Who is this Jesus?
The way John begins his account of the life of Jesus is significant. He doesn’t quietly slip up on us as if he were trying to conceal what he is doing. Rather, he states right up front facts about Jesus that he wants us to see, to see the evidence for and to believe.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” John 1:1-5 (NIV)
Notice also that John does not begin with the easiest matters and then slowly work up toward the more difficult. He does not make statements of universal acceptance and then move on to more controversial topics. No! John storms up the sidewalk, as it were, bangs on the front door of our hearts and immediately confronts us with the most demanding and potentially divisive message ever proclaimed! Who is this Jesus?
John knows. He had seen Jesus and heard His message for over three years as he traveled throughout Palestine with Him. He has devoted his life since the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus to proclaiming the message he now records for our reading and consideration. He’s not alone, others were also eye and ear witnesses and have also devoted their lives to proclaiming the message that Jesus is the Son of God. Regarding this he says,
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word if life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:1-3 (NIV)
Last Sunday morning we examined the importance of each one of us having our own personal faith in Christ through our own encounter with Jesus, His claims and the evidence that demonstrates the truth of His identity as the Son of God. This coming Sunday we will begin the journey of faith set forth by John in his account of Jesus’ life and teaching. He starts in immediately with the identity of Jesus as the Son of God. He challenges us to begin and continue serious deliberation of the question: “Who is this Jesus?”
What’s your answer? Have you evaluated the evidence? Let’s come together and begin to examine the evidence John presents before us.

I wish each of you the best year ever in 2014.
WEDNESDAY AM LBC: Ladies’ Bible class will resume
on Wednesday the 8th at 10:00 in
Room 110. The lesson will begin on
page 53 in the book, discussing "The
Beatitudes" from Matthew 5:1-12.
WINGS: The first meeting of the year will be on Thurs-
day January 9th at 6 PM at the
fellowship room. Bring your favorite
dish for the potluck meal. The
project after the meal will be to
make diapers for Honduras from
t-shirts.
Allow me to share an excerpt from an article on page
51 in the Christian Woman Magazine (Jan/Feb 2014
issue). The title is “My GPS Must Be Broken,” by
Bridgette Wildes.
“How in the world did I
end up here? I ask myself
that all the time. Don’t get
me wrong. I love the ‘here’
that I find myself in.
However, it has been a
road complete with bumps, detours and lots of
potholes. ... Don’t be afraid to try new things. God
places situations, people and even obstacles in your life
for a reason. Don’t be afraid to turn off you GPS and let
God run the show.
You don’t always have to be the map-keeper. It took me
a long time to realize this truth. I held on to the road
map of my life as if it were the instructions to build an
Egyptian pyramid. Who was I kidding? I know nothing
about what directions God will be sending me or where
I will end up down this road called life. I can only click
my seat belt, lock the doors, fill up the gas tank and
hold on!
Just for today, think on this: ‘For I know the plans I
have for you’ declares the Lord, plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a
future.’ Jeremiah 29:11 NIV. Slow down and enjoy
life ...”
Love always, Linda

To my beloved brothers and sisters:
I’m taking this time and method to thank all of you for your
cards, your visits to my home (and to those who left notes on
my front door when away). For the food gifts, your words of
encouragement, and to those who sent very generous gifts in
her honor to various causes, I will always be grateful.
To those who braved the near zero weather for the graveside
service at Tulia and to those who were able to attend the
memorial service for my beloved daughter in Turkey … may our
Lord bless and keep you.
King David said it best — Psalm 31: 9-10 ; 31:14 “O Lord, have
mercy on me in my anguish. My eyes are red from weeping: my
health is broken from sorrow. I am pining away with grief; my
years are shortened, drained away because of sadness.
However, I am trusting you, O Lord, I said “you alone are my
God; my times are in your hands.”

Problems in Life
I know something about you. That’s right. It’s not a secret, so you might as well admit it: you have problems. If you’re a Christian or not: you have problems. In fact, if you are breathing you have problems. The good news (if we can call it that) is
you’re not alone; as everyone goes through times of struggle. Maybe it’s time to move past that problem and start reaching for solutions, learning so you can move on to the next challenge.
I heard someone say once, “The lesson continues until the lesson is learned.” Life is not meant to be lived camping out on Lesson One. Fearing life is too difficult, hiding to avoid problems; life’s supposed to be a grand adventure that involves dreams, struggles, and having victories along the way. The more quickly you solve the current lesson the sooner you can advance to new heights, achieving more results with each progressively higher lesson number.
If you’re going to have problems anyway, my suggestion is to make life interesting by solving a few of them. As you go through life you’ll constantly be gaining new problems, so solve those, too. Gradually and eventually you will begin producing results that you can be proud of. The secret to success lies in your daily habits. A person who lives a life full of victory is someone who solves problems daily. And this produces adventure and results to last an eternity. What are you waiting for? You know your problems, you’ve been telling everyone who will listen all about it. How about starting right now? Get to work solving that problem.
