Sixth form is a vitally important period of transition, not just from school to university, gap year or workplace, but also from a structured and managed lifestyle to an independent existence as a motivated lifelong learner. Positions and responsibilities

Jacob Cole, Head Boy: “I joined Clifton High, in year 10 and straight away it was obvious that the school had a very positive atmosphere, I immediately felt included and I have loved being a student at Clifton High. When I was elected as Head Boy it made me feel extremely proud and honoured,

since then I have really enjoyed the role I play within the school. I have developed my organizational skills and I have enjoyed the responsibility that comes with being part of the head team, especially attending the “Society of Heads” conference with the Head Girl during the summer holidays. I am looking forward to going to University and I know that the skills I have learned will help me in my future.”

Julia Summers, Head Girl: “When I was elected as Head Girl I felt very proud to be representing Clifton High and acting as a link between students and teachers. The role has helped me to improve my time management skills as well as giving me chances to talk to both parents and pupils at open

The Sixth Form CurriculumMost sixth form students at Clifton High School will study four AS levels in Year 12 and will then continue with three of those subjects to A2 level in Year 13. However, there is room for flexibility as some students choose to continue with all four subjects and a small number consider continuing with just two A2 and one AS subject. We commonly offer (depending on demand) the following subjects at AS/A2 level:

We offer an option block system which is designed to meet as many students’ requirements as possible. However, it must be stressed that with so many subjects available, some combinations may not be possible. Thus, it is important that students are flexible in their approach and are prepared to accept other combinations if their first choice is not possible. One games/PE session is timetabled per week.

In addition to studying four subjects in Year 12, students may also complete an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) to AS level. This project is studied in students’ own time under the supervision of a qualified member of staff; it is usually of particular interest to those wishing to study law or medicine at university, or those who wish to apply to Oxford or Cambridge. We cannot guarantee that this subject will be available or appropriate for all students.

Futures and SkillsThe Futures and Skills programme is designed to add to each student’s experience in the sixth form at CHS. Each fortnight all members of the sixth form meet to listen to lectures or engage in activities designed to add additional knowledge and experience to their A level studies. Each year the course is adapted to meet the needs and interests of the sixth form group. For some sessions years 12 and 13 are combined, at other times they are grouped separately.

The course may incorporate some or all of the following:

• Elements of careers and preparing for university entrance:

There will be opportunity at the start of the course for students to have a say in the design of the course and the features that they would like to see incorporated. Guest speakers are regularly invited in to talk to students about important issues that may impact upon their futures.

Enhanced Learning at Clifton High SchoolAt Clifton High School we aim to realise each and every pupil’s individual brilliance and recognise that this sometimes requires additional support for those with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or other conditions. This individual or small group support is given by the Enhanced Learning Team which is led by a Head of Department and assisted by specialist teachers and learning assistants. The Enhanced Learning Department also provides additional teaching for students for whom English is not their principal

language and supports the Gifted and Talented programme.

The school believes that only if the Enhanced Learning Department is integrated within the mainstream and with the pupil’s and parent’s voice at the heart of the process can it be fully effective. Thus the Enhanced Learning team actively encourages dyslexia friendly class room practice and regular discussion of individual pupil’s needs with their teachers.

Gifted and Talented The Enhanced Learning Department also co-ordinates the many exciting and challenging activities for the Gifted and Talented which take place at School over and above the normal extra-curricular programme. These activities and events are not exclusive to Gifted and Talented pupils, but it is expected that these pupils will take an active role both in participation and organisation. The Sixth Form are encouraged to take a lead in the school community and to organise an annual programme of debates and current affairs discussions which is called the Forum. Class teachers in each of the Key Stages and members of the Enhanced Learning team provide enrichment for those children with particular gifts and talents. Early Years and Junior School children are offered the opportunity to explore their favourite subjects through international organisations that

support gifted and talented students (eg IGGY, International Gateway for Gifted Youth). In the Senior School, each subject faculty provides a range of challenging activities. An example of this is the Games Department which runs the Podium. This is a group of talented sports pupils from Clifton High School who have achieved representative honours at County, Regional or National level. They meet once a month for stimulating discussion on a range of sport related matters. Outside speakers are invited, such as Leah Wilkinson who competed at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010, GB hockey player, Mark Peam and Bristol City FC footballer, Lewin Nyatanga.

