WINNING SPINSDRUMMERS ARE KNOWN AS MAS-

ters of the groove, the band memberswho keep ensembles percolating. Both ofthe albums covered here are from leaderswho spend much of their time behind drumkits: One CD even has the word "groove" inthe title. But this time around, leaderChuck Redd sticks to his other malletinstrument, vibes, leaving the groove-keeping to the master drummer LewisNash. The other album is from Al Foster, aversatile drummer famous for his work inMiles Davis' later funk- and fusion-orient-ed bands. As Al's current trumpeter,Jeremy Pelt, affirms, "No matter what thesetting, Al is always swinging with a deepgroove."

On Groove City (Dalphine), ChuckRedd presides over a rhythm team thatpairs Lewis with the formidably swingingbassist Nicki Parrott; pianist John diMartino rounds out the quartet. Tenor sax-ophonist Jerry Weldon, long a featuredsoloist in Harry Connick Jr.'s big band, joins in on five tracks. Chuck's tune "AGroove for Gail," dedicated to his wife, is afunky take on "I Got Rhythm" changes, alternating backbeat and straight 4/4 timebehind soloists, including John's onlyFender Rhodes excursion on the album. There's also a coruscating solo from Jerry, and shout chorus riffs punctuating Lewis'drum solo. "Blues in the Shedd," anotheroriginal from Chuck, is a lively bluesnotable for intricate trade-offs betweenplayers during the theme, and spiritedsolos from all.

Almost more intriguing are Chuck'schoices of covers and standards, and hisapproach to arranging them. He haspicked ballads perfect for the resonantsound of his vibes, including "Don't Let theSun Catch You Cryin'" and "All or Nothingat All" (patterned after a 1966 FrankSinatra-Nelson Riddle recording). BillyStrayhorn's "A Flower Is a LovesomeThing," is a lyrical vibes/piano duet. Alsomesmeric is the quartet's subtly shiftingperspectives on Ornette Coleman's "LonelyWoman," emphasizing the melody's deepresonance. Chuck keeps his Brazilian ref-erences fresh too, choosing "Tide," AntonioCarlos Jobim's lesser-known variation onhis hit "Wave," for the CD's bossa nova, and turning Thelonious Monk's "Evidence"into a high-stepping samba, with Jerry'stenor sax featured. Chuck references the

Caribbean in two compositions byJamaican Monty Alexander, one of hisfavorite bandleaders. "Renewal" buildsslowly from two introductory repeatednotes through rising solos from Chuck,John and Nicki. "Regulator" is a hot rifftune built on funk beats that shifts tostraight, hard-driving swing for Jerry's saxsolo. Throughout, the album lives up toChuck's promise of a rewarding jazzgroove.

On Al Foster's Inspirations andDedications (Smoke Sessions), he book-ends 11 originals with tunes from leadershe greatly admires. Both Herbie Hancock's"Cantaloupe Island" and Miles Davis'"Jean-Pierre" are fueled by variations ofthe shuffling, calypso-inflected grooveknown as Al's "Fungi Mama" beat. Al'smemorable originals are surprising in thatthey are all composed by a drummer whodoesn't read much music and writes hissongs intuitively on the piano, picking outmelodies and harmonies by ear.

On this album, the drummer is ablyabetted by his quintet members: tenor sax-ophonist Dayna Stephens (who also sup-plies baritone on one track), trumpeterJeremy Pelt, pianist Adam Birnbaum, anda longtime associate, bassist Doug Weiss.Al's tunes celebrate family members, including his wife, his late son, four daugh-ters, and a grandson, as well as Doug andhimself. That last, "Aloysius," begins withthe album's only extended drum solo. Mostof Al's pieces are introduced by Adam's solopiano, and there is a cornucopia of varyingtimes, tempos and rhythmic feels to thesongs, with all propelled by what Daynacalls Al's "loose precision." Except for theshort piano solo "Brandyn" and theHarmon mute trumpet dirge "Our Son,"both dedicated to Al's deceased son, themood of the album is celebratory. Amongthe highlights are the light-footed 6/8"Simone's Dance," the pulsating Caribbean"Song for Monique," and the shifting times(3/4, 6/8, 4/4) of "Jazzon," a bright quintetsalute to Al's grandson.

