THE CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
CCHD: Working on the Margins The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the national anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ "... to bring good news to the poor ... release to captives ... sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free." (Luke 4:18) This weekend, Nov. 23-24, dioceses across the United States will take up the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. When you participate in this collection, you help groups of low-income people in your diocese and across the coun-try in their efforts to provide access to affordable housing, health care, jobs, employee-owned businesses, and rights for immi-grants. By supporting CCHD, you help out your own neighbors, because 25 percent of your contribution stays within your own diocese!

On May 2, 1806, as the evening Angelus rang out across the Burgundy region of France, a daughter named Zoe Catherine was born to Pierre and Madeline Louise Laboure. She was the ninth of eleven healthy, happy chil-dren of the upper middle class farming family in the wine region. Zoe Catherine was a devout intuitive child. Upon her mother’s death when she was nine years old, she returned home from the funeral, walked over to a statue of the Blessed Virgin in her room, stood on a chair to pick it up, kissed it, proclaiming, “Now, dear Lady, you will be my mother.”
She & her sister, Tonine, went to live with her father’s sister six miles away from her family home. After living there for a few years, she returned to her father’s home to supervise the running of the household. Catherine, which was the name the family chose to call her, received her First Communion in 1818 and from that day, rose at 4:00 am and walked several miles to church to assist at Mass and to pray. After a decade of caring for her family, Catherine entered the Daughters of Charity a nursing order founded by St. Vincent de Paul. She chose this order due to a dream she had where the saint visited her and told her it was her vocation to look after the sick. She became a postulant in their hospice and entered the Seminary in their Mother House.
Shortly after entering the convent, she experienced extraordinary visions. On three consecutive days she beheld the heart of St. Vincent above his reliquary and, at other times, she beheld our divine Lord in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The visions that Catherine is most remembered for are those where she the Mother of God with her own eyes. The first one occurred on the eve of the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. She awoke from sleep to a brilliant light and a child’s voice telling her that the Blessed Virgin was waiting for her. Mary told Cathe-rine that God wished to charge her with a mission. She would face obstacles and be contradicted but that Cath-erine would have the protection of God and St. Vincent and that Mary would always have her eyes upon her. On a subsequent vision, Mary showed Catherine the image of a medal and told her to “have the Medal struck after this image. All who wear it will receive great grace; they should wear it around the neck. Graces will abound for persons who wear it with confidence.” When Catherine asked how this would be possible, Mary replied that she should go to her confessor, Fr. Jean Marie Aladel telling her that he was her servant. Catherine met with resistance, as Mary had told her, but Fr. Aladel believed the apparitions to be genuine and went to the archbish-op who ordered 2000 medals in June of 1832. They devotion to this medal was so swift and complete that it was called miraculous.
Catherine did not reveal that she was the recipient of the vision of the medal for over forty years. All of her ef-forts were spent caring for the infirm and the elderly as a Vincentian nurse. It was only right before her death that her role as the recipient of Our Lady’s Miraculous Medal was revealed. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII in July of 1947.
The secret that St. Catherine kept for almost a half century has since shaken the world. “O, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee…”
The lives of the saints speak to us across time; perhaps, we see our stories echoed within theirs? If their holiness can shine in their lives, maybe we can radiate God’s love in our
own time.
I knew nothing. I was nothing. For this reason God picked me out. —Catherine Laboure
