Vicars Letter
The Vicarage, Langworth Tel. 01522 – 754233
As I prepare to retire from the parishes in the Benefice of Barlings, this will be
my last contribution to the Sudbrooke News. Next month’s issue will cover both
July and August and Rev. Penny Green who takes over from me will be occupy-
ing this space. She will be known to some of you as she is already in post at
South Lawres and lives at Cherry Willingham. Later in the year, it is proposed
that their 4 churches will be combined with the 4 in this benefice. My official
retirement date is 30th September, but I will be taking my last services on 25th
August so I can use my final month to sort out transferring paperwork and pre-
paring to move from the vicarage.
As we ‘downsize’ in readiness for the move, I come across papers recording
various events over different periods of time. Many bring back happy memo-
ries, but there are some sad ones too. Rudyard Kipling’s words in his poem “If”
have always been a favourite with me, especially the couplet “If you can meet
with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two imposters just the same.”
Incumbents come and go – in a sense “Here today, and gone tomorrow” people
– just ministers in a long line of succession stretching back across the centu-
ries. It is the Church Wardens and Parochial Church Council who are the real
continuity – and during my time here I have been blessed with the highest
quality of folk in these roles. Thank you all who have served in them.
Also, thank you all for the privilege of being your Rector for the past years, and
may God bless you as you enter the brave new world of being part of a larger
grouping. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers, as - like the old
soldier of the early 20th century popular song who does not die but “simply
fades away” – I will simply fade away at the end of the Summer.
Thank you for the memories.
Yours, in Christ, Robert Spaight

Hello and welcome to more Gardening News. The sun was shining when I first
sat down to write, but it has now become gloomy and wet again - more April
showers? Even though it is now May, the weather is still very unsettled. It is
very difficult to make any progress in the garden.
In the front garden most plants have recovered and are doing well. However,
the Quince (Chaenomoles) which would normally start to bloom in late January
was delayed until early May, when it eventually burst into bloom and is still cov-
ered in beautiful red blossom. One casualty is our Salix Tortuosa, which has
come into leaf with an overbalanced one-sided effect. This will be given some
serious consideration before Autumn treatment. The wall baskets along the
front of the property which contain winter pansies were very slow to come to
life but a good feed made a big difference to their performance. They should
hold until the end of May when the summer bedding plants will be ready to re-
place them.
The greenhouse is full of bedding plants which will be transferred to cold frames
to harden off before being placed out into the wall baskets at the front house
and into pots in the gravelled area in the back garden. These pots have been
brought out from their winter quarters and are doing well, in particular four
pots of Lewisia, and eight different Hostas, three of which are miniature varie-
ties.
The polytunnel has been cleared ready for the grafted tomatoes and cucumbers
when they arrive. The shrubbery area has been gradually cleared as and when
weather permitted, and several new shrubs have now been planted. These in-
clude Magnolia, Rhododendron, Spiraea, Photinia, two Buddleia, Callistemon
(bottle brush). These plants are joining some of the long established plants
which have been kept, such as a Camellia which is over 8ft tall and has
bloomed beautifully this year, a Ribes (flowering currant) a dwarf Lilac and an
Azalea which was already well established in the garden when we moved in
twenty two years ago. This Azalea has lovely scented yellow flowers. At the
opposite end of the shrubbery area is a Laurel which we also inherited and
there are several clumps of Euphorbia. Although the new plants are small and
will take time to fill out the shrubbery, we are pleased with result. It has been
hard work and has meant that some parts of the garden have been neglected.
There is still plenty of work to be done - a never ending battle with ground
elder lasts throughout the whole summer. This has, as always thrived despite
poor weather and this applies also to the mares-tail which is just as trouble-
some.
However we can only hope for more settled weather to come. In the mean-
time, farewell for now.