Each and every pupil at Clifton High School, what ever their unique talents and abilities, is supported in their individual learning journey and encouraged to realise individual ‘brilliance’.

Extra-curricular ActivitiesMany sixth form students have responsibilities and duties outside their academic timetable that come with being one of the Head’s Team, a prefect, a House Captain or a member of one of the many high-achieving competitive sports teams. As well as these opportunities to develop leadership, organisation and responsibility skills, we offer a wide range of other extra-curricular activities in school as well as actively supporting our students’ involvement with out of school activities and achievements.

We believe that everyone has something excellent to offer and we strive to help each student discover and nurture their own individual passions and talents.

The Duke of Edinburgh AwardTaking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme is a real adventure from beginning to end! It doesn’t matter what your strengths and weaknesses are, you just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and realise that there is more to life than lying on a sofa with the television or Facebook!

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is available at three levels with two being available at Clifton High School. Our candidates usually complete the Bronze Award in Year 10 and go on to complete the Gold Award in Years 12 or 13. You do not have to have the Bronze Award to be able to do the Gold.

You achieve a Bronze Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections.

These sections are:

• Volunteering: helping someone, your community or the environment

• Physical: becoming fitter through sport, dance or fitness activities

• Skills: developing existing talents or trying something new

• Expedition: planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey

You need to be aged 14 or above to start a Bronze Award programme.

You need to be aged 16 or above to start a Gold Award programme and it will take a minimum of 18 months to complete. You have until your 25th birthday to complete the level and achieve an award.

As you progress through the level you will find yourself helping people in the community, getting fitter, developing new skills, going on expeditions to Exmoor, The Mendips and the Cotswolds. You can tailor many aspects of the programme to suit your own interests.

Along the way you will pick up experiences, friends and talents that will stay with you for the rest of your life!

And if you still need to be persuaded, don’t forget that you will be participating in a scheme that is highly valued by university admissions tutors!

World ChallengeThe World Challenge organisation provides schools and colleges with educational expeditions to carefully selected regions of the developing world. They are an experienced company and students and teachers benefit from high levels of safety and support. Taking part in challenging activities in amazing expedition destinations guarantees an extraordinary adventure!The cost is substantial but candidates are encouraged to raise the bulk of the money from their own initiatives.

A practice expedition takes place in the UK in the January prior to departure. This gives candidates an opportunity to assess their levels of fitness and the suitability of their equipment.

The main expedition takes place in the summer holiday and participants are normally away from home for a period of four weeks. During this time they complete a variety of activities which normally includes:

• an acclimatisation trek

• work on a community project (often based in a school or orphanage)

• the main expedition to a key location such as a mountain summit or an area of outstanding scenic beauty

• a period of rest and relaxation

Participants are accompanied by a leader and a school leader for the duration of the trip but are encouraged to take responsibility for all aspects of the trip’s day to day operation. Students may find themselves taking charge of aspects such as group finances, accommodation or transport. The developments of team and leadership skills are seen as important aspects of the experience.

Recent expeditions have seen CHS students visit some exciting destinations to do amazing things:

• 2006, Cambodia and Thailand: planted coconut palms in an orphanage, trekked through the jungle and saw the stunning ruins at Angkor Wat.

• 2008, Uganda: helped build a school classroom, taught pupils and climbed to the 4321m high summit of Wagagai.

• 2010, Nicaragua and Costa Rica: searched for turtles in the early hours and discovered how rainforests got their name.

• 2012, Namibia: helped refurbish a school, worked with children, enjoyed incredible safari and landscape trekking experiences.

Whatever the destination, candidates have found the programme to be truly life changing and they return more confident and more adept at dealing with the challenges that life may throw at them. They will also benefit by taking part in a scheme that is well respected by university admissions tutors.

On more than one occasion parents have admitted that they hardy recognised their offspring on their return!

• Athletics • Badminton • Squash • Fitness Training • Water Polo

All sixth form students are strongly encouraged to take part in sport with a weekly games afternoon. Team training takes place as part of the school’s extra-curricular programme and fixtures against other schools regularly take place during the week and also on a Saturday morning for the majority of all the major sports. Other clubs and opportunities also run throughout the year covering these sports and also including activities such as trampolining, Tae-kwon-Do, fencing, table-tennis, cross-country and dance.

