Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time A Scriptural Reflection

What Can You Do?

The crowd wanted to know, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” (John 6:28). They were looking for a way to do miracles, signs, wonders, and they expected Jesus to prove himself by doing this for them, too. They had just witnessed the multiplication of the loaves, yet it seemed not to impress them! They were asking for yet another “sign.” Jesus directed their attention to the meaning of the miracles: God’s loving faithfulness to them in their need. Manna in the desert and loaves in the wilderness were the signs of Jesus’ gift of himself to us in love.

What Jesus was looking for in these people was an attentive heart. He wanted them to see that God was providing for their needs with love and faithfulness, and had always done so. But the people didn’t get it. They had just witnessed a miracle, and yet they still were asking for “a sign.” What counts as a sign? Do we need to be hit over the head? Every day we witness miracles, and yet we don’t really see them, or believe that they really come from God. Every day we are bread for each other, or someone is bread for us, and yet we do not make the connection! No doubt the people in the desert failed to connect the quail and the manna with their crying out to God for food. God answers our prayers and knows our needs, and sends people to us and us to others, and yet we look for other explanations of these “miracles” in our lives.

Believe!

God’s faithful love is shown all around us, every day. We cry out to God, and yet we often explain away God’s answers to our prayers, looking for something more spectacular than merely what we need or even what we have asked for. We have what we need: the Bread of Life.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

We are inviting all parishioners to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to serve at all Sunday Masses, especially at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Please consider this very important

and necessary ministry and volunteer. You must be a registered member of the Parish and have been Confirmed. A new class will take place on:

Monday, August 13th 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

in the Conference Room.

Please contact Mary Kay Evanko at (619) 276-1041 to register for this class. It’s Quarter & Can Weekend!!!

All coin in our weekend collection will be donated to Birthline, a non-profit agency that provides free counseling and services to young women who are experiencing distress due to an unplanned pregnancy, and is committed to saving babies’ lives. All canned goods, soap, and paper products will be sent to CCSA. Wanted: Ministers of the Word, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and Ushers for The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15

Ministers of the Word, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and Ushers are needed for the Vigil Mass, August 14th and the Holy Day August 15th the Feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sign up sheets are located on the bulletin board in the vestibule of the Church. Please sign up this weekend! Eucharist Ministers to the Homebound

It takes a special person to bring the Holy Eucharist to our homebound parishioners. We have some very faithful ministers who would like to retire from their position; however, will not do so until another minister is in place. Please open your heart and prayer-fully consider filling one of these positions. Scheduling is done on a 3 week rotation. You do not need to current-ly be a Eucharist Minister. Training will be available. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact the parish office at (619) 276-1041 or Deacon Ralph at (858) 776-7151.

STEWARDSHIP... A Response to God’s Gifts

Question: How do we know that stewardship is present for us individually and as a community? Answer: Stewardship involves a lifelong process of study, reflection, prayer, and action. To make steward-ship a way of life for individuals, families, and the parish requires a change of heart and a new understanding of what it means to follow Jesus without counting the cost. This conversion of mind and heart will not happen overnight, but as always, the Holy Spirit is at work in the Church today. Those parishes that embrace the theology and practice of stewardship begin to see a change of attitude on the part of clergy, religious and lay people. We include development in our stewardship effort because a stewardship parish needs to invite all members of the parish to invest in the mission and vision for the future. It is through the development process, where many are involved in parish life, that the connection to stewardship — the giving back of time, talent, and treasure — is clear. Both involve an invest-ment for us as individuals and for our parish knowing that our work will result in a community where all are provided for— none are hungry — all are fed.

Some Natural Ways to Reduce Anxiety

Anxiety is defined as excessive worry, apprehension and expectation occurring on more days than not for at least 6 months. It may include heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, dry mouth, difficulty breathing, a feeling of choking, chest pain, nausea, and a sense of dread. Anxiety increases arousal levels in the brain and the body and is typically treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. There are also some behavioral ways we can decrease our levels of anxiety. The following suggestions may help. 1. Manage caffeine consumption. Caffeine can make us feel more anxious and keep us up at night. This includes coffee, tea, candy bars, chocolate, protein bars. Some specialty water, energy drinks, chocolate, or coffee-flavored ice cream, soda, decaf-feinated coffee and hot chocolate all contain some caffeine. 2. Get enough sleep. 7-9 hours per night is ideal for most of us to feel rested. Without it, the body and brain don’t get the downtime they need to recharge and reset. 3. Consider your diet. An unhappy digestive system contributes to lowered or anxious feelings. Check with your primary care provider to discuss the diet best for your particular needs. 4. Limit social media. If you feel anxious and stressed when you can’t check your Facebook, Twit-ter, Instagram, Snapchat or other social media ac-counts, you might want to consider taking some time away from them. Slowly reducing the amount of time you spend looking at your devices each day can help you work with your anxiety in manageable doses. 5. Spend more time in prayer. Practice yoga, Tai Chi, Authentic Movement Therapy, or Qigong. Any of these practices can allow you to tune into your body with movement and mindfulness. By being more aware of your body’s sensations and signals, you can become better able to recognize anxiety when it starts to bubble up. As you become more tuned in to your body, you can attend to the anxiety before it gets overwhelming. 6. Exercise regularly. Exercising releases endor-phins, adrenaline, and other “good” chemicals and hormones in the body. It also helps relieve stress. But, like meditation, it must be done regularly.

(Continued next column)

(Behavioral Health Ministry continued)

7. Practice belly breathing or other deep breath exercises to stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the top of the spine to the stomach. Stimulating the vagus nerve activates the part of the nervous system that helps the body calm down and reduce anxiety. 8. Practice mindful meditation. Mindful meditation has been shown to help reduce anxiety and depres-sion. Apps are available on your phone and on YouTube. In meditation, it is not necessary to try and clear the mind of all thoughts. During guided mindful-ness meditations, you pay attention to an “anchor,” such as your breath, natural sounds, a crucifix, a candle, or a statue. Each time you are carried away by a thought, bring your attention back to the anchor. 9. Work with a therapist. Counseling provides a safe, non-judgmental place to talk about what’s on your mind.