Al Foster's quintet, featuring thepersonnel from Inspirations &Dedications, will play a CD release gigat Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, June20-22. Chuck Redd and his band willcelebrate the release of Groove City atJazz at Kitano June 28-29.

MUSICIANS WHO PLAY REEDSand at least some brass instruments

are usually considered versatile, but to callScott Robinson versatile is woefully inad-equate. Scott not only knows his wayaround all the saxophones, flutes and clar-inets, he also plays the brass family fromtrumpet all the way down to tuba. Not tomention his theremin, sheng, or bassmarimba.

Scott's versatility stretches beyond thelengthy list of instruments he's at homewith to encompass the kinds of music he'scomfortable with. Concert-goers at NewJersey Jazz Society gigs will fondlyremember him playing trumpet, clarinetand C melody saxophone at their trad jazz-oriented events. Sun Ra fans will want tocheck out his work with Arkestra alumniin his Heliosonic Tone-tette's HeliosonicToneways CD on his own ScienSonic label. And followers of Maria Schneider's award-winning orchestra will remember him asthat band's baritone saxophonist, who dou-bles on woodwinds like clarinet and flute.

When talking to Scott on the phonerecently, I suggested that he, like thebassist Greg Cohen, is a jazz musician whocan go in any stylistic direction, from tradand swing to avant-garde and everythingin between.

"What I love about Greg is he's so natu-ral and genial and gets down with any-thing, making himself comfortable in anysituation," Scott says. "I'm a little differ-ent. I'm picky about music but I'm notpicky about style."

As to his astounding instrumental ver-satility, Scott notes, "I've never forgotten, but other people have, that tenor sax is mymain instrument. I love all these othersounds, and still love to play trumpet buttenor is my main horn, it's central to myworld."

The tenor Scott plays is a silver Conn1924 model he bought in an antiques storein 1975, one that he has rehabbed andrepaired many times but still prefers toother tenors he occasionally plays. It "justsings," he explains.

His ScienSonic Laboratories, what Scottcalls his "lab," occupies a soundproof build-

ing behind his house in New Jersey. Hebecame serious about his daily practiceregimen in the lab last year when heagreed to take on pianist FrankKimbrough's project of recording all ofThelonious Monk's compositions. Theresult is the six CD Monk's Dreams album, with a quartet rounded out by bassistRufus Reid and drummer Ray Drummond.

"I'm not so conceited as to say I learned70-plus Monk tunes," Scott says, "but I didlisten to all of Monk's recorded versions. But the word 'learn' is a very large word. Itis not the same as 'mastered,' and I can'tsay I've mastered all those Monk tunes. Infact, I still mix them up when I'm trying toremember one from another."

Scott plays mostly tenor sax on thealbum, since Monk's quartets always fea-tured a tenor. "Of all these great tenorplayers, my favorite foil for Monk wasSonny Rollins, who was in synch withMonk rhythmically and harmonically," henotes.

The musician turned 60 in April, a mile-stone that spurred him to step up his dailypracticing, concentrating on tenor sax. Itwas also an impetus to start a dream proj-ect of his own, creating a symphony for 50instruments. "It's all improvised and I'mcreating it one note at a time in my lab, playing all the instruments. I'm still work-ing on the first note after a week, with sax, sousaphone, clarinet, bass drum, tuba andmore. If I want a theremin, I can have it; Ican have 13 theremins. It's not music youcan see done anywhere but I can do it,right here in my lab."

19Thomas photo by Jack Vartoogian.

SINCE HER ARRIVAL IN NEW YORKin 2007, the Peoria, Ill.-born vocalist, composer and arranger Brianna Thomasis among the best-kept secrets in the BigApple, though seemingly hiding in plainsight. She's worked as a sidewoman withseveral jazz stars including HoustonPerson, Clark Terry and Russell Malone, but she is primarily known for her longassociation with Wynton Marsalis andJazz at Lincoln Center. Her supple sopra-no voice can effortlessly mine the deepestemotional nuances of any lyric, and deliverthe most soulful and syncopated scat andthe speed of swing. Brianna has been awelcome presence at JALC's ColumbusCircle headquarters and is also featured onWynton's soundtrack for the new movieBolden. continued on page 29

