The Strive is breaking ground with a fiery, infectious spin on today’s rock/pop vibe that simply must be heard. The band’s standalone singles “Sleepless,” “Bury Me Under,” and “Kingdom” are a testament to their unstoppable edge, progress, and vibrant energy. They have performed on bills with Fall Out Boy, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Neon Trees, and Yellowcard and have been featured on Warped Tour and the Red, White, and Boom Pop Music Festival (Mix 93.3.) The Strive has produced over 16,000 YouTube subscribers, 1.5 million views, and 20k+ Twitter followers.

News from Institutional AdvancementStaff News

We are sad to announce the resignation of Brandi Whitworth, data entry clerk for the Office of Institutional Advancement. Brandi resigned effective Tuesday, January 26, to set out on an adventure to Georgia. Brandi is a 1995 Cottey alumna who started working at the College in August 2013. We wish her well and will announce plans to fill the position at a later date. Thank you, Brandi, for your dedication and service to Cottey. We wish you only the best on your exciting new adventure.

We are also pleased to announce that Sherri Taylor has accepted the position of Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Sherri brings to the position experience in annual gifts and major gifts, donor acquisition and retention, capital campaign design and implementation, project management, etc. She worked with Cottey in the early stages of the capital campaign, so she comes with knowledge of and love for our institution. We welcome Sherri and look forward to having her on campus. She will start her position as of February 15. You can find her résumé as part of Dr. Weitzel's email sent on Tuesday, January 26.

Special Gift to the College

Michael Richardson, director of dining services, recently delivered

a $1,000 gift to Cottey College from Sysco Kansas City, Inc. This

is Sysco's first donation to the College. The company has been a food distributor to the College for more than 20 years. Joe Martines,

president of Sysco is the father of a daughter -- he has been impressed

by the nurturing, supportive environment that we provide our

students. Michael and Shawn Damm, regional sales manager

for Sysco, visited with Carrie Dreyer, administrative secretary

for Institutional Advancement, and talked about the various ways of supporting scholarship needs of Cottey College students. Sysco decided to add $1,000 to the Michael Richardson-The Chef's Life Scholarship. Michael has been

working on establishing his scholarship for a few years and it is nearing the minimum requirement of $10,000, to be a fully-endowed permanent scholarship. Once the Michael Richardson-The Chef's Life Scholarship is established it will provide a scholarship to a needy student each year. Carrie, Michael, and Kristine Fulton (all pictured), assistant vice

president for Institutional Advancement, celebrate Sysco's generous gift to Cottey College.

The Cottey Department of Theater, in cooperation with the Serenbetz Institute for Women's Leadership, Social Responsibility, and Global Awareness, is pleased to host Dr. Shelly Cline who will present a lecture on “Gendering in the Holocaust” on Friday, February 5, at 6 p.m. in the Missouri Recital Hall. The lecture is free and no tickets are required.

Dr. Shelly Cline has a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas where her research focused on the experience of the female perpetrators of the Holocaust. Dr. Cline is the public historian at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education (MCHE) in Overland Park, Kansas. Before joining the staff at MCHE, Dr. Cline taught courses at the University of Kansas and the Kansas City Art Institute, offering and developing courses on Western Civilization, Anti-Semitism, Gendering the Holocaust and Gender Literacy. Dr. Cline has spent some time at a few concentration camps including staying at Ravensbruck, the only all-female concentration camp north of Germany.

A reception with light refreshments will be provided in the lobby following the presentation.

Professor Laura Chaney invited Dr. Cline to give this address in coordination with the College play, Who Will Carry the Word?, to be performed at Cottey on Friday and Saturday, February 19 and 20, at the Center for the Arts. Who Will Carry the Word? is Charlotte Delbo’s story of members of the French Resistance who struggle to survive in Auschwitz.

Staff NewsJustin Mays, assistant director of administrative computing services, and Keith Spencer, director of administrative computing services, recently attended the Cybersecurity Incident Response Workshop at MOREnet headquarters in Columbia, Missouri. Workshop presenters included representatives from a number of Missouri secondary and higher-ed institutions, the Missouri State Auditor's Office, MO Cybercrime Task Force, Infraguard, Missouri School Board Association, and the FBI.