NETTLEHAM POLICE TEAM Firstly let me introduce myself. I am the new
volunteer Admin. Officer at the Nettleham Village Police
Station. My name is Lynn Chantrey and I have lived in
Langworth for the past 18 years. I am a keen biker
and can often be seen on my big blue trike, you cannot
miss me as it is the only trike that carries a wheelchair
on the back of it. Since being confined to the chair I
have been looking for work that will keep me out of
trouble. Volunteering at the station seemed to be the right thing for me. The
officers have been very welcoming and I feel part of the team already so be-
cause of this I will now be at the village police station every Tuesday and Thurs-
day from 9 am till 4 pm so if you want to pop in with any problems or just for a
chat please feel free to do so.
We are pleased to report that crime is low at the moment as there have only
been 4 reported crimes in the last month these have been investigated and
dealt with accordingly.
If you see or here anything suspicious that you would like the Police to hear
about please ring the 101 non emergency number, this number is not instead of
the 999 emergency number, if it is an emergency please ring 999 as usual.
Summer is supposedly here although I am not sure where, but that still doesn’t
stop the grass and hedges growing, with this in mind here are a few tips on
keeping your garden equipment safe from sticky fingers.
• Think about upgrading your security on the garden shed, better
locks, or a bar across the door.
• Make sure you put everything away at night.
• Think about post coding your items, Nettleham NPT offer a free
post coding service.
• Most criminals like to look in the daylight to see what you have got
then come back at night, so covering the windows of the shed is
also an option, what they can’t see they can’t get.
If you want to want to keep up to date with local news and crime please visit
them on Twitter and Facebook. The team also have an Email address for you to

The Old Codger................
In general I find most regional country accents
pleasant and they give a bit of character to the
speaker and add weight to whatever is being
related whether it is a story or description of
something. Before TV became so popular al-
most every part of the country had it's own
accent and an expert could at once identify
from where in the UK the speaker originated .
(Mind you even an expert could be wrong. We
all remember The Yorkshire Ripper tapes and
boy did the expert get that one wrong !?).
The early days of TV had Ena Sharples and all
the cast of Coronation Street speaking in a
broad Yorkshire accent, as did the characters in Emerdale Farm as it was called
then. But over time all those accents seem to have been watered down and dis-
appeared and even these two very regional TV shows have lost their
verbal identity and so have people all over the country.
Our children today do not speak in the broad accents of our grandparents.
Certainly not in this area anyway. Some parts of the country have retained
watered down versions of accents, but nowhere near as strong as they were
fifty years ago. It is still possible to identity a Geordie, a Liverpudlian, Welsh-
man, Devonian, Yorkshireman or Scotsman by his accent and be reasonably
sure of an East Anglian. But try to pick out those who come from the south of
England and you will have much more difficulty and may well find it impossible
to pin down a location. There seems to be an opinion of those seeking to
achieve success in today's world that accents are out and it is better not to
have one.
There are however, some accents that positively irritate me. The Glaswegian
one for a start. I love the plots of "Taggart " that Scottish detective series on
TV but I am always two words behind the speaker trying to translate what they
have said, especially when they are excited. (Perhaps they could provide sub
titles ). In general I love the Scots accent and it is a fact that very many of the
best English teachers hail from Scotland (Miss Jean Brodie springs to mind).
Am I alone in detesting the French accent ?. Some ladies find the smarmy
voice of Charles Hasnovoice or Maurice Chevalier pleasant and sensual but like
Winston Churchill said of Charles de Gaulle. "I find myself irritated the mo-
ment he opens his mouth" .... mind you, I feel slightly more appreciative of the
accent when Edith Piaf sings ....can't think why ??. (My wife has just grunted
disapprovingly).
The Cockney accent as spoken by Barbara Windsor in particular and by several

Potholes
Lincolnshire County Council has a statutory duty to maintain adopted roads and
paths (the Highway) within the County. Maintenance of the highway includes making
safe potentially dangerous defect such as potholes.

male actors always seem to be put on for effect and grates. In general London-
ers do not sound like that. As for that ridiculous "Rhyming Slang "that is sup-
posedly understood and used by all native Londoners from birth it is a myth !
Why else is it necessary to follow each uttered phrase with it's translation i.e.
Titfer tat ...Hat ....Apples and pears ...Stairs ..Syrup of figs ...Wig ..Jam
Jar ..Car....No !! it's a myth. They try to tell you that it was invented years ago
to fool the supervisors on the London Docks. What a load of cobblers !...I don't
have to translate that do I ?
I keep my ear to the ground !...Especially after I fall over after a few
pints .
I keep being told I am a nobody ...Well nobody is perfect ..So I am
perfect !!
Do you realise that in two days time tomorrow will be yesterday !.
I'm getting on a bit now. My short term memory is not as sharp as it
used to be !.