This month, Brianna brings her band toGinny's Supper Club, a Harlem venuewhere she's performed several times. She'llbe backed by pianist Conun Pappas, bassist Ryan Berg, Brazilian percussionistFernando Saci, guitarist Marvin Sewell, and an alternating roster of drummersthat includes John Davis, Kyle Poole,Wayne Smith and Darrian Douglas. Thevocalist leads her ensemble through apleasing potpourri of reimagined stan-dards and original compositions, with asound that purrs and percolates."Everybody in the band likes all kinds ofmusic, and has strong roots in blues, jazzand R&B," she proudly proclaims. "RyanBerg described the band as the sound ofthe Mississippi River, and I love thatdescription! The band has that Africandiaspora, Great Migration sound."

Among the originals Brianna plans toperform at Ginny's is "You Are Not Mine,"a tune with a decidedly French-Africancharacter, which will be on her upcomingCD, tentatively titled Everybody Knows, produced by Grammy Award-winning pro-ducer Brian Bacchus. "The songs on thealbum speak some truths that I thinkeverybody knows," she says cryptically. "Idid the arrangements on my first album,You Must Believe in Love [released in2014]. There were four original songs onthat album, and on this new album, we'llhave two original songs. This is my firstrecording with my working band. Thisalbum is going to show that we're a family."

Growing up in the Midwest, Briannawas surrounded by music from an earlyage, thanks to her mother, a non-musicianwho had an eclectic record collection, andher father, drummer/vocalist Charlie "CJ"Thomas, who took her to clubs when shewas 2, and had her singing in his groupswhen she was 6. "My parents gifted mewith an open mind to sound," she says. "Iwas fortunate to grow up watching myfather have a regular working band andhearing the sound they were able toachieve. And my mom listened to every-body from Bessie Smith and DinahWashington to James Brown."

Brianna's familial music education paidoff. At age 12, she toured Europe with thePeoria Jazz All-Stars, led by educatorMary Jo Papich. The singer moved toNashville in 2005, after finishing highschool, and performed in numerous bands, including a salsa ensemble. A year later, producer Todd Barkan invited her to singin JALC's Women in Jazz Festival in NewYork; she moved to the city in 2006 andenrolled at The New School, from whichshe graduated in 2011. Brianna spentyears singing in local jam sessions, andeventually caught Wynton's ear; he firsthired her to perform in his Harvard

ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATEBy Elzy Kolb

Clarke photo by Solwazi-Afi-Olusola, Hayama by Gulnara Khamatova.

Rhythm nation

MANY MUSICIANS AIM TO BEband leaders from the get-go, but Neil

Clarke has found satisfaction through hislong-running collaborations with a coupleof musical masters. The percussionistworked with singer/songwriter/actor/activist Harry Belafonte for almost 15years, followed by close to three decadeswith Randy Weston, until the pianist'sdeath in September 2018.

"I would definitely not be the musician Iam today without my tenure with Randy. It was an incredibly inspiring and chal-lenging opportunity, and it was totally lib-erating," Neil notes. "Randy said he wastrying to play drums on piano, and I wastrying to play piano on drums. We met inthe middle."

Weston's African Rhythms ensembleoften performed without a drum set, whichcould be a surprise to concert-goers expect-ing the familiar piano-bass-drums configu-ration. "People believed Randy used per-cussion because of Africa," Neil says, "Buthe preferred percussion because a drum-set player put time on the cymbals andthat dominated the high register.Percussion left the high register wide open, without the overarching sustain of the ridecymbal. I use a cymbal to accentuate—notdefine—the time."

These days, playing music he's thor-oughly familiar with presents a new chal-lenge for the percussionist. He quotes thelate trombonist Benny Powell, anotherAfrican Rhythms mainstay, as saying:"Randy doesn't have gigs, he has adven-tures." Neil muses, "How do we navigatethese adventures with Randy's guidancebut without his presence? That's a newadventure."