House matches provide a further opportunity to develop competitiveness for those who do not necessarily play in a school team. Tournaments always prove popular with pupils and staff alike. Overseas tours are also arranged for sports teams with our current tour taking place in Malta and with past trips to Barbados and the ski-slopes. There is also the traditional summer Sports Day involving the entire school and, to complete the year, an Annual Sports Lunch is organised to celebrate success and present awards.

Although there is an ethos of emphasis on teamwork and team sports, individual student’s needs and talents are catered for and some go off site to pursue other sporting and recreational activities such as golf and tennis. If a student has a membership at a local sports centre they may choose to exercise there.

Many of our sixth formers remain active in school teams, and training is provided after school and on Saturdays within the extra curricular programme. Regular competitive matches and galas are arranged against local schools, and students are entered for county trials, tournaments, and regional and national competitions.

We encourage our sixth form students to become involved in the school community and many choose to assist with the coaching and teaching of young swimmers and the younger teams. Sixth form students find this a most rewarding experience. It improves their self- confidence and personal development and helps develop leadership skills; such experience is a valuable addition to their UCAS application.

CoachingWe are very proud of our delivery of sports coaching. We offer an extensive extra-curricular programme and have specialist professional-grade coaches who regularly supplement the PE Department with their expertise, including:

• Mike Leatt – hockey

• Matt Salter – rugby

• Olly Munro – trampoline

FacilitiesThe excellent on-site facilities demonstrate the importance of sport at CHS. These include:

• a fantastic and much-utilised indoor heated 25m swimming pool

• a well-equipped gymnasium with trampolining facilities and indoor space for wet weather programmes

• a brand new all-weather floodlit Multi-User Games Area designed for a range of court sports including basketball, netball, tennis, five-a-side football, hockey and street cricket.

CHS has shared ownership of the nearby Coombe Dingle Sport Complex (in partnership with Bristol University and the Lawn Tennis Association) where pupils enjoy sports fields, floodlit water and sand based artificial turf pitches, grass pitches, outdoor and indoor tennis courts.

Hockey fixtures, football, rugby, cricket and athletics training are all held up at Coombe Dingle and we also make use of other local facilities to accommodate a vast range of activities. These include Kingsdown Leisure Centre where badminton lessons are held and Horfield Leisure Centre where the Sixth Form have use of the fitness suite, larger pool, squash and badminton.

The school enjoys good links with clubs who also make use of the facilities at Coombe Dingle. Many pupils also play for these clubs. They are:

Profile of a Clifton High studentHelen Milne joined Clifton High in Year 7

My time at Clifton High as both Head Girl and a student will always remain a very fond memory to me.

My choice to stay on at sixth form proved to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made – the nurturing and passion of my teachers allowed me to excel creatively in my A Level choices of Art, Textiles and English Literature.

Equally, the inter-personal skills and leadership qualities I have taken away from my time as Head Girl are invaluable; something I have truly come to realise now I have left Clifton High and am beginning my venture in the creative industry.

I am currently studying a year-long University of the Arts London: Art Foundation Diploma, and I am soon to start my university application process, hoping to gain entry to Falmouth University, Bournemouth Arts University or one of the London Arts University group to study Textile Design.

I am extremely grateful to my teachers and the whole of Clifton High Sixth Form for pushing me to reach my full potential, and I am very excited to apply to university on the back of an excellent set of A level results.

Student profiles

Caroline ClementsI made the decision to stay at Clifton High because they offered me all the language subjects I wanted to do – Latin, Greek, German and French. I receive excellent tuition in my subjects in very small classes, including an hour a week with the native speaking French and German assistants. Working hard is something that is actively encouraged here. The teachers are friendly and dedicated to helping me reach my full potential.

Lucy BryanI have been at Clifton High School since Year 7. I compete in pole vaulting at an international level and the school has been very supportive when I have needed time off for competitions. I am studying PE, biology, geography and chemistry and I intend to go to university to study a sports-related course.