ELLISON BOULTERS CE ACADEMY
Football Team LCFC Stand Up Speak Up Tournament Champions 2013 Saturday 20 April 2013
Game 1 Vs Bishop King
The team started the tournament quickly
going 1-0 up through some fantastic one
touch football following a throw-in. Ben G was on hand to finish the move with
a half-volley from just outside the box. Ellison Boulters domi-
nated possession and showered the opposition goal with plenty of shots only to
see the ‘keeper in great form. In the final minutes, Bishop King scored from a
long goal-kick which travelled behind our defence, who were caught on the
wrong side, and the opposition striker tucked the ball under the on-rushing goal
keeper.
Final score: 1-1
Game 2 Vs SUSU Representative Team
With the knowledge that the team would have to win their remaining games
and qualification potentially resting on goal difference, Ellison Boulters started
the game quickly, going up 3-0 inside the first 3 minutes through Oliver W, Jo-
seph S and Ravi Y-P. Again the opposition ‘keeper pulled off some fantastic
saves as Ellison Boulters controlled possession. As the game passed Ravi Y-P,
Joseph S and Hugo N(2) would score again to ensure an emphatic win. At the
other end, Ruari N had a fantastic game ensuring that Mason H was a spectator
in goal.
Final score: 7-0
Game 3 Vs Monks Abbey
Having heard that Bishop King had drawn with Monks Abbey in the previous
game, Ellison Boulters knew that a win would see them clinch the coveted first
place in the table and a place in the tournament final. Again, Ellison Boulters
started brightly with three shots on goal, however Mason H at the other end
pulled off a couple of magnificent saves to keep the game goalless. Then came
the telling moment when after a corner, a shot on goal from Ellison Boulters
was handled by a Monks Abbey player inside the box. The referee blew straight
away for a penalty and up stepped the captain, Joseph S who struck the ball
June 2013 Page 23 http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Sudbrooke/
hard and straight as it came off the underside of the bar and nestled in the
back of the net leaving the ‘keeper helpless. With this goal Ellison Boulters grew
in confidence and dominated the game scoring another through Ravi Y-P on the
counter-attack. In the closing stages, a couple of timely interceptions and tack-
les meant that Ellison Boulters kept another clean sheet.
Final score: 2-0 Final Vs St. Faith & St. Martin
After scouting the opposition in their final game, Ellison Boulters knew that a
disciplined and tactical display would see them lift the cup. Every player gave
100% chasing and harrying, not giving St Faith’s a second on the ball. Once
again Ellison Boulters kept possession and pressed the opposition high up the
pitch limiting them to long range shots. Halfway through the game a goal kick
from Joseph S bounced into the opposition area where a deft flick from Ben G
saw the ball loop over the stranded ‘keeper and into the back of the net. From
there on the pressure came but Ellison Boulters remained resilient with Mason H
tipping a long range shot over the top of the bar and showing a safe pair of
hands. Ellison Boulters closed out the game sensibly taking their time and
keeping possession. A counter attack in the closing moments would have seen
Ellison Boulters score again, however the chance went just wide. Ellison Boul-
ters celebrated the victory and their tournament win with the captain lifting the
trophy.
Final score: 1-0
Squad: Mason H, Ben W, Ruari N, Oliver W, Joseph S, Ben G, Anton M, Ravi Y-P & Hugo N

May meeting. A dry interval between heavy showers allowed
members to wander around the garden and
orchard of hosts Mike and Margaret Halliday.
Unusually for the time of year there were
many daffodils and tulips in full bloom.
Most of the fruit trees and flowering cherry
trees were laden with blossom but as with last
year the cold wet weather is deterring the pol-
linators.
The non- cultivated areas of land were awash
with cowslips, some of which had hybridized
into different petal shapes and colours.
The vegetable patch and soft fruit beds were struggling compared to a ‘normal’
year.
A closely contested quiz was won by Sheila and Mike Cannon, Margaret Halliday
and Barry Reeves.
Next meeting Monday 10th June. Will be hosted by David and Sandy Bowles at Stonebrooke House, 46, Scothern
Lane from 7-30 pm.