He continues, "Because of the amount oftime I spent with him, there were instinc-tive communications between us. Now, it'slike Fred and Ginger swapped partners:Whoever you're dancing with is just asgood, but that intangible connection isn't

there."In the past year, Neil has been testing

the waters as a leader, playing Westoncompositions with unique instrumentationincluding percussion, bass, vibes and steeldrums. He debuted the ensemble inBrooklyn in honor of the NEA JazzMaster's 92nd birthday in April 2018, withRandy attending. "He was the first onethrough the door," Neil recalls with achuckle. "It was such an honor and such achallenge. Instead of stressing, over-think-ing, over-orchestrating, I just took a pagefrom Randy's book and let it happen. Itwas an incredible evening, he loved it. I gotto interpret his music in a configuration henever used." Neil got the same playerstogether again this year, celebrating whatwould have been Randy's 93rd birthday."He inspired and challenged me and sentme on a path I'm beginning to explore onmy own now."

Neil will reunite with African Rhythmsbandmates saxophonist T.K. Blue andbassist Alex Blake, along with a specialguest, trombonist Steve Turre, to performas the Weston Alumni Band at theHighlights in Jazz concert. "RememberingErroll & Randy" is the theme of the June20 concert at BMCC Tribeca PerformingArts Center, paying tribute to Westonand fellow pianist Erroll Garner. Sharingthe bill will be the Erroll Garner Project, featuring pianist Christian Sands, drum-mer Ulysses Owens and bassist LuquesCurtis. Producer Jack Kleinsinger makesno secret of his hope that every Highlightsin Jazz concert will end in a jam, so therecould be some surprises in store.

June is a big month for saluting RandyWeston. Neil, T.K., Alex and others willhonor him at the Kennedy Center inWashington, D.C., June 9. On June 19,the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium willinduct the pianist into its hall of fame witha concert and celebration at BedfordStuyvesant Restoration Corporation.

MATT SLOCUMSAINT PETER'S CHURCH / JUNE 15From his early days on the jazz scene, Matt Slocum has asserted his role as both adrummer and a bandleader. A noted holistic composer and player savvy beyond hisyears, since his salad days in Wisconsin, Matt has followed a path not often taken, through studies in Minneapolis and time at USC with Peter Erskine. With a handfulof recordings, the drummer has established a spiritual yet swinging sound few haveachieved. An early CD, Portraits, set a tone for further explorations, leading to his newSunnyside effort, Sanctuary. It's a beautiful set of music made as a tonic for the troops.Pianist Gerald Clayton and bassist Larry Grenadier help Matt through his journey tosanity and common sense via a vision of peace and safety. MGN

YOKO MIWAPALACE THEATER / JUNE 14Yoko Miwa is without any doubt Boston's best-kept jazz secret. A formidable pianistand composer, Yoko finds a remarkable balance between jaw-dropping keyboard tech-nique paired with an almost Bill Evans-like lyricism. Indeed, in her hands, well-wornstandards by figures like Monk and Mingus feel like exciting new premieres, whilepieces representing unusual fare for jazz—songs by Lou Reed or even Aerosmith—get astonishingly thoughtful and compelling treatments. Leading a trio of bassist WillSlater and drummer Scott Goulding, Yoko will celebrate the release of her latestalbum, Keep Talkin', a joyfully exciting record that highlights both her interpretiveand composing chops. The world has slept long enough on Yoko Miwa's talents; herupcoming appearance is essential for any fan of jazz piano. SH

DAVID BIXLERBIRDLAND / JUNE 6 Alto saxophonist David Bixler took a break from music after his youngest child suf-fered a brain injury. Now he's back to jazz with renewed focus and purpose. His newCD, In the Face of Chaos (Red Piano Records), addresses not only the current politi-cal climate, but the need for us all to recognize our family priorities. His music andtone are soft, lyrical and melodic on this program of original compositions and anadapted spiritual, sounding as reflective or introspective as you might expect consid-ering his ordeal. Bandmates on the recording include pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist IkeSturm and drummer/percussionist Rogerio Boccato. David, who splits his timebetween New York and Bowling Green State University in Ohio, also has recorded anupcoming nonet CD, Blended Lineage. David and his band will perform at Smalls JazzClub June 7-8 as well. MGN

