PARISH OFFICE The parish office is answering the phones but the office is closed. If you have an emer-gency and need a priest, please call the office at 718-987-2670.
Live in the Light When we can’t rely on the buildings and struc-tures of our parish, we are offered an oppor-tunity to lean into our unity of faith as a body. Enlightened by Christ, by the many saints who have marked the way before us, we are invited to share this light with one another. Let’s start this vigil together with a practical, simple first step of offering everything we do back to God. A great way to start is with a morning offering. Let’s reclaim these days ahead of us. Although we are being asked to physically distance ourselves from one another, we have an opportunity now to spiritually unite each day as we claim our homes and our daily living for Christ.
Morning Offering O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sac-rifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen.

Today’s Gospel—John 14: 15-21
Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”
The Gospel of the Lord.

Romans 8: 38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor pre-sent things nor future things, nor powers nor height, nor depth, nor any other crea-ture will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacra-mentally,
Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there
And unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.
PRAY THE ROSARY May is such a beautiful month. The whole month is dedicated to our Blessed Lady, Mother of
God. The pious practice of honoring the Blessed
Virgin Mary during the entire month of May has been especially recommended by many Popes. Mary is our loving mother. Her maternal heart is full of love and mercy for her beloved children. She is always waiting for us to turn to her for her motherly guidance. She constantly presents all our prayers to her dear son, Jesus. Mary is known as the “Gate of Heaven“. We need to pray the Rosary every single day during the month of May. If you cannot pray the entire ro-s a r y w i t h d e d i c a t i o n , p r a y a t least one decade with all your heart, and if a dec-ade is not possible, recite at least one Hail
Mary with complete devotion. When we pray the Hail Mary, we ask our heav-enly mother to intercede for us now and at the hour of our death. Yes, we need her power-ful intercession during that fearful time. Our merciful mother will help us, we only need to pray to her without ceasing.
Canticle of Mary My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spir-it, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
SOCIAL DISTANCING NOT SPIRITUAL DISTANCING… Recently I heard a story about two masked men who entered a bank. Everyone nervously stared at them. One of them then said, “oh, don’t worry folks...this is just a robbery!” All of us have learned in the past two months to put our masks on when we enter a store. But what happens when the elastic on the mask breaks? That’s exactly what happened to me at the dry cleaners a few weeks ago. My mask snapped! There was a man who was coming into the store at the same time and when he saw my broken face covering, he ran out. The clerk behind the counter said to me, “looks like he’s afraid to come back in as long as you’re here!” As I passed him on the street I said, “sorry sir but I am not contaminated!” He said, “how do I know that?” There is a great deal of nervousness in our society today over covid 19. But perhaps all of us just need to be calm and while taking all the precautions try to be kind to one another! The other phenomena that we have all become familiar with since March is what we call “social dis-tancing.” For some people it comes easier than others. A man had a sign on his office door which read: “Please respect my personal space. Nothing to do with corona virus. I am just a miserable son of a gun.” A lady made a comment to me last week about how she did not like that term “social distancing.” She sug-gested that “physical distancing” is a better phrase and I think that’s right. Human beings need to socialize, interact with each other and communicate! Even before this virus, there was too much social isolation, especially among the young. With the onset of the pandemic, we have moved into a new virtual world where physical presence and communication is lessened. We meet now on facebook, zoom, instagram and other cyber sites. While this is a temporary measure, it’s not really beneficial in the long run for the human spirit. God does not communicate to ma-chines—he communicates to all of us who are living persons! The Acts of the Apostles reminds us that “God is not far from anyone of us.” All we have to do is to pray. Of course, we do not need to be in church to pray. However, the church is really the most excellent place to pray because there in the tabernacle we have the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic. The Lord is in our midst and if it is possible, we should try to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament—no mask is required! Here at St. Charles, we have kept the church open each day and I know that many of you are grateful for that privilege. If we can’t make it to the church or feel uncomfortable, we can always pray at home. Of course, there are distractions in the house, but if we have a small “prayer corner” with perhaps a statue or a crucifix, it will help. The important thing about prayer is that we must do it! More than ever, we need to speak to the Lord and to listen to His word. Prayer gives us light, peace and joy. With the strength and grace that prayer obtains, we should then begin to “see Christ” in our brothers and sisters all around us and pray for them. Social distancing does not entail spiritual distancing. In the scriptures, we read these words: “Cast all your cares upon the Lord for He does indeed care for you.” No distance here! During this stressful time, let us put our trust in the Lord our Shepherd who leads us and guides us.
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Jerome
