In August 2006 I was diagnosed with MND, and as many of you will know my life was blown apart. I could not have coped with things without the support of the Cheshire Branch of the Association. However in the middle of 2007 I was diagnosed with a hernia and opted for surgery at the Countess of Chester Hospital as my MND consultant was based there, as were my records. After discharge and suffering severe discomfort for some time I was an emergency admission to hospital and catheterised. Subsequent to this I suffered from depression, panic attacks, hallucinations, in addition to catheter problems and infections for several weeks. Eventually an out of hours GP prescribed an alternative medication following which I was able to sleep in bed and become a little calmer. In January 2008 the MND Specialist Nurse asked my GP to refer me to St Lukes Hospice and it was arranged for me to visit and see their facilities. I was obviously horrified and very reluctantly agreed to go on the visit. I went with my wife and was frightened to think I was visiting an institution and broke down. The nurse in charge of the day care calmed me down and said that I was not the first person to do that and asked me to give them a try. The following week I was picked up by a volunteer driver who put me at ease although I was still apprehensive. On arrival I met some of the other day care patients and a number of volunteer carers who made me most welcome. There were a number of dedicated staff there who were wearing normal clothes as well as therapists and people who can do hairdressing, chiropody, manicure, hand waxing, and painting etc. My dedicated nurse and the painting lady threatened to have me painting within 2 weeks. Perhaps it took a little longer than that but I agreed to give it a go. I have now done 6 paintings and now get a little uptight when there is anything happening to prevent it. The staff always have time for you and always have time to listen to your problems and offer advice and support if needed. All needs, no matter how large or small are catered for. Not only do St Luke care for me as a patient they also give support and therapy to wives and carers. I still have problems and only console myself knowing that I can go to St Lukes as long as they will have me, but my attendance is subject to regular reviews. St Lukes has given me back my sanity. I do not know where I would be without them. Woe betides any one who tries to make an appointment for me on St Lukes day.

A thank you from Christine and her husbandA thank you from Christine and her husbandA thank you from Christine and her husbandA thank you from Christine and her husband Whilst enjoying the Strawberry Evening, we were fortunate to win the bid for “Tea at Nunsmere Hall”. We were treated like Royalty, mostly due to the fact that Joan Park had travelled there especially the day before. Joan had told the staff that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and had left a beautifully versed card for us. After lovely tea, sandwiches, cakes, scones and cream, we were given complimentary champagne. Following that we were given a tour of this beautiful hotel. Altogether, it was a fabulous afternoon, and a memorable anniversary.

It was gratefully received by local campaigner Joan Park. She said: "Motor Neurone Disease is dreadful, both for those who suffer from it and their carers. This generous donation will help fund specialist equipment, such as stair-lifts, bathroom equipment and tools to help communication where people have lost the ability to speak. It will all be used for local people. It is through such donations that we can help the people of Cheshire to be as independent as possible for as long as possible." Rotary club president John Meadows said: "The club is delighted to be able to support this extremely worthwhile local charity."

by Frank Caseyby Frank Caseyby Frank Caseyby Frank Casey Continuing their tradition of supporting local charities, the Ellesmere Port Music Society held a Christmas Carol Concert at the Ellesmere Port Civic Hall on Saturday the 13th December. Some 90 members of the Ellesmere chorus were supported by The Metropolitan Brass Quintet and Christleton High School Choir. Leigh Stanley was the MC, introducing songs for both the choirs, with frequent opportunities for the audience to join in with well known songs. The members of the Metropolitan Brass Band were also given several opportunities to show off their prowess, which was very much appreciated by all. The evening was a great success and enjoyed by everyone. A Donation from the proceeds of the Concert was made to Fighting Motor Neurone Disease at the interval The Chairman, David Price of the Ellesmere Port Music Society presented me with their donation, a cheque for £500. I was delighted to be accompanied by Ms Marion Chadwick, a Branch Committee Member.

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.

The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.

When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour.

Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you £800 to

drop that towel.'

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds,

Bob hands her £800 and leaves.

The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.

When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks,

'Who was that?'

'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies.

'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the £800 he owes me?'

New stem cell clinNew stem cell clinNew stem cell clinNew stem cell clinicicicic opens opens opens opens

OVER the last few months we have become aware of a new stem cell clinic that has opened in Cologne, called 'X-Cell' that is offering stem cell treatments to people with MND. Currently there is no scientific basis for how this treatment may help motor neurones affected by MND on a cellular level, and thus no evidence for how it may help people with MND. In addition, the side effects of receiving a stem cell treatment are unknown. Thus the treatment offered in Cologne is unproven. We would encourage anyone with MND who is considering embarking on an unproven treatment to discuss all the implications with their neurologist before making a decision. More information is available in our Research Information Sheet U. If you would like to talk this over with someone, please contact the Research Development team on 01604 611 880 or alternatively by email at research @ mndassociation.org.

Right care, Right dealRight care, Right dealRight care, Right dealRight care, Right deal

'RIGHT care Right deal' is a new joint national campaign launched to build public awareness and support for brave and innovative solutions for the social care system. Right Care Right Deal comprises a group of charities; Help the Aged, Carers UK and Counsel + Care. These three charities are working with older people, their families and carers to urge the Government to renew its vision for the future of social care in England. They are calling for a system that:

enables people to assess their own needs and to choose the right support; is better funded, sustainable and more efficient; supports families and carers as an integral part of the system; reaches more people, earlier; offers individuals a fair, simple and consistent deal; and is easy to understand, access and use.

The Right care Right deal coalition wants a future where people can live their lives their way. The Government has now called for a wide ranging debate on the future of care. Add your voice and show that social care really is everybody's business. Please get involved with the campaign by logging on to the Right care, Right deal website and complete an email that will be sent to your MP, to forward to Gordon Brown. Unfortunately since the last newsletter in October the Branch has received resignations from Lesley Allen, and David Mansfield, and we are sure that

everyone wishes them all the best in the

future.

Lesley, as everyone knows was an

Association Visitor, she was also an active

committee member. But due to business

pressures found that the time she could spend on Branch

matters was beginning to be compromised. She had worked tirelessly for the Branch for approximately 2½ years and will be missed by everyone.

David joined the

committee in April this year as Treasurer, but found that along with his other commitments could not devote as much time to the Branch as he would

have liked.