Susan Powell I came to Clifton High School in Year 7 and I chose to stay on for the Sixth Form because of the wide variety of subjects available. I know the teachers well and they are all so approachable. I am doing biology, chemistry, physics and maths. The science department has very good facilities which makes learning even more enjoyable. In the Sixth Form we are encouraged to be independent, a vital lifeskill, but the teachers are really willing to help if you have any problems.

Henrietta Feeny I came to CHS in the Nursery and was awarded a senior scholarship; there was never a thought that I would move for Sixth Form as the professionalism, dedication and caring of the staff had been proven. In these last important years I appreciate the approachable but constant driving force from my teachers who are giving so much to help me fulfil my dream of being a vet. I am in excellent hands.

Matthew BrayEntering the school in Year 9 was a somewhat unconventional introduction to the atmosphere of CHS but within weeks the ethos of striving for excellence was absolutely apparent. This excellence is what will facilitate my goals for both A levels and also for university where I hope to study Physics or Chemistry. I also swim competitively to a national level; the School’s flexibility and support has allowed me to pursue this in parallel to my academic targets.

Zack WangI am a Chinese student and came to Clifton High in Y12. From many choices, I have chosen to study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics. I am delighted to be here with many opportunities, like the Maths competition. We are encouraged to face challenges independently and confidently. CHS is quite different from my old school in China and I really enjoy my colourful school life now.

Grades and University Places

The grades you achieve at advanced level are critical in gaining a place at your chosen university. Grades required vary from one subject to another and from one institution to another. For some courses, such as medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, high grades (AAB or even A*AA) are essential in addition to high GCSE passes and a range of other personal qualities.

The same is true of many popular courses like English and law for which highly regarded universities (i.e. Russell Group Universities) often require the highest grades (AAA). It is unrealistic to apply for such courses if your grade predictions are low.

However, where entry is not so competitive, lower pass grades are acceptable and often the new system of UCAS points will be used. Students can now be offered a university place dependent on total points scored with their AS and A2 levels or they can receive a traditional offer based on the grades achieved in three A2 levels.

Note that at AS and A level pass grades are from A* to E, not like GCSE where a pass is considered to be A* to C.

In recent years, just about all Clifton High School students have gained entry to higher education; only one or two students each year decide not to pursue this option, instead choosing to concentrate on their sporting, military or other vocational careers.

Termly fees 2012/13Optional Insurance

Optional premiums will appear on the first term’s bill – please delete where cover is not required for:

• Personal Accident £6

• Healthcare Insurance £65

• Fees Refund 1% of tuition fees for all pupils. Claims may be made for a period of continuous absence due to ill health of at least 5 days (excluding weekends). Claims should be made within 3 days of the end of term.

External Examinations

All external examination fees are payable by parents or guardians, except for certain Assisted Place Schemes.

Lunch and refreshments

Charges are billed in arrears. School lunch is mandatory for pupils from Year 1 through to Year 11.

Pupils in the Reception class and in the Sixth Form may choose to have school lunches or to bring packed lunches; the school lunch option is a commitment for a whole term.

Year 7-13 Pupils may bring their own refreshments or a range of affordable drinks and snacks are available daily from the Beech Café.

The Extended Day: Early Birds, Late Room and Tea Club

Inclusive Early Birds and Late Room services run for pupils before and after school; Tea Club is also available as an optional after-school extension for early years and junior pupils as follows:

3.30pm to 4.15pm with Late Room free of charge

4.15pm until 6pm £3 per 15 minutes

6pm onwards £4 per 15 minutes

International Boarding at Clifton High School

At Clifton High, we prepare our students for life in a global and multicultural world. We strongly believe that modern students benefit from interacting with and studying alongside others from culturally different backgrounds and we are delighted to welcome applications from students around the world.

We provide a unique scheme whereby our international students live with host families who have strong and close connections with the school. This ensures that the foreign student lives in a homely and secure atmosphere, totally immersed in the English culture and language, adjusting quickly and easily in his or her new environment.

Our international students benefit from a dedicated home boarding coordinator who oversees their adjustment to their new life in England and follows their progress all through the Sixth Form. The home coordinator is available at all times to support boarding students socially and academically. We provide a vibrant school environment where teachers and staff are always happy to help, each pupil having a personal tutor who monitors the progress of his or her students. In addition to the normal academic courses we run many extra-curricular clubs. You will have the opportunity to do a variety of sports, partake in or lead numerous clubs and participate in school trips.

