Christmas in Switzerland

History
Christmas in Switzerland is celebrated in December 24 & 25. Advent, the period of preparation for the Birth of Jesus is very important to Swiss People. In Advent, a popular tradition is the advent wreath , it’s a green spruce garland that has 4 candles on it , one for each Sunday in advent.

On Christmas Eve , members of the family gather up to eat a sumptuous Christmas Dinner . They eat different kinds of food like:
• Turkey
• Swedish Ham
• German Carp
• Roasted Goose
• Fondue ( for dessert )

Christmas Traditions
• They gather around Christmas Tree and sing songs related to Christmas.
• Some people read the passage concerning the Birth of Jesus From the Holy Bible.
• Instead of buying a tree, Swiss People go hike through the forest in quest to find and cut a perfect Christmas Tree.
• Children in Catholic Areas believe “Kristkindl” a Saint will bring them presents.
• Other Kids believe that St. Nicholas is the gift bringer. He is believed to appear on Dec. 6 ( St. Nicholas Day) and fill the shoes or boots of kids (kept out at night) with fruits, nuts and sweets.
