The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part II
Apparition of the Angel
SPRING, 1916
Comment:
When the angel first appeared to the children of Fatima, World War I was raging and the Bolsheviks were gaining
power in Russia. In fact, the very name for their party means “majority.” They had become one of the major politi-
cal parties in Russia. There were two attempts to seize power, one in 1915 and one in 1916, but both failed. It is
interesting to note that in 1915 Lucia and two other girls where tending sheep, when they saw a vision, but did not
know what to make of it and eventually dismissed it. Lucia, in hind sight after the apparitions, recalls that this was
the first visit of the angel, but no communication was made by either the angel or the three girls. While the angel
was appearing to the Lucia and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta in 1916, Rasputin, who by many accounts
seemed to be an agent of the devil, was advising the Tsar of Russia, who in turn was making matters worse in Rus-
sia, allowing the Bolsheviks to gain in power. It was Rasputin who was influencing decisions made by the Tsar
through the Tsarina. Many ascribe the disastrous events of 1916 largely due to the influence of Rasputin. What
were the disastrous events? In general it was the collapse of the power and influence of the Tsar in Russian politics,
opening the way for the Bolsheviks to gain power. In 1917, not only did they have power, but they overthrew the
Tsar and gained control of Russia through the Bolshevik revolution. While the world was at war and Rasputin was
leading Russia astray, an Angel of God was sent to three peasant children to prepare them for God’s response to
these events and the horrors to follow.
In 1916 Lucia dos Santos was 9. She was a very sensible girl for 9 and was entrusted with tending the sheep. Her
cousins could no longer tend them with her, and so she begged her aunt and uncle to let her other cousins Francisco
and Jacinta Martos assist her. They were only 8 and 5, respectively. Lucia was able to convince her aunt to let
them go with her by promising she would teach them their catechism lesson. Lucia, although she could not read,
had already memorized her catechism and was permitted at an early age to receive Holy Communion. In 1916, one
usually did not receive Holy Communion until around the age of 12 or 14.
Lucia does not recall the date of the first apparition of the Angel, she only remembers is was in the spring of 1916.
She relates the story as follows:
Story:
As it drew closer, we were able to distinguish its features. It was a young man, about fourteen or fifteen years old,
whiter than snow, transparent as crystal when the sun shines through it, and of great beauty.
Comment:
An angel is a spiritual being created by God. Angels do not have physical bodies. Angels exist outside the realm
of time, in the realm of eternity, they do not have an “age” as we understand it. Also, angels are neither male nor
female. What Lucia is describing is how the angel appeared to them, so that they could experience the angel’s pres-
ence in a tangible and describable form. As we are now, we are not able to experience a pure spiritual being, as it
actually and truly is of itself. With Divine intervention, a vision or experience of a pure spiritual reality is possible,
but indescribable. We do not have the language for it. This is often the case in scripture, the angels appear in vari-
ous forms comprehensible to the human recipient. This does not mean the form the angel takes does not reflect in
some manner the reality of its being, but who is to say? They have appeared in such a way that the recipients did
not know they were entertaining angels. In this case, the Angel appeared in such a manner that they knew this was
not a fifteen year old boy – but an angel. Lucia does relate that the beauty and mystical quality of the angel was
beyond description.
Lesson:
Angels do exist. This reaffirms what the Church has always taught and continues to teach, with certainty.
Angels are very beautiful.
