For early Christians they could use this symbol without being recognized as Christians. The anchor is something to hold onto when the seas get rough or when our lives seem disturbed. When we get the news of having cancer or a spouse dying or a child being sick, what do we hold onto? Faced with the storms that we invariably encounter Christ is our sure and solid hope, our anchor. As we look forward to Christmas in a few days here is the anchor once again presented to us as a newborn child. A vulnerable, needy baby born for us. From the Pastor’s Desk: Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist:

It is amazing that we begin Advent with the admonition: “Stay Awake!” and we all think of this as a future event. Yet, here we have two sudden and tragic deaths; Delores Giroux in St. Joseph and Kort Plantenberg from Collegeville. What a reminder of our fragility. Over the years I have looked at and studied various symbols of our Christian life. The most arresting of these are found in the earliest catacombs of the Christians in Rome. There are fish or a pea-cock. Another symbol is the anchor. The anchor is an instrument that holds a boat in place. It represents stability and security. Start your New Year with a TEC Retreat

It’s that time of the year when many people make resolutions to improve their physical and spiritual well-being. Central Minne-sota Together Encountering Christ (TEC) is hosting a special New Year’s weekend, December 27-29 (Friday – Sunday). Why not start the New Year off with other youth (age 16+), young adults and adults looking for further meaning in life, perhaps a little direction, and a closer relationship with God. There will also be a TEC weekend over January 18-20 and February 15-17. For full TEC schedule and details, go to www.cmtec.org, or call (320) 532-4455.

Third Sunday in Advent

Gospel Reflection for December 15th

The readings this weekend talk about active and joyful waiting. The Gospel tells of John’s waiting and his questions about Jesus. Like others in the Jewish tradition, John is expecting the Messiah to be a powerful leader, so he questions the mission of Jesus. He sends his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for another?” Jesus responds that the deaf hear, lepers are cleansed, and the poor have the good news preached to them. Jesus says that the true reading of Scripture looks forward to a messiah who would touch the lives of people where they are.

Jesus will come to heal the people spiritually and physically and restore their relationship with God. This week take time to re-flect on how Jesus touches your life each day. Where do you need healing? This week also take advantage of the Advent Pen-ance Service on Saturday the 21st at 1 p.m.
