LETTER TO THE EDITOR

About this time two winters ago, at a mid-December social gathering, I wished a very progressive, always politically correct, actor friend of mine

a very sincere (OK, as sincere as I can muster with this fellow) “Merry Christmas.” To this he shot back in full projected baritone tutorial voice, “No, Tony. It’s Happy Holidays!” A couple of others within earshot chuckled. I felt exposed, like the emperor caught without his clothes. It seems I had mentioned the word that dare not be mentioned. Truthfully, the man’s blunt public castigation stunned

A ‘Politically Correct’ –masme. I guess my face showed it. I suppose in an effort to help me save face, the man’s wife (God bless her, she has a pretty good heart) interjected, “It’s OK to say Merry, though, Tony.” I should have had the guts to speak up and defend CHRISTmas as the heart of Christmas. I had a moment. I could have risen to Christmas’s defense. I was respected in this group, and others would have listened, perhaps even stood with me. But not wishing to trigger a scene or debate, I wimped out. The ironic thing was that I had always viewed the phrase “Merry Christmas” as the sharing of a blessing, not a “naughty” unmentionable. But in the moment of my testing, I punted. I surrendered Christmas to politically correct. As so often happens when you sell you beliefs short, I tried to sweep my shortfall under the delete-memory carpet. I left that evening advising myself, “Ah, forget it. It was just an isolated event. Don’t overreact.” I even tried to make light of it, picturing myself going around

this Yuletide (Yuletide is still OK to say, isn’t it?) season, warmly greeting everyone with a clipped cheerful “Merry!”: “Merry to you, Jim,” and, “Sally, a merry!” It seemed a bit odd, but hey, maybe it better fits our life “on the run.” So, get with it, Tony. But today, two years later, in an internet search, the memory carpet was thrown back. And what I saw bothered me more than I can mention. I happened to get on the official Postal Service website. Since I was there, I decided to check out what new stamps had been issued for this season. To my shock, the very first stamp that popped up was a blaring red one across which was written just one word. You guessed it. “MERRY!” That’s it. CHRISTMAS had finally been deleted. Who needs it? For one, I guess I do. I guess I realized MERRY for all its “fa-la-la,” was just not enough. It ran hollow. I need, my spirit NEEDS, the second word, the anchor word, without which merry falls short of its promise. The MERRY stamp is insufficient postage./s/ Anthony de la TorreOracle

Supervisor Pete Rios delivered a check for $50,000 to the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC), on behalf of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors. According to its website, the CCEDC is made up of the communities of the Copper Corridor from Oracle to Superior, Arizona. Its mission is to attract, create and retain quality jobs and businesses; to support community leadership and community events; to solicit funds and other resources to advance economic development in eastern Pinal and southern Gila counties, Arizona. In a post online the coalition states, “Your funding has helped us to improve the economic resilience of our region by: increasing tourism promotion, developing our regional food hub, leadership development and assisting low income residents access federal funding for home repairs.” A vast majority of the Copper Corridor is within Pinal County and has over 2,000 square miles and countless businesses. “This organization has helped the Copper Corridor grow small individual businesses and has worked hard to bring ecotourism to the eastern end of the county. They help greatly in filling the infrastructure gap the exists,” said Supervisor Pete Rios. The Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition will continue its mission and has already set goals for the 2020 calendar year.

Community, Friendship & Faith

Every human is a unique expression of the species. We each have our own combination of molecules that are

influenced by almost limitless variables including DNA, environmental interactions (e.g. the food we eat, the air we breathe, the medications we take, infections we get, radiation from all kinds of sources, weather, etc., etc.), psychological interactions, sociological interactions. The list goes on and on. As unique individuals we interact with the world uniquely. We respond to invasions from harmful entities uniquely. We respond to medications uniquely. This is why it is imperative that health care professionals be holistic (wholistic) in their approach. We must consider all of the factors that make up the individual in front of us. We consider the whole being as it interacts with its surroundings and with itself (e.g. what goes on in the gut is influenced

by what goes on elsewhere in the body and visa versa). And, we consider, as health care providers, that what we recommend will have a different effect on one person versus another…sometimes dramatically. It is known, for example, that the functioning of the liver can vary dramatically from one individual to the next. One person’s liver can metabolize ingested substances 100 times faster than another. What this translates into is that a fast metabolizer will break down ingested toxins quickly and therefore neutralize its effect quicker than a slow metabolizer. Medicines are basically toxins. They are dosed for the “average” person. If a person is a fast metabolizer, they will neutralize the drug very quickly and require more dosing to achieve the desired effect. A slow metabolizer may experience a more heightened effect (“cheap drunk”) which can be dangerous.

This scenario plays out with every aspect of the human condition. It identifies each person’s bio-individuality. This example of the metabolic rate of the liver really should be as evident to a person as the differences in hair color or the differences in height or the differences in sight. Speaking of sight…if an individual has difficulty seeing perfectly, it is an opportunity to determine the reason. For instance, it could be straight forward, like a genetic condition. Or, it could be the result of overexposure to harsh light. Or, it could be the result of years of nutritional deficiency. It is the job of the health professional to ascertain the cause in order to determine if it is alterable. It is based on bio-individuality. This is especially evident with cancer treatment. It is well recognized that what works for one person may not work for another, even with the “same” diagnosis. That is because the human body is extremely

complex. There are many, many treatment options that work 100% of the time in a petrie dish. However, when introduced into the complexity of a human body, that percentage of success commonly drops to 20. Continued on page 16

MILA BESICHContinued from page 3

Dec. 18, 2019, “a day which will live in infamy”, at least according to Representative Mike Kelly. Comparing the impeachment to the attack on Pearl

Harbor, where 2,400 Americans died in a sneak attack which led to America’s entry into World War II is a bit of a stretch even for a demented imagination. Even if Trump is removed from office, we will not be laying wreaths in front of Trump Tower every year or remembering the day with parades and ceremonies. Although if he is removed from office, there will be millions of Americans dancing in the streets! As delusional as Kelly’s remarks were, the words spoken by Republican Representative Barry Loudermilk were even more bizarre. He compared the impeachment of Trump to the trial of Jesus Christ by Pontius Pilate saying that Jesus was given more rights at his trial than Congress gave Trump and that he was at least allowed to face his accusers. There are some members of the Trumpian Cult that may believe Trump is the second coming or at least chosen as President by God just as there are some Democrats that would like to see Trump flogged on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and nailed to his tanning bed. Loudermilk’s comments were inaccurate and may even be blasphemous. Let’s not forget that Trump was invited to testify and even tweeted that he was seriously considering it. Trump has been withholding evidence and stonewalling the impeachment hearings from the start just like he did the Mueller investigation. Let us hope that the documents are

Impeachmententered into evidence and witnesses who have refused to testify are called forward and compelled to. If a fair trial is held in the Senate (play loud laugh track here), at least the American people can hear all the evidence and make up their own minds. Whether he is removed from office or not, Trump’s impeachment will impact the 2020 election and his legacy. Author’s Note: I have been given the opportunity to express my opinion and viewpoints on politics, national, state, and local issues as well as life in general. I hope to inform you as well as entertain you, make you smile or make you mad. I will use humor, sarcasm and occasionally anger to express my views. My intention is to hold politicians accountable sometimes bringing some heat on them and if my views make you angry or hot, remember that like my humor, it is a dry heat. These opinions are entirely my own and do not reflect the views of Copper Area News Publishers.
