If you want to connect with your customers on social media, you need to know who you’re talking to. When you know who your customer is, you are better equipped to communicate with them and highlight how your product or service can help them.

If you don’t already know your target market, send out a survey and/or do a little investigating of your current followers to learn as much about them as you can. And if you don’t have any followers yet, I want you to dream up who you want your ideal customer to be. Remember: Your target market is not only the group of people who want what you have to offer, but they’re also willing to pay the price you charge.

When you know who you’re marketing to, you’re ready to come up with what to say.

The most important thing to remember is that your audience doesn’t want to be sold to. If everything you post on social media is a promotion or a call to action, you will lose your followers. Always give more than you ask. You can do that by creating and sharing valuable content.

You invest in your followers by providing free content that entertains, inspires, challenges, connects, teaches, helps or informs. You want your posts to do something for your followers. That’s the only reason they’ll stop their scrolling and pay attention to your post.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF CONTENT YOU CAN CREATE:• Polls/quizzes• Tips/hacks/tricks• Inspirational quotes and challenges• Blogs • Videos (recorded or live)• Articles• Photos• Infographics• Downloadable PDFs

We’ve all seen the beautifully styled pictures on Instagram that look like a professional graphic designer put together. Can I let you in on a little secret? Creating beautiful images for your social media accounts is a lot easier than it looks—and you can do it yourself!

HERE ARE THREE WAYS YOU CAN TAKE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA IMAGES AND GRAPHICS TO THE NEXT LEVEL ON YOUR OWN:

1. Use natural lighting. It’s always best to take your photos using lots of natural light. You want your photos to look bright and inviting. If you’re in a pinch and can’t take your own photos, utilize stock images or create graphics from websites like Canva, Word Swag, Over, Shutterstock and Unsplash. Just make sure you pay any fees and choose images that look the least like stock photos!

2. Style the photo. Look around your home for other items that can complement what you’re photographing. Maybe you include your cup of coffee, a cute notebook on your desk or some colorful flowers. Play around with the placement until you find a styling you like. Here are three examples:

3. Edit your photo. Great editing tools like VSCO, A Color Story or Lightroom can transform your images and make them look like they were taken with a fancy camera. Play around with different tools and filters until you find one that aligns best with the look, tone and feel of your business. For help with this, check out: Creating a Mood Board with Tim Newton.

PRODUCING GREAT PHOTOS AND CAPTIONS

CAPTIONS WILL COMPLEMENT YOUR IMAGES. TRY THESE THREE TIPS TO WRITE STRONGER CAPTIONS:

1. Establish your voice. Your captions should sound like you and the audience you want to attract. If you describe your brand as casual and down-to-earth, don’t use big, fancy words! Remember that persona you created? Write for that person.

2. Experiment with length. Depending on the post, the length of your captions can vary. Experiment with both long and short captions, and take notice of which your audience prefers.

3. Examine and edit. Read your post three times before you publish. You want to check for typos and voice, make sure you’ve linked to relevant content, and tag any accounts you mention.

Day 3

Practice taking photos today. Try different techniques in styling and editing to discover what works best for your brand. I also want you to start a collection of inspirational quotes you can create into graphics using one of the apps mentioned above. Save these on your computer where you can access them for future posts.

Day 4Automation is one of most important things you can do in your business. It gives you more time in the day to focus on other areas.

FOLLOW THESE THREE STEPS TO START AUTOMATING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS:

Step 1: Organize Your ContentGrab the brainstorm list you created on Day 2 and then divide that list into two sections:

1. Content from others you’re going to share (and remember to gather all the links so you can give them proper credit)2. Content you’re going to create yourself

Step 2: Batch Your ContentTake the list of content you want to create and schedule enough time to do it at once. This is what batching work looks like—doing all the work at the same time. So instead of creating one piece of content each day, you’ll dedicate a few hours or one full day to get a month’s worth done. Remember, a month’s worth of content doesn’t mean you’re creating content for every day of the month. You might decide to post once a week or three times a week. That is totally up to you. Just make sure you can be consistent with whatever frequency you decide to use.

Step 3: Schedule Your ContentThis is the easiest part! Find one hour every week or month to organize your content plan and schedule it. Some of my favorite scheduling apps are:

1. Buffer: Includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn2. Hootsuite: Includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube3. Later: Includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest

It does take planning to create this much content and schedule it in one sitting. But you’ll be glad you did it when your posts go live while you’re having dinner with your family or working on a different area of your business. This is by far the best way to have a consistent presence on social media without having to work on it every single day.

AUTOMATING YOUR WORK

ACTION STEP: Print out the social media content calendar on the following page. Use it to organize whichcontent you want to share on what days. Once you have a plan in place, get it scheduled!

Interacting with your fans is an important part of creating trust with your social media following. No matter how big your audience, how great your content, how beautiful your photos, or how clever your captions, if you don’t take time to engage with your followers, your platforms are not going to grow.

Remember, social media is all about being social! People use these platforms to connect with others who are like them and gain a sense of belonging. That’s why you need to interact, ask questions, respond to direct messages and comments, and get to know the people who are following you.

This is how you build RAVING fans!

HERE ARE SOME FAST TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED: 1. Use your downtime. Whenever you have a few minutes to spare—like in between calls or during nap time—respond to comments, questions and direct messages. The more you engage with your followers, the more they’ll trust you.

2. Share their posts. When your fans post positive photos, comments or stories about you and your business, share it on your platform! Take a screenshot and post it or turn it into a cool graphic. It might feel braggy, but these are reviews from happy customers that you’ve earned. Plus, that fan will love that you acknowledged their post! It’s a win-win.

3. Surprise and delight. Find ways to super-serve your fans. Send coupons to them through direct messages, praise and encourage them publicly, or give them gifts for no reason. The goal is to let your fans know how much you appreciate them.