Cottey was well represented at the recent CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) District VI annual conference held January 23-26, 2016, in Kansas City, Missouri. Tracy Hass Cordova and Kirsten Bureman represented the alumnae relations and annual fund office while Carla Farmer and Steve Reed represented marketing and strategic communication. Tracy and Kirsten attended the new professionals workshop on Saturday, and then attended individual sessions in annual fund, alumni relations, and development over the next two-and-a-half days. Carla and Steve attended sessions in communications and marketing and Carla added a few in development as well. Steve was on the planning committee for this conference and served as the communications and marketing track chair. He was responsible for securing all of the presenters in that particular track.

CASE is a professional association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas. CASE helps its members build stronger relationships with their alumni and donors, raise funds for campus projects, produce recruitment materials, market their institutions to prospective students, diversify the profession, and foster public support of education.

Track & Field

RecycLing Reminder

Due to conflicts with course schedules, SAVE will be recycling at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons this semester. Please remember to help lighten the load they haul to the Recycling Center each week by taking your broken-down cardboard boxes to the dumpsters for cardboard behind Robertson Hall and across the street from the rear of the FAB, where there is also a dumpster for mixed paper. Rinsing your plastics, tearing down your cardboard, and properly separating your recyclables makes the work these young women do much more feasible in the limited amount of time available each week.

Also, we need someone who is licensed to drive a college van to help out with recycling at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 6. If you would like to help out or have any questions, please contact Susan Thornton at sthornton@cottey.edu or

From the CWLField Trip: Activists Then and Now

Dr. Brenda Ross, Dr. Selena Kohel, and Denise Carrick Hedges accompanied students to the "Activists Then and Now" panel discussion at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Fine Art on Thursday, January 14. The panelists spoke about their involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and current events at MU and Ferguson. The panel discussion was a sold out event and was extremely well received.

Panelists: Michael Patton, retired secondary school teacher, retired correctional facility case manager and life-long social activist; Joanne Collins, a former City Council member who has held presidential, gubernatorial, regional, county and local appointments and is an advocate for human rights, environmental justice, sustainability and voting rights; Dr. Delia C. Gillis, professor of history and director, Center of Africana Studies, University of Central Missouri; Bradley Rayford, an award-winning, Saint Louis-based independent photojournalist and eyewitness to events in Ferguson, Missouri.

February! If you do not have time to work out on Tuesday at this

time, you can attend the session in normal work attire.

• CIZE: Mondays & Wednesdays @ 5:20 p.m. in the Hinkhouse small dance studio. Next week’s lesson is

37 minutes. There are three weeks left in the program so come and Cize It Up!

• YoGA: Thursdays @ 5:20 p.m. in the new building (RFAB), Studio 152. Employees who have their own

yoga mats are encouraged to bring them! Yoga will continue through February 25 with Jo Byrnes as our

instructor.

The Movin' and losin' Corporate Challenge

The Movin' and losin' Corporate Challenge is back again this year,

sponsored by Healthy Nevada. The Challenge will run from February 15- May 9, 2016, this year. There is a new tracking system this year,

as we will not be using the 100 Missouri Miles used previously. If you

would like to participate this spring in either part of the challenge

to exercise (Movin’) or the weight loss (Losin’), please send Karen

an email (kpolon@cottey.edu) and she will get you entered into the

competition as a member of the Cottey team!

Nutrition Tips

Hopefully from the last couple of week’s nutrition tips you are now eating a little more slowly, really tasting

food and passing on the fast food. This week’s tip is to try and eat until you are 80% full. Most people

continue eating until they “feel” full. In reality there is still more food heading to the stomach at that time and

many people ultimately feel too full or “stuffed” after another 10-15 minutes. If you stop when you are 80%

full you are less likely to experience indigestion and that stuffed feeling. This also means you are consuming

fewer calories which over time should result in fat and weight loss. So this week, listen to your body and aim

for an 80% full feeling. It will take some work to understand what your body is telling you so be patient with

yourself!
