After growing up in Los Angels, Ca, Marshall Lubin circumnavigated the planet from age 17-19 in the mid 60’s.

He spent two years traveling around South America in the early 70’s. Two more years traveling around Mexico, he then decided to settle down; he joined the Navy (not to see the world) where Marshall worked at Seal Team One in Coronado, CA. Marshall was a member of Hi-Noon Ro-tary in Carlsbad, ascending to the Presi-dency in 1992-93. Marshall is a Paul Harris Fellow. Club members were treated to the “Vienna Boys Choir” like voices of the Peter Rullan 4. Made up of Steve Miesen, Peter Rullan, Rich Freeman, and Scott Vinson, these fab 4 did their rendition of “It’s a Hard Days Night”. Led by Peter on guitar and Joan Kurland dis-tancing her self on piano, the group was able to both entertain and provide comic relief at Friday’s meeting. Performances like this were promised in the future. We can hardly wait.

New member, Gwen Pierce, assisted Gary Bryant at working the “Welcome Table” during Friday’s Meeting. Gwen always has a great smile and positive attitude. Welcome us !!! We Welcome you Gwen !!!

Guiding Principles of Rotary

The Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical stan-dards in business and profes-sions, the recognition of the wor-thiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotar-ian’s occupation as an opportu-nity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Mission The mission of Rotary

International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. The Four-Way Test

The test which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:

Of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Who is Julie Schardin? Rotarian of the Week

Julie Schardin Classification; Marketing/Social Services

Chula Vista Nature Center

Last Week Continued

Julie has been married to my husband Dan for 25 years. They have two children, twelve year old twins Sophie and Walker who attend High Tech High Middle School in Chula Vista. Julie and her family spend lots of time in nature. They love spending time at the beach and in the ocean. Their home is a mini -zoo/curiosity shop of fish, crested geckos, snake, tarantulas and a cat named "Olive." For fun, Julie paints, and make jewelry along with enjoying all sorts of craft projects.... when she is not working on Nature Center stuff. Her main goal is to do the best job I can in helping to raise well-adjusted, healthy and productive kids who want to be a part of their community and to help make it better. Future Rotarians, She hopes! Julie looks forward to being part of the Rotary family and share her time and talent in the great work the CV club does. Her personal mission statement: Julie says if she had one, it might be something like .... "Any job worth doing is worth doing well." My kids really get sick of hearing this. But, it applies to most any-thing in life.

Welcome to the Club Julie, It’s great to have you involved !

SPREAD THE WORD —- INVITE SOMEONE TO JOIN ROTARY

TROY RAY, MEMBERSHIP CHAIR, REMINDS YOU TO:

Are you wearing your Rotary Pin ?

Marty Adler, Card Shark ! Was recognized for winning the recent CV Rotary “1st Annual Texas Hold ‘em Tournament this past week. His winnings included $100 in cash prize and a wide screen TV set. Marty donated the $100 back to the club.

Peter Rullan, Building Hobbyist, was recognized by President Lisa for the ongoing story of his home remodel. When quizzed as to how long this has been going on, Peter responded that they just got the final sign-off this past week. It only took 4 years !! Peter asked those present, “What wrong with that, isn’t that how long it usually takes?”

“Collector of all News of Interest,” our own Jim Biddle once again enlightened the Club on the current events in presenting the “News at Noon”. Be it political, social, local, state, or national, or the Dow industrial, Jim brings the news to life and how it relates to each of us. Not sure how the Sports angle always finds it’s way into Jim’s presentation, but, somehow it’s followed by the daily price of oil. This week even our guest speaker was informed on how his college team compared.

Dency Souval, presented the flag she exchanged for one of our own while visiting Spokane and Seattle Washington and making up at the Spokane North Rotary Club. A club, that Dency says, Michael Monaco has never seen. Dency went on to say that a lot of people looked like Michael up there. Michael related that he has an extended family and it’s Big there and that his dad was also born there. Lisa reminded members when doing make-ups to exchange a flag ! at Clubs our members might not have made up there before.

Alma Villarruel was helped in celebrating her birthday, coming up on the 21st with a rousing rendition of the “Happy Birthday” Song.

Lisa noted that the Rotary Choir was singing more in harmony each week.

Happy Birthday Alma !

C.V. Rotary joins Chula Vista Charitable Foundation. Lisa & Brad presented a Rotary Check for $5,000 to Mayor Cox and our own Dency Souval, who is Chair of the CV Charitable Foundation, mak-ing the Rotary Club of Chula Vista a founding member of the Foundation. Mayor Cox thanked the Rotary Membership for knowing what philan-thropy really is and how much our participation benefits locally.