The group offers emergency care and Basic Life Support in Stainton, Scothern,
Langworth and Sudbrooke. We are called out by dialling 999 in an emergency and care
can begin before an ambulance arrives because we are based locally in your area.
We are grateful to I Gas, who have given us a grant from their Community Fund. This

Thanks go to local businesses which hold our collecting tins. These are an essential part
of the fund raising which keeps the group going and helps to pay for training and
equipment. Donations from local organisations are also gratefully received. Thanks also
to The Bottle and Glass and Lakeside for the use of a room for our meetings.
The group can also provide First Aid cover for events in the community. If you need
First Aid cover for your event please contact the Co-ordinator.
We currently have eight qualified responders. We are always seeking new members to
train as Responders and also support members. You can apply if you are aged 18 or

Pass ‘Go’ and collect £500!
West Lindsey District Council is re-launching the Community Action and
Volunteering Fund (CAV Fund) under a new name and with more cash up
for grabs!
The Community Chest Fund enables groups in West Lindsey to apply for
up to £500 to help them with their local projects; previously the maximum
was £250.
Areas who are developing a community plan or implementing actions from
a current community plan can apply for up to £1,000 to help with this.
A Community Led Plan (sometimes known as a Parish Plan) sets out a
shared vision for the community and identifies the action needed to
achieve it.
So far the CAV Fund, administered by Community Lincs, has helped more
than 100 projects and supported around 1,200 volunteers in its first year.
The projects have been wide-ranging from village notice boards, to sports
kit, to youth activities and community gardens. Treasurer and secretary
of the Market Rasen Station Adoption Group, Martin Barnard, is delighted
at how the grant made it possible to support a local art group and make a
real difference to the look and feel of Market Rasen station.
He said: "We were delighted with how easy it was to apply, how smooth
the process was and with the helpful and supportive approach of the peo-
ple in the West Lindsey CAV team.
"It was so straightforward and beneficial that we have already applied for
a further grant."
The Community Chest fund will be available from the 1st May 2013.
If you would like to apply for funding please phone: 01529 301951
Alternatively email: [email protected]

Welton Family Health Centre
Recent changes within the NHS will gradually start to have an effect on Primary
Care Services as some services that have routinely been provided by GP prac-
tices will be forced to go through a tendering process and practices will be put-
ting in bids for such services alongside various private provider companies. We
are already aware that INR (anticoagulation clinic) services will be one of the
first services and we understand that others will follow later this year. Obvi-
ously, our Practice will be submitting bids to retain as many services locally as
possible for patients and in an effort to safeguard the future of general practice,
many Lincolnshire doctors have formed a federation who will also be bidding for
some of these services, called LADMS.
This raises the inevitable question of conflict of interest and undoubtedly there
will be some, but those doctors in our Practice who have joined LADMS are
keen to declare their interests and any other potential interests have been re-
ported back to the Clinical Commissioning Group in an effort to be open and
transparent. Whilst private companies have a responsibility to their sharehold-
ers and the overall aim is to make profit, our interests are preserving NHS ser-
vices locally, and not profit generation. We are obviously concerned that if pri-
vate providers do “cherry pick” some of our services, if profit is not forthcoming
then those services could quickly disappear and leave patients with no services
locally.
Please could patients be aware that requests for repeat prescriptions require
two working days to be processed. Therefore any requests made (whether in
person, on the telephone, email or answer machine) after 5.30 pm on a Friday
will not be ready for collection until
Wednesday. If you require a prescrip-
tion urgently, please contact the dis-
pensary staff directly.
If you are planning a trip abroad this
summer and would like advice on vacci-
nations, please complete one of our
holiday vaccination forms at least 6
weeks before travel, where possible.
Forms are available from Reception and

