It is difficult to follow its career from this point on because for some reason or other, the management stopped advertising in the “Stratford Express”. Why they should have done so is a mystery. One would have thought that the last place to stop advertising would have been the local paper; it is all the more mysterious because their other theatre, the Borough, maintained their advertisements throughout this period. However, some issues of the “Stage” at the end of 1927 and the beginning 1928, contain isolated references to revues like “Cranky”, “Home Comforts”, “Monkey Gland” and “What’ll I Do?” Although there are many weeks when the Royal is not mentioned in the columns of the “Stage”, it must be presumed that the Theatre was open for quite long periods of time. There can be little doubt, however, that the Royal must have been further hit by the coming of the ‘talkies’ in 1927, as was the case with most other theatres at that time. Perhaps, (and this is only conjecture) the management would have liked to turn the Royal into a cinema. They certainly thought it was the obvious thing to do with the Borough Theatre (which became the Rex Cinema in 1933). There were, of course, differences in the case of the Borough because it had for many years shown films on Sunday evenings, and was therefore already equipped with projector and screen. It would be nice to think that there was nostalgia behind the decision not to convert the Royal, because, after all, it had been the first theatre in Stratford. The truth is probably harsher. The Royal was older, it was much smaller and would have been less easy to adapt. It was also in a worse position than the Borough and this was probably the deciding factor. Advertisements for the Royal started reappearing in the Stratford Express in March 1932 when “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was billed. During the succeeding eight weeks the advertisements appeared regularly. They were all for the melodramas and included many of the old faithfuls like “The Shaughraun”, “The Colleen Bawn” and “A London Actress” On 21 May they stopped abruptly and this time it is fairly certain that the theatre closed because the next advertisement to appear is headed “Re-opening” 1932 26 March - 2 April Uncle Tom’s Cabin 4 - 7 April The Victim 8 - 9 April The Sleigh Bells 11 - 14 April The Shaughraun

The Royal had been under the active management of the Fredericks family for over forty years and they had faithfully carried on the traditions with which they had grown up in the hey-day of the stock company. The mood of the public had changed and there were no sons to change the policy of the theatre to match that different