SECRET GREETER

. Wear your Rotary pin. Wear your Rotary pin with pride. Wear that Rotary pin all the time, not just for Ro-tary meetings. Why? What’s in a pin? What’s in a symbol? The definition of sym-

bol is: “something used for or regarded as representing something else; a material ob-ject representing something, often some-thing immaterial; emblem, token, or sign.” So, that’s what’s in a Rotary pin…or shirt, tie, scarf, bumper sticker, or even a tattoo (does Michael really have one?). So basi-cally we can say that a symbol, in this case our Rotary pin, is a tangible representing an intangible. I personally take great pride in putting on my Rotary pin each day. I am proud because not everyone gets to do that. Your external Rotary symbol, however you choose to demonstrate that, represents your internal commitment to our organization and its mission, much like a wedding band represents your commitment to your partner and the institution of marriage. What do you think when you see a Rotary pin on a stranger? Well, for me, the irony is that, even though I may not know the indi-vidual, I don’t consider them a stranger be-cause we have an instant connection. I know something about them before I even know their name. I know someone wearing a Rotary symbol believes as I do, in ‘service above self.’ I know they are committed to the ideals and values of our organization. They are committed to helping their com-munity and the world be a stronger, better place for all.

A few of you tell me, regardless of occa-sional ‘pin checks’ at our meetings, you just aren’t the ‘symbol wearing’ type of person. That’s ok. I respect each of you and your individuality. Should you choose not to wear a pin at meetings or other times, that is a personal choice. We should all just re-member that we earn that pin by being eli-gible for membership in one of the strong-est volunteer organizations in the world. The most important mark of a Rotarian is really in our hearts – not demonstrated by what we wear. At one of our upcoming meetings (I’ll give you plenty of notice) it will be ‘Rotary-wear’ day. Start now digging out those shirts, ties, jackets, ball caps, belt buckles, and briefs (if you wear them we’ll take your word for it). If you’ve misplaced your pin, see Jerry May as he always has a supply for sale. Regardless of what you wear every other day, I know you all demonstrate your Rotary pride in many ways. I see that all the time and it’s heartwarming. I still have to say, “Please wear those pins.” They are a great way to start conversations and tell others about Rotary; and they are a great way to make an instant acquaintance of a fellow Rotarian anywhere in the world.

City Councilman, Rudy Ramirez, announces that he is a Chula Vista Rotary Member. Those in attendance at the 1st Friday Chamber Breakfast were amazed at Ramirez’s remark but, none so much as his fellow Kiwanis Members. Rudy went to correct himself by say-ing he got caught up in the “moment” by sitting around so many other Rotarians during the announcement section of the morning meeting this past Friday. Never to be a loss of action, Rotary Member, Gary Bryant jumped to his feet and handed Rudy an invitation to attend the Rotary Meeting, Friday at Noon. Gee Rudy, We’re sorry you didn’t show up ! It was a good lunch.

/ Reported by Dick Slaker As instructed, I am forwarding to you a ‘brief’ report on our beautiful weather day as we left Chula Vista In our 14 pas‐senger bus with our Tour Guide Isaias Flores that headed towards the Mexican Border of Tijuana. Crossing the border we drove along the Pacific Ocean pass‐ing some newly built condos , hotels, etc., however, there were many still many that had stopped construction . Sad. Edith thought she might like to buy one of the luxury con‐dos for a second home. ……………some day! We arrived at the Rosarito Beach Hotel to view the prop‐erty , plus bathroom stop. It was too bad that we didn’t plan to overnight at the Rosarito Beach, I could have asked my friends at the hotel for a special rate and had the op‐portunity to watch and listen to the 1st Rosarito Interna‐tional Mariachi& Folklorico Festival which included Mexico vs. USA Competition. Perhaps next year this might be an exciting weekend to enjoy the music, food and the friendli‐ness of the host country, Mexico. Continuing on we headed East through the Gua‐dalupe Valley pass‐ing many hills and valleys , small towns and vil‐lages. To bad we didn’t think about taking Larry’s used eye glasses as we could have found a village that could have used his eye glasses by finding a Rotary Club or Church that could distribute them. Again, perhaps next year. We finally arrived at L.A. Cetto winery as we were greeted with other groups doing the same, learning more about the wines of Guadalupe Valley. We took a walking tour

