FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

PRAY, HOPE AND DON’T WORRY! A priest told me that he had a terrible nightmare one evening. It seems that this priest dreamed that he was on the line to get into heaven. Who was there at the pearly gates but none other than Saint Peter himself! Now directly ahead of this

priest on line was Mother Teresa. When Peter looked into his book before admitting Mother Teresa, he said, “You can come in…but you know something? You could have done more…” Well this priest woke up in a cold sweat! Certainly, when we think about it , all of us could do more and be more as Catholic Christians. Truth be told however, we’re sort of “lukewarm” disciples. A very smart man said, “One step beyond mediocrity and we’re saved.” Well, the saints made that step-that’s why they’re canonized saints! During this month of September, we honor a great saint by the name of Padre Pio. I think that most of us have heard about him. He lived in relatively recent times. Born in Morcone, Italy on May 25, 1887, his giv-en name was Francesco Forgione. When he entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order at the age of 15, he took the name “Pio” or Pius. Padre Pio was very devoted to Our Lord and his Mother Mary. He was a man of great prayer and it was said that his Mass took a few hours-can you imagine what some of us would say about that when we don’t like Mass to go beyond 45 minutes? Probably no one would call asking what Mass he was saying! But Padre Pio truly appreciated and valued the Eucharist in a way that we cannot understand. In September, 1918, Padre Pio received a very great blessing from the Lord. As he prayed intensely in the choir loft of the chapel in Pietrelcina, he received in his body what is known as the “Stigmata” the five wounds of our Blessed Savior appeared in his body-in the hands, feet, and side. Only a few saints and holy people during the ages have been the recipient of the Stigmata-the most famous person being Saint Francis of Assisi himself. The Stigmata brought Padre Pio great fame all across Italy and the world. People flocked to see him from all over. However, the Stigmata also brought this Holy Friar a great deal of suffering. Some individuals thought he was a faker, and the bishop of his Diocese made a complaint about him. Eventually the Vatican for-bade Padre Pio from saying public Masses and hearing confessions which as you might imagine, was a terrible cross to bear. Yet Padre Pio was an obedient priest and eventually he was vindicated-the restrictions were lift-ed. So even the saints didn’t have it easy at times! Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968 which is now the date of his feast in the Church calendar. Less than 35 years later, Pope John Paul II canonized him a saint. One of Padre Pio’s most famous sayings was: “Pray, hope and don’t worry.” Worrying, he said was absolutely useless. In a time when there are a lot of things to worry about-hurricanes, the threat of nuclear weapons, crime on our streets, and drug abuse, shouldn’t we take a cue from Padre Pio and try to pray and trust a little bit more in the Good Lord? No, we’re not saints-but certainly we could “do more’ praying and hoping. Let’s begin today! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome (The relics of Saint Padre Pio will be on display at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan- September 17th - 18th) 10
