additional

children were baptized.

At the easter Vigil, two of our 7th grade students, Maddy Bolin and Kyla Martin,

both of whom had been part of rCiA, received the three Sacraments of initiation:

Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.

these conversions and baptisms are reason to celebrate and be joyful. During

the November 15 Mass, Father Jamie spoke of the school and how it was a vehicle

for bringing families back to the faith. “At the school, we not only teach our children

academics, but more importantly, we form them in the faith. there is nothing more

important than that.”

Capital improvements to the School ContinueSt. Cecilia School experienced an extensive renovation in 2015, thanks to your generous support! the cafeteria saw its first major over-haul in over 50 years, and two classrooms were completely updated.

Our Buildings and Grounds Committee, along with the parish administration, started working on a plan to renovate the school cafeteria in late 2014. the idea was to create a multipurpose space that would be beneficial to the school, as well as the parish in general. We contracted with design firm KZF to redesign this 100-year-old space.

in late spring the plan was really starting to take shape, and renovations started on June 1st with the removal of the asbestos ceiling and steam pipe insulation. the entire space is now free of asbestos, which will make future repairs/improvements much easier. Schu-macher Dugan also began working to repair the crumbling foundation on the Fifth third side of the building. the area was excavated, and the foundation was waterproofed. A planter and green space were added alongside the building, which will keep the weight of cars off of the foundation and also give the entrance a more inviting feel.

in July, work got underway on the interior of the cafeteria. the majority of the interior work was framing and drywall. A wall was added to create a serving line that allows the kitchen to be separated from the rest of the space. We also added a hallway that separates the restrooms from the open space and constructed a place for a future ADA restroom. Steel beams and soffits were installed for the folding partitions that now divide the room into three separate spaces for classes and meetings. HVAC ducts were also added during this time for future air-conditioning.

August was a super busy month as we were getting close to the start of school. Drywall was being finished, leD lighting was in-stalled, doors were hung and new Gilkey windows were installed allowing for more natural light. A state-of-the art-technology system was also installed. We now have three screens and projectors mounted in the ceiling that operate at the push of a button! they can be used in the separate spaces when the room is divided off or in theater mode, utilizing all three at the same time!

in October the folding partitions were installed, which completed the project. it is truly a beautiful space that can be used indepen-dently or as three separate meeting spaces/classrooms. We will soon explore the second phase, which is handicap accessibility and some kitchen/restroom improvements. plans are also underway to install air-conditioning in the space.

two classrooms were also renovated during the summer, grades 2 and 7. Asbestos was removed, and the rooms received new flooring, ceilings, leD lighting and cabinetry/furniture. the 7th-grade classroom also received a new set of windows that were donated by Gilkey!

to date, all four classrooms in the primary side have been completely renovated, along with the 7th-grade room in the original building. this leaves eight classrooms and six restrooms left for renovation. plans are underway for at least one more classroom in the summer of 2016.

these renovations would not be possible without the support of you, the parishioner, and we thank you for your continued generosity. if you have not contributed to the campaign and would like to do so, please contact Bob Kellison at 513-871-5757, ext. 208, or email [email protected].