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE RIDGEFIELD PLAYHOUSE / JUNE 5Those who hear Christian McBride's ensembles live immediately discover that hiscompositions and arrangements teem with the fire, refinement and sonic boom pres-ent in his playing. Ability to command the direction of the music is a hallmark of hisexpression. A man with many titles—bass player, composer, arranger, leader, com-munity facilitator, keyholder—who has collaborated with diverse icons from SonnyRollins to Carly Simon, Christian takes the legacy of oral tradition and mentorshipseriously. He seeks to create lasting opportunities for young artists to be heard, seen, inspired and encouraged through real-world inclusion. In Ridgefield, Christian's TipCity band will feature pianist Emmet Cohen and guitarist Dan Wilson. His big bandwill appear at Dizzy's June 11-16 and 20-23, including trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, singer Melissa Walker and saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin among others. SJ

SAM NEWSOMEBUSHWICK PUBLIC HOUSE / JUNE 3Soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome is a prime example of what a modern jazz musi-cian can achieve, with his tone beautifully balancing post-bop characteristics and out-side-the-box extended techniques. After cutting his teeth with trumpeters DonaldByrd, Terence Blanchard and others, Sam's work took a giant leap with the release ofSam I Am. This inspired debut album captured his brilliant compositions as well ashis approach to standard jazz repertoire. That approach has resulted in more than adozen albums since, with his latest, Chaos Theory: Song Cycles for PreparedSaxophone, set for June 3 release. Singer Charmaine Lee and guitarist Joe Morris willjoin Sam in concert for an evening of improvised music that will no doubt exceedexpectations and shine a light on the saxophonist's creative output. BILL MAYS MEZZROW / JUNE 28-29From the moment that he takes the stage, Bill Mays shows he is a multifaceted com-municator. A versatile improviser at the piano, he also has a vast repertoire at his fin-gertips and is a skilled arranger with the ability to add a few twists to the most fre-quently played standards. As evidenced by his song "Judy," which has appeared onseveral film soundtracks, Bill is a gifted composer. Besides occasionally adding afriendly vocal or two to his set, the pianist takes the time between selections to givebackground about some of the composers he's playing, something uncommon thesedays. For this engagement, he will be joined by frequent collaborators bassist MartinWind and drummer Matt Wilson, both of whom appear on his recently released CD,Live At COTA. KD

RANDY NAPOLEONDIZZY'S CLUB / JUNE 24Still young though quite experienced, Randy Napoleon is moving to the forefront ofexcellent mainstream jazz guitarists. Randy, who is from Ann Arbor, Mich., went fromstudent to prodigy and frontman through experiences with Michael Bublé, FreddyCole, and various organ combos, plus roles as instructor at the University of Michigan, and currently Michigan State University. His fluidity and ease of invention is impres-sive, but the happiness of his music is what truly stands out. He even-handedly blendssingle line, chords, swing and soul. At this show, Randy will showcase his love for theMidwestern guitar legacy of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Kenny Burrell.M.S.U. DAVE STRYKER SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / JUNE 21-22With a presence his listeners can feel before they hear him play a single note, guitaristand composer Dave Stryker lights a fire that burns holes in the bandstand. Loose andlyrical, his expression stretches out over familiar changes, and explores new and col-laborative ideas. Though individualism pushes his artistry, Dave remains connectedto a lineage bigger than his own sound—a lineage he engaged directly when he joinedBrother Jack McDuff's band in the mid-1980s. His new album, Eight Track III,released on Strikezone Records, Dave's own label, includes his arrangements for com-positions by Curtis Mayfield, Roy Ayers, Stevie Wonder, and Walter Becker andDonald Fagen, among other influential artists. Dave's release gig will feature organ-ist Jared Gold, drummer McClenty Hunter and vibraphonist Joe Doubleday. SJ

BENNETT PASTERROCKWOOD MUSIC HALL / JUNE 18A very fine keyboardist and pianist, Bennett Paster grows seemingly by leaps andbounds with every project. On his new CD, Indivisible, he doesn't synthesize his influ-ences, but rather turns every composition into his own private vision of blues, main-stream jazz, funk, New Orleans and beyond. The Albuquerque native studied withGeri Allen and Stanley Cowell at New England Conservatory, was known for co-lead-ing the famed Grupo Yanqui, and has been a sideman with Kurt Elling and AnnHampton Callaway. He displays bebop sensibilities while reserving the best of hisimmense talents for a sense of teamwork. His bandmates on the CD include bassistJeff Hanley, drummer Tony Mason, guitarist Al Street, tenor saxophonist KennyBrooks, percussionist Todd Isler and conga player Samuel Torres. MGN

