November 17, 2019

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,

A few timely items for this Sunday in the middle of November. First, thank you for all the interest and support our parishioners have given to our appeal for a small increase in Sunday contributions. A COFFEE A DAY FOR OUR PARISH is a simple request for a small increase in your weekly giving. Especially helpful would be for more people to begin to donate online. This can save our parish money and eliminate your writing checks or searching for the right currency to put in an envelope each week. To see how to do this easily, please go to our parish website: saintteresasi.org. Click on the ParishPay/We Share link, and then arrange regular donations as you want.

Thank you too for your generous support in recent weeks for our Boy Scouts’ delicious Pancake Breakfast and raffles. This was a big help for funding their activities and giving great experiences. And thanks from the dedicated parents of children with special needs who attend the Seton Foundation for Learning. They were here last weekend, and they highly praised your willingness to stop and talk and take a chance to help them help their children.

Christmas is coming quickly, so please know that the reservations for our beautiful Christmas Tree Display are going quickly. The Holy Name Society has decided to extend your chance to reserve a tree to November 29. Trees are delivered the next day, and will be lit up after the 4pm Mass on December 7. A final reservation form is within.

But today has a Birthday of Jesus connection too. Please come to the lower church hall Saturday after Mass and all day Sunday to see a wonderful display of handcrafted olive wood gifts—stables, crosses, large and small items made by a struggling minority of Christian artisans trying to stay in Bethlehem. They need our concern and support.

Looking ahead two weeks, know that you are welcome to an OPEN HOUSE at 139 Windsor Road—our former convent, now called ArchCare at St. Teresa. This will be on Sunday, December 1 from 11am to 2pm. Before the residents move in in January, see what you have helped us to offer a special group of God’s autistic young adults.

This Friday we will welcome Bishop John O'Hara for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our candidates have prepared for a whole year. Their names are in this bulletin for your prayer support. Notice their Confirmation names as well. I want to thank the parents who have shepherded these young adults towards the com-pletion of their three Sacraments of Initiation. Parents are the first religion teachers of their children; grandparents and sponsors also have key roles to play. And I want to give special thanks to our excellent Religious Education Coordinator, Mrs. Lisa Rametta, and to our students' teachers: Mrs. Denise Enright and Mrs. Karin Conry.

Every Catholic person should be confirmed and strengthened with the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Why is Confirmation an essential sacrament for all the members of our Church? Because ignorance and weakness are so very dangerous. People need as much WISDOM and GRACE as we can get - mature knowledge of God's plan for us, and a constant flow of God's powerful assistance for our human journey through the struggles of this world.

Let me remind us what happens at a Confirmation Mass. After the Bishop's homily, candidates stand. Bishop O'Hara - ordained to be a successor of the Apostles - will extend his hands over the candidates, in an ancient gesture that signifies the Gift of the Holy Spirit. He will invoke for them an outpouring of the Holy Spirit with these words:

All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daugh-ters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Then the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred. Using holy oil - chrism blessed by our Cardinal at St. Patrick's Cathedral during Holy Week - Bishop O'Hara will anoint each person on the forehead, using the chosen Confirma-tion name, and will say: Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The sponsor stands with the candidate and places his/her hand on the right shoulder of the one being confirmed as a sign of solidarity and support. This sacra-mental moment concludes with a greeting of peace to the newly-confirmed and to his/her sponsor. Mass continues with the Eucharistic Prayer and reaches a climax with our reception of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A final schedule note: Join us on Thanksgiving Day for our one Parish Thanksgiving Mass at 9am. Telling our stories, eating and drinking, renewing bonds of family and friendship: this too is what the Eucharist is all about.