Has summer finally arrived? We’ve had a few lovely days so let’s hope we get a
few more before autumn creeps in!
Speaking of autumn our next event will be the Autumn Fayre which will be held
on Saturday 12th October in Welton Village Hall commencing at 2pm.
There will be all of the usual attraction- raffle, tombola, cake stall, bric a brac
and books plus prize games to take part in and a large variety of stalls selling
crafts, toiletries, art work etc.
If anyone is interested in hiring a table, at a cost of £5, to sell their own items,
please contact Roy Minnitt (860980) or myself (862570) to add your name to
the list. We will aim to get a good variety of sale items and will notify you dur-
ing August if your request to hire a table has been successful.
We will be collecting donations of bric a brac, books, tombola items etc nearer
the time. Please let me know if you are unable to deliver them to the hall on the
morning of the 12th and I will arrange collection. Any donations for the bottle
and glass tombola would also be welcome and we would also like any ‘in date’
grocery items to guess the value of the shopping trolley contents.
There will be more information in the July edition of the magazine.
Our new system of fixed price charging for transport to the Health Centre
seems to have been well received. If you have a comment, either good or bad,
about these changes please inform the Health Centre staff or any driver who
will pass the message on to me.

Patient Participation Group and Voluntary Driver Scheme
We are still welcoming patients who wish to join our Virtual Patient Reference
Group (PRG). The purpose of this is to have a large group of patients that the

If you are interested then please complete one of the join up forms at reception
or contact Sarah Liron at the practice for more details.
Our second local patient participation report is now available to read on our
website. The report displays the results of the survey which was undertaken by
our PPG in the waiting rooms at the practice and also by member of our PRG.

At the present moment we have sufficient cover in most villages we service but
are in need of volunteer drivers at Nettleham.
If you are interested, please leave your contact details with one of the recep-

the finer points of the scheme.

IT Hi Folks,
This month:
Building
Your Own
PC—7
You now have your completed list of
hardware, added your chosen software,
found the cheapest places to buy, or-
dered what you need, and the pile of
parts is now sitting on and around your
kitchen table in shiny boxes. Your
adrenaline starts flowing , your heart’s
beating fast and you’re thinking
- Where on Earth do I start?
Well, this is how it all goes to-
gether but wait….. I hope you
remember the first few articles
in this series. You must, absolutely
must, take anti-static precautions be-
fore you take any of the parts out of
their boxes—static is a killer of elec-
tronic components so play safe. Also,
place a covering on the table to avoid
scratches and other damage. Read the
documents that come with each compo-
nent; always follow the instructions as
manufacturers know their products
best and fitting is often unique to that
particular item. Use the Internet to re-
search and review fitting of similar
items by other people; they can discuss
various tips and tricks that
will help you. It’s a good idea to
make a ‘map’ of the way in which com-
ponents will be connected to the system
board. Remember also that system
boards often come with the battery pre-
fitted so there is already power, albeit
very small, flowing through the cir-
cuits. Handle the system board by the
sides wherever possible and avoid the
possibility of touching, and therefore
short-circuiting, components. It’s a
good idea to use protective latex gloves
when handing any electronic compo-
nents. Wherever possible, assemble the
parts outside of the main computer
case to ensure ample room for fingers
and tools. You may also find that some
items, once fitted to the system board,
may obscure the screw holes that fit the
system board to the case. Many cases
can fit various sizes of system board so
check which fittings/layout you need to
use. There are usually 6 or 9 holes on
the system board that will align with
holes on the case chassis. Stand-offs, or
posts, are provided which keep the sys-
tem board raised from the case chassis
to avoid short-circuits so fit these now.

The Camera Club has 2 events during
June, our first event is on the 13th June
when we will be having our “Whisby
Wander” this night will be a night out at
the Whisby Nature Reserve so exer-
cise and taking pictures all good things
combined. I must admit that one of the
advantages of being an amateur pho-
tographer is that whilst you are out
looking for the images of your choice it
also acts as a source of good exercise. I
recently visited Whisby during the day
and walked for about 2 hours, I didn’t
take many pictures but certainly had a
very long walk.
Our second meeting will be back at the club house at The Old School Dunholme
when we will be viewing the images from all of the clubs in Lincolnshire and
choosing the top 3. This is a fairly relaxed night where the members can dis-
cuss the images over a cup of tea and then finally make their choice of their
favourite 3 images. So if you would like to come down and meet us all on a
night when you can ask what we do? When we do it and how we do it then this
is the night to drop in and share an evening with us.
The Camera Club is there for the community if you are reading this then you
are part of that community, if you have an interest in taking better pictures
then come to a few of the meetings and find out how we can help you. We
cover a variety of topics during the year so either drop me a line, make a phone
call or just come along to one of our meetings at The Old School Dunholme.