ALLAN HARRISSIDE DOOR / JUNE 29A singer with both romantic charisma and what Jon Hendricks called "hipness," AllanHarris carries on in the tradition of jazz-soul baritones like Billy Eckstine and ArthurPrysock. In his tenderer moments, Allan can also conjure the suave sophistication ofNat King Cole. He's recorded an admirable tribute to Nat, as well as rememberingsome of his underappreciated forebears on a couple of CDs in his Black Bar Jukeboxseries. As a songwriter, Allan's crowning achievement is Cross That River, his musi-cal evocation of Old West black cowboys, proving that he's an outstanding composer aswell as an interpreter. On his latest album he pays tribute to the pioneer of vocalese:The Genius of Eddie Jefferson. In NYC, Allan can be heard at Ginny's June 6. GK

Fronting her own ensemble in clubsaround Manhattan was once a regularthing for pianist Miki Hayama. But thisworking mom's band leading has been onhiatus for a while, since her busy schedulehas left her with scant time to devote tobooking her own gigs. In recent years, she'sbeen playing, touring and recording withthe likes of Nnenna Freelon, SylviaCuenca, Sharel Cassity, Victor Lewis, LeaDeLaria, Jazzmeia Horn, Adonis Rose,Greg Osby and others. Miki also has a reg-ular church gig and sets aside time forcomposing. "Everyone thought I disap-peared. That's not so. I have stayed busywith other bands."

That's about to change, on June 26,when Miki is set to front a quintet in theBig Apple for the first time in seven years. She'll be at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club aspart of the New York Japanese JazzFestival, produced by alto saxophonistVincent Herring. "I've known him for 18years, and I played in his band back in theday," she notes. "There are so many peoplestruggling to get gigs, I was honored to becalled."

Miki is known for her straight-aheadplaying on countless gigs and four albumsunder her own name. But she notes thather style has evolved, thanks to a combi-nation of life experience, her travels andmusic she's playing in church. "As life goeson, I've met a lot of people, a lot of musi-cians. I've been influenced by the differentenvironments, and that experience is mov-ing my music in different directions. Itfeels natural to play and write music forwhere I'm at now."

She continues, "There's been a lot ofinfluence from gospel music while playingHammond organ at a black church for thepast 10 years. It's modern gospel with a lotof reharmonizing." At Smoke, Miki plansto play piano and synthesizer: "I've beenstudying synthesizer for the past threeyears, that's opened up a lot of possibilitiesin music for me." She's been writing steadi-ly, and expects to premiere four originalsand likely her take on a Japanese folk tuneat the gig.

Accompanying her will be Mark Shimon tenor sax and wind controller, JamieBaum on flute, Matt Brewer on electricbass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums andpercussion. The tenor/flute combination isnew for Miki, who has often led trios, sometimes adding an alto or trumpet. Shehas a long-running musical relationshipwith Mark and Jamie, but this will be herfirst outing with the rhythm section. "Iplayed with Mark years ago, we touredwith Mimi Jones and recorded with her. Iknew that for my next project I'd call him.I like that he plays wind controller, whichI've been into for a couple of years. Jamieis a great composer; I've known her for

about 10 years. We used to jam at herplace."

She hopes to record with the quintetsoon, which she assembled to reflect hernew sound. "It has elements of avant-gardewith a lot of groove, so it has to be the rightmusicians," Miki notes, adding that there'sa good chance special guests will join thequintet on the bandstand at Smoke.

HOT FLASHESDouble Hat: Dion Parson on Music

and Education

TO SEE DION PARSON'S 21STCentury Band in performance is to

receive a master class in a range of modernpopular music. Incorporating a vast arrayof styles heard throughout the Caribbean,Dion has, in his ensemble, built a micro-cosm of the musical experiences heabsorbed during his upbringing in the U.S.Virgin Islands. As the 21st Century Bandreadies for its return to Dizzy's ClubJune 7-9, it prepares to offer Dion's trade-mark ability to re-forge and reinterpretjazz standards employing the full array ofthe Caribbean's musical vocabulary. However, exciting as it will be, the 21stCentury Band's performances offer onlypart of the story: On June 10, another sideof Dion's efforts—educator and mentor—will be featured at Dizzy's by the VI JazzCollective, an ensemble comprising some ofthe Virgin Islands' top young talents, men-tored by Dion.

