The next characteristic of spirituality that Paul lists in Galatians 5:22 is peace. A lack of peace is a sure sign that the flesh is winning the battle. Some of the characteristics of the flesh are the antithesis of peace.

“Now the deeds of the flesh are . . . enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions . . . (Gal 5:19-20)”

A fleshly person would have a difficult, if not impossible, task of restoring one in a spirit of gentle-ness, especially when he is prone to disputes and strife. We are to pursue peace with all men. Peace is not limited to the mere absence of strife. In both Greek (eirene) and Hebrew (shalom), peace can mean wholeness and well being.

So to “pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another (Rom 14:19)” is proactive.

It is quite a different thing to merely not stir up strife that it is to actively seek a brother’s well-being. For instance, Jesus taught,

"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not commit murder' . . . But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty . . . Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering (Matt 5:21-24).”

Here, Jesus is teaching us to be proactive. Instead of merely not committing murder, he says to seek out the ones who have something against you and try to work it out. According to this pas-sage, merely being angry or insulting your brother is a sin, and we need to pursue wholeness in our relationships when they have been injured in this way.

Jesus is the supreme example of a peaceful one who reconciled sinners to himself. Even though “we were by nature children of wrath (Eph 2:3),” the Prince of Peace came and made peace with us. Unlike many previous violent visitations of God to his sinful people, Jesus came as the Lamb of God to make peace. Jesus did not come with guns blazing when he ate with sinners and tax col-lectors. He was the great physician who came to heal our relationship with God.

Jesus is the perfect example of what it means to have the spiritual quality of peace when we who are spiritual restore the erring in spirit of gentleness.

Last week I got to watch some baseball and it re-minded me of all the great times that I got to coach in the past. One team that I coached was a girls T-ball team. It was a fun year, teaching the game to many girls that had never played before. If parents want their kids to play baseball and want to get them going at an early age, they will start them with T-ball. T-ball places the ball on a tee and has minimal rules, it’s all about falling in love with the game of baseball. It is for kids generally under the age of six and it teaches them the basic elements of baseball of hitting, running and catching the ball. That’s because, at that age, kids cannot understand all the many rules of baseball. Some of us adults have a hard time with them, from time to time! T-ball allows children to learn until they can comprehend the full experience of the game. This made me think, this is similar to how God has dealt with His people over time. He first gave the people the law in the old testament in order to prepare them for what would later come

through Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:23-28

But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore, the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is nei-

ther male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

We may ask why God didn’t just start with Jesus and the gospel, right after Adam and Eve in the garden, but the truth of the matter is that His people were not ready for it. But now, all has been revealed and we are blessed today to have the full gospel revealed to us. But our Father has brought us up as a

people until we were ready. Have a great week. Todd