past the hillsides of grapes as they are collected and har‐vested into large con‐tainers, which then are crushed , sepa‐rated and finally placed in the huge wooded barrels for

fermenta‐tion. We asked about purchas‐ing some of these barrels for future Chula Vista Rotary Club Wine Taste. Lourdes was thinking about using

them to advertise with her bank. After the tour we headed back to the reception area where the real fun began with our guide sharing with us the types of red and white wines and the

years it takes to make them. After 8‐10 glass of wines, most of our team branched out to buy Olive Oil and bot‐tles of wine. Gus bought us a plate of cheese and bread to help with the drinking of wine. I think Gloria pur‐

chased the most as she needed a box to carry her bottles. After an hour we had to move out to visit our second winery, called La Casa De Dona Lupe. A small but effect win‐ery with more wine

sampling and tasting very good. Our guide Isaias pur‐chased us two large platters of small pieces of pizzas along with more bread that really hit the spot , again, with our 4‐5 more wine tasting glasses. Finishing our wine and bread/pizza, we stum‐bled back to the Van to continue our journey towards Ensenada where lunch was awaiting us. We were offered so many different menus to decide which we would like to have. Again Lourdes was our ‘shrimp queen’, who had to wait the longest for her lunch while the majority enjoyed their Mexican Lunch Special a full plate of beans, tacos, enchilada and rice along with gua‐camole and tamale and more.

Naturally we all had to have either a Margarita, XX Beer and some needed coffee about this time. We were right in the center of En‐senada and had time to doing more serious shopping for tequila, medicine, gifts, etc. after eating. However, Gloria and Lourdes were

the two musical queens who loved to sing and almost dance for us, as we were serenaded with two musi‐cians, and then Lourdes ne‐gotiated with a 6 band group of dressed Mariachis who spent about 30 minutes sere‐nading us with many Mexican folk music, quite a treat. Yes, Lourdes, Alma, Gloria and Edith all got into the act with their musical back‐ground. Was a fun way to have a luncheon. About 4 PM, it was time to head back to the border and

zoom off to Tijuana , how‐ever, much to our sur‐prise, the bus line had about 15 large buses ahead of us, and we de‐cided to try our luck at the Otay Crossing, which al‐lowed us to cross in 15 minutes, good choice. Sadly we arrived back at the golf course sharing our thanks to our guide Isaias Flores for making our trip a fun and enjoyable day. Those in attendance: David Hoffman (2), Alma (4), Zozimo, (1), Lourdes (2), Edith (1), Gus (1), Duane (2) , Dick (1) filling the van. For all my good friends , let me share with you to recommend any future trips to Baja consider to contact Isaias Flores for any trip, charter for visiting Tijuana, Ensenada, Blowhole, Fish‐ing Trips, Wineries, Custom Tours, airport transfers he is easily contacted and licensed & insured in both Mexico & USA. This is important. GOBAJAEASY Tours & Charters. 619‐819‐9173 or toll free at 1‐866 691 1985 . Check www.gobajaeasy.com. His main office is at the Rosarito Beach Hotel. He is planning for the future special 2‐3 night Baja Ad‐ventures which would include kayaking trips.

Lourdes, after we departed, I visited the Chula Vista Golf Course to say Hello to my two favorite wait‐resses when I ran into Martha Estrada with the Fourth Avenue Bank. They were there helping with a big fund raising event. Surprise, as I told her we just

saw at the Otay Crossing, First Bank. Well Suzanne, having a 35 passenger bus would have created that much more fun as everyone got swept up with the fun

trip, a learning trip and perhaps later, a return trip to visit other and different wineries. I will find out for next year when they hold #2. Rosarito Mariachi Festi‐val, this would be another winner. A bit of information Suzanne, Alma, was another big buyer as she brought along a super large extra bag to carry her pur‐chases and brought 4 guests to join us plus pur‐chased a huge map of Baja, check it out.. Congratulations to Duane for making the effort to keep in touch with me regarding those coming plus handling the ‘high finances’, even with Edith aboard. Was nice meeting Zozimo even though he doesn’t have a computer to keep in touch. Finally, thank you Suzy, as you know, it was a learning situation and perhaps next year , with Wine Master Mike, we might continue to make this a Rotary High‐light for the year, connecting with the Rotary Club of Rosarito Beach. Working with Isaias and the hotel would be the ‘perfect’ combination. We would have dinner in Hotel Rosarito Beach’s Chabert’s Restau‐rant. Truly elegant. Submitted by: .