We ensure that all our students receive every support they need to achieve high results for their A level or GCSE courses. Integration into school life, excellence in studies and an appreciation for the ‘English way of life’ are all benefits of studying at CHS for international students and these are key to making successful applications to prestigious universities in the UK or elsewhere, such as in Hong Kong. Our international students receive tailor-made advice, guidance and individual support in applying to the universities of their choice.

We provide a boarding experience which we hope will last the pupil a lifetime. Our international students leave with an excellent academic education and many new English friends. Most of our former students keep in touch with their English families and we often receive applications from new international students who were recommended to the school by former pupils who have greatly appreciated their boarding and school experience.

International students are required to provide school reports and a personal statement in the first instance. They may then be invited to sit the Clifton High entrance examination and take the ‘IELT’s. Students will be asked to provide their own guardian. Host boarding places are strictly limited each year to ensure that our international students all benefit from a truly British experience while they are with us.

Academic ScholarshipsAt sixth form level we offer a number of academic

scholarships with financial awards, typically ranging in value

from £250 to £1500 per year. Our aim is to give those who

do not already hold an academic scholarship an opportunity

to make an application for one.

If you currently hold a CHS scholarship or school assisted

place you will continue to hold these for as long as you

remain here, but you are also able to apply for a Sixth Form

Academic Scholarship. School policy does not allow you

to hold two financial awards but if your application for a

sixth form scholarship is successful, we will award you the

greater amount of the two. If you are not eligible for an

increase in financial reward, your scholarship will be held

in an honorary capacity.

Suitable candidates may apply for an academic scholarship

and will be required to:

• identify three subjects that you are considering studying

to full A level.

• attend an interview (approximately 15 minutes) with the

head of department in each of these subjects; the purpose

of this will be to identify scholarly awareness of the wider

dimensions of the subject as well as genuine interest in,

and commitment to this subject at Advanced level.

• attend an interview with Dr Alison Neill, Head of School,

during which you will be expected to give a short

presentation on a topic of your choice, relevant to your

subject choice at A level.

Final awards will be made on the basis of a combination

of all the above factors. If you win a scholarship you will

be expected to study at least two of your nominated

subjects to A level.

Sports, Creative Arts and Performing Arts AwardThere are some pupils who may feel that their particular talents or abilities lie in the area of sports, creative arts or performing arts. The School has always valued such talents and so offers the opportunity to apply for a sixth form award based on practical aptitude in one of these areas.

Definitions and ExpectationsCreative Arts covers textiles technology and art; Performing Arts covers drama and music. Pupils applying for an award under these headings are expected to focus on one of the disciplines, not both (i.e. either textiles or art; either music or drama)

Pupils who are given awards are expected to either to study the subject at A level or in the case of applicants for an award in music or sports, continue to participate in school music or sport. All successful candidates will be expected to contribute to school life in their specialist area throughout their sixth form career and to act as role models for their peers and juniors in their commitment to and endeavour in their specialist field.

If a student is awarded a Sixth Form Academic Scholarship he/she will not also be awarded a Sports, Creative Arts or Performing Arts Award.

Selection processPupils who are interested in being considered for an award are required to indicate this by means of a handwritten letter to Dr Neill, Head of School, usually in early November. A deadline will be set and made known near the time.

The letter should outline what the student has achieved in their chosen field to date, how she/he intends to continue pursuing this both in and out of school, and what the candidate has to offer the school in their specialist area.

A candidate will have two interviews, one with Dr Alison Neill, Head of School, and one with the Head of the department in which their particular talents lie.

The interviews will take place in late November.

In all interviews, the school will be assessing the candidate’s

• Abilities in the practical (not theoretical) aspects of their chosen subject

• Level of commitment to the subject

• Passion for and understanding of the importance of their chosen subject

• Pursuit of their chosen subject outside school as well as in school life

• Willingness to contribute to school life in their chosen subject

• Ability to set an example of leadership and excellence in their chosen subject

Decisions about awards are usually announced by the end of term.