Dion Parson

For Dion, the fusing of education andperformance has always been central to hiswork, in particular providing education tothe Virgin Islands. "I left St. Thomas in1985 to study at Rutgers, but I came home

every single year," he recalls. "I would goback to my old high school and talk to thestudents. I'd donate instruments, and I'dwork summer band programs with RonBlake." Rising organically from a desire togive back, Dion's early efforts ultimatelyled to grant funding to establish an educa-tion presence. From this initial work, paired with the efforts and vision of hiswife, Nicole, United Jazz Foundation wasborn. "That allowed me to develop a cur-riculum," he notes. "United JazzFoundation became a platform for talentedyoung students from the Virgin Islands tostudy with me and members of my band.We would come home throughout the yearto mentor these students."Indeed, the breadth of musical ability in

the Virgin Islands is nothing short ofremarkable, and the tremendous range oflive music heard there ensures a wonder-fully diverse array of young talents. WithUnited Jazz Foundation, Dion has built aplatform that helps to translate that skillinto professional and educational develop-ment opportunities through touring andscholarship support. "Once the studentsare in, they're committed," he notes. "Andthe best students travel with me in thesummer. They see the opportunities forthem if they're willing to study hard andlearn." VI Jazz Collective therefore repre-sents both the top young talent of theVirgin Islands as well as the results ofyears of hard work on Dion's part, buildingand nurturing the jazz education platform."This is a labor of love for me," Dionexplains. "This is a summer tour for us,and the students will be learning andrecording."Ultimately, Dion's efforts enable him to

harness his lifetime of knowledge andhard-earned experience to set up the nextgeneration for success. "When I left home,I didn't have much guidance," he recalls."So the concept of United Jazz Foundationis to bridge the gap between the students'music education and the real world. We'vebeen fortunate to have great partnershipsthat nurture the students."Dion Parson and the 21st Century Band

will release their latest CD Live at Dizzy'sClub Vol. III and celebrate their 20thAnniversary at Dizzy’s Club June 7-9;Dion will direct the VI Jazz Collective atDizzy’s June 10. To learn more about Dionand United Jazz Foundation, visitwww.unitedjazz.org.

Preparing for an upcomingsolo concert at the Jazz Gallery, Theo dis-cusses his personal relationship with theinstitution of solo piano performance: "Ilike how vulnerable solo playing is, it's achance to really open up and connect withan audience. Even though it's a solo per-formance, it has the power to become com-munal almost instantaneously."

That's not to say that this practice does-n't come with formidable challenges. AsTheo says, "Sometimes I take sound forgranted because I spend a lot of time play-ing solo when I'm practicing or preparingfor gigs with ensembles. It's easy to forgetthe weight of the materials we work with as

A very different project is Scott's newCD, his first exclusively on tenor sax, withhis working quartet: Tenormore (ArborsRecords). The band, with Helen Sung onpiano, Martin Wind on bass, and DennisMackrel on drums, satisfies his yearning,as he puts it, "to get out there and swingjazz tunes with a conventional band, rather than the quartets with three tubaslike I've had."

The album begins with Scott thriceplaying a high-pitched version of the intro-ductory four-note phrase from The Beatles'"And I Love Her." When it's suggested he'splaying falsetto, he begs to differ. "I try notto think of it as falsetto, I don't want tohave any 'false' in it," he says. "I want purenotes, clean and beautiful. I figured out myown system for playing that high on tenorway back when I was in high school." Andjust as he incorporates all the instrumentshe plays into his solo symphony, he incor-porates all the registers available into histenor sax playing.

Scott Robinson's quartet fromTenormore will play Birdland TheaterJune 21-22.

University seminar, "Meet Me at theCrossroad." She also appeared at a numberJALC concerts, including Count MeetsDuke, in 2017; Black, Brown and Beige, the Best of Basie and the Ever FonkyLowdown, in 2018. "That place has reallycreated a situation for me as an artist, where it continues to give me something tolive for, and that has been invaluable tome," Brianna says.

