Catholic Catechism for Adults The presence of the Catholic Church in the United States reach-es back to the founding days of our country through the leadership of Archbishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States. His story like the stories at the start of each chapter in the Unit-ed States Catholic Catechism for Adults give us a glimpse into the lives of Catholics who lived out their faith throughout our country's histo-ry. Each chapter in the Catechism for Adults includes stories, doctrine, reflection, quotations, discussion questions, and prayer to lead the reader to a deepening faith. Join us Monday evenings beginning January 21 in the Convent basement at 7:00pm as we explore this rich source of our Catholic Faith in the United States. Purchase the book on Amazon or at any book store. Register for class: [email protected] or call 267-831-8046.

    The Baptism of the Lord

    January 13, 2019

FOCUS: God’s saving grace is found in Jesus Christ.

It can be easy to forget the tremendous blessings we enjoy because of God’s love for us—perhaps even tak-ing them for granted. It is good to spend time with Scripture, and at Mass, thanking God for his never-ending love. We are reminded in word and sacrament that God’s saving grace is found in Jesus Christ.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah prophesies the

Lord bringing peace and victory to Israel, and foretells the ministry of John the Baptist. Paul's Letter to Titus reminds his listeners of the saving grace of God in Je-sus Christ. In Luke’s Gospel, John the Baptist denies being the Messiah, and at the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit appears in the shape of a dove. God the Father’s voice is heard proclaiming Jesus as his be-loved son.

REFLECTION: Isn’t it good news to know how God favors us? Doesn’t it cause us surprise and wonder when we hear that, despite what we have done, or de-serve, God looks kindly on us and is ready to come to our aid.

    So we ask ourselves:

When have I experienced God’s gratuitous gift of forgiveness?

How have I passed that forgiveness on to others?