What is intriguing about her career isthat, in an era where the managerial infra-structure is often more responsible forartists' success than the merits of their tal-ent, Brianna has been able to build a solidreputation the old-fashioned way: via jamsessions, gigs, auditions, and by simplybeing in the right place at the right time."When somebody calls you and they say,'You know, we hear you on this [gig], andwe want you to do that,' I just feel blessedand fortunate," she says. "And every timeit's been something that has helped me tosee myself in a different way, and how Ienvision myself."

Gene Perla had a gig at the West Bank Cafe at 42nd St & 9th Av, NYC. He stopped infront of the club, unloaded his double-bass and amp and placed them just inside the frontdoor and then moved his car half a block away to a parking lot. At the end of the gig he didthe reverse and headed to another gig at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

He told me, "When I opened the hatchback I experienced a feeling I had never felt beforein my life or since. I had left my instruments inside the club's front door! Fortunately, I hadmy electric bass to do the gig with, and then drove back into New York to pick up my stuff."Which, fortunately, was still there.

THE TRUMPETER, FLUGELHOR-nist and tireless impresario Mark

Morganelli will celebrate his 40thanniversary as a jazz presenter and per-fofof rmer on June 29. Decades ago, his JazzForum was a celebrated part of the loftftfscene in and around Cooper Square, and isnow a Westchester County hot spot. Therehave been many other milestones: 22 yearsof producing concerts in Tarrytown and 34years since he came ashore frfrf om a river-boat and began putting on events at theRiverArts Festival.

For Mark, however, this month will bespecial fofof r another reason. Not long ago hetook out his Kanstul flflf ugelhorn, polished itto perfefef ction, reconnected with his prodi-gious chops and led a brilliant ensemble inmaking an epic tribute to Brazil. The coun-try has been a musical inspiration fofof ralmost as long as he has been playing pro-fefef ssionally. "I've been what you might callrestless fofof r quite a while," he says, "Ithought it was high time to play my hornagain, just like I did when I fifif rst hooked upwith the late genius Guilherme Franco.

"Guilherme may not have introducedme to Brazilian music, but my love fofof rbossa nova, the samba and maracatu dededbaque viradodod caught fifif re when he and Ibegan playing together in 1980," Markrecalls. "We were joined by Cliftftf onAnderson, Joe Ford and others. In fafaf ct, theexperience was so intoxicating that we con-tinued to play together fofof r a decade ormore, in clubs and on the riverboat inCentral Park—j—j— ust about everywhere! Iwas happily afffff lflf icted by the Brazilian bug."

The flflf ugelhorn seems a perfefef ct tool withwhich to sculpt the long, sensuous lines ofthe 27 songs on Brasil! (Jazz ForumRecords), his double CD with the JazzForum All-Stars. The all-Brazilian ensem-ble includes veterans such as the leg-endary guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima,bassist Nilson Matta, percussion coloristNanny Assis, drummer Adriano Santos,

vocalists Eddie Monteiro and MonikaOliveira, plus a relative newcomer: thesensational pianist-vocalist AbelitaMateus. The players perfofof rm in breathtak-ing ensemble, soloing oftftf en, but it is Markwho is the lead voice, seductively bendingand twisting notes on his burnished horn.

"I was smitten with the trumpet," Markconfefef sses, "When I fifif rst heard guys likeHerb Alpert, Doc Severinsen… and I fefef llin love with jazz—especially Al Hirt andthe music of New Orleans: Wow! It seemslike a lifefef time since I played at Montreux(1976), then traveled around Europe espe-cially Poland (1979) and elsewhere, laterRio aftftf er the Carnaval (1988). I think I'vecome fufuf ll circle now. I have discovered ahealthy diet of producing music andarranging and playing the music I holdclose to my heart. With my horns and withmusicians whom I love, we play the musicwe all adore: jazz, bossa nova, samba andother Brazilian idioms." And Mark's musicsays it all: por amor à música.

Mark Morganelli and the JazzForum All-Stars will celebrate therelease of Brasasa il! at Zinc Bar June 25.
