Dear Parents, Community Members and Students,
I encourage you to live out your baptismal vows by participating and supporting our Catechists in
our common responsibility of passing on the Catholic faith to our children. In his letter to
Catechists, “CATECHESI TRADENDAE”, our beloved pope, Saint John Paul II reminds us of
Jesus’ last command to his followers, “The Church has always considered catechesis one of her
primary tasks, for as Christ ascended to His Father, He gave the apostles a final command - to
make disciples of all nations and to teach them to observe all that He had commanded. For this
purpose Jesus gave them the Spirit to carry out this mission.” St. Pius V Church in Cannon Falls,
devotes much of its energy to provide catechists who willingly respond to Jesus’ call to go out and
make new disciples, to help people believe Jesus is the Son of God and to help build the Body of
Christ.
Parents, I encourage to be the primary witnesses of faith to your children. You are the first to teach
your children to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and loving
neighbor. Both, the parents at home and the Catechist at church, partake of Jesus’ command to
transmit “not one’s own teaching or that of some other master, but the teaching of Jesus Christ… to
put it more precisely, the Truth that He is” (Catechesi Tradendae). Thus, on passing the faith to the
children; we must do it in a spirit of Christian humility as Jesus himself taught us, “My teaching is
not mine, but his who sent me.” Christian humility is necessary, whether we teach faith at home,
school, or church. In addition, all Catechists and Parents must be of the same mind and spirit, for
there is, "one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all.”
Both, Catechists and Parents should make sure that passing on the faith to our children is not merely
a mental exercise, for above the child’s intellectual needs; faith formation should communicate the
joy and wonder of being a witness to Christ. As your Pastor, I invite all Parents, Children and Youth
at St. Pius V Church to consider participating in all the Faith Formation aspects of the Parish’s
religious program; the ritual, spiritual, prayer, social, and sacramental components, which promote
our children’s growth in maturity and growth in Church unity.
Furthermore, Parents, you are able to create a lasting impression in the faith of your infants and
children by reciting the daily catholic prayers, which will serve them as their beginning of the
loving dialogue with the God whose word your children have begun to hear.
Dear Catechist and Parents, I look forward to joining you in the faith of the Church by actively
participating in the Church’s mission of going out and making disciples of all nations and teaching
them all Jesus has commanded us.
Yours Truly,
Fr. Terry Beeson

Additional Components to Classroom Instruction
Spiritual Retreats
In addition to regular classroom instruction students may be asked to participate in day, overnight or
weekend retreat. The purpose of a spiritual retreat is to temporarily leave behind the usual
distractions we all face in our daily lives and take time to reflect on our relationship with God.
The experience of retreats is meant to enhance the faith formation journey. Jesus, himself, set an
example and called the disciples to retreat: “In those days he departed to the mountain to pray, and
he spent the night in prayer to God. (Luke 6:12) “The apostles gathered together with Jesus and
reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, ‘Come away by your selves to a deserted
place and rest a while.’” (Mark 6: 30-31)
Protection of Children and Youth Initiative
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) established a comprehensive set of
procedures “The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” in order to protect all
children and young people in all environments, so that parents will be confident in the participation
of their children in parish and school activities. (USCCB/OCYP)
The Church of St. Pius V is taking many steps to follow the directives established by the
Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. In order to ensure the safety of all children and young
people in our program, all volunteers who have regular, ongoing contact with minors are required to
attend an adult safe environment training session (VIRTUS), submit to a background check and sign
a Code of Conduct form.
In addition, we will present a personal safety curriculum for children and young people that
incorporate age-appropriate materials from NetSmartz: Know the Rules and other archdiocesan
approved materials.
You can learn more about the program and the safety rules the students will be learning by visiting
the website www.netsmartz.org . Materials used in the curriculum are taken directly from this
website. If you do not have internet access and would like to review the material please contact the
faith formation office.

Role of the Parent
The Second Vatican Council states that “Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost
educators of their children. Their role as educators is so decisive that scarcely anything can
compensate for their failure in it.”
“Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child’s earliest years. This already
happens when family members help one another grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in
keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis preceded, accompanies, and enriches other forms of
instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover
their vocation as children of God.” Catechism of the Catholic Church #2226
Parents are called to “accompany” and “enrich” other forms of instructions in the faith. Therefore,
parents are asked to share in the Faith Formation process by: Being role models in practicing their Catholic faith
Attending Mass as a family (Saturday vigil or Sunday)
Praying with their child(ren) and teaching them the memorized prayers
Ensuring students attend class and other activities—Provide transportation to and from events
Attending scheduled Family events throughout the year
Following through on various home assignments
Visit classroom and assist Catechist as needed
Support the efforts of the Catechists and Faith Formation Coordinator to provide a safe, secure and
non-threatening environment.
Prayers
With the limited classroom time the children spend in religious education, it is not possible to help
the children learn all of these prayers by heart. This is why we ask the parents to become our
partners in this mission. Using the schedule below and the prayers provided we ask that you please
help your children learn them in your home. (See back pages of handbook for prayers)

Be sure you are teaching your children how to genuflect and proper church/mass behavior. (Using the holy water font, respect for the tabernacle, no gum in church, when to stand, kneel, etc.)
General Policies Attendance:
We do our best to schedule activities, retreats and service projects so as not to be in conflict with school
events or sports. While we all agree that after school activities are an important part of your child’s
growth, special care must be given to their spiritual development. Weekly attendance is expected and
necessary to assure reasonable participation and learning. Please schedule your child’s activities for a
time that does not conflict with his or her Faith Formation.
Please call the office and leave a message if your child will be absent due to illness or family
emergency. Our phone number is 263-4800.
Please help your child manage their time; try not to miss class due to homework or
extracurricular activity
Students are to complete make up assignments in order to make up for an absence from class
or missed retreat/service ministry. Parents/students are responsible for contacting their
teacher for make-up assignments
If a student has three or more absences (without make-up work if any), parents will be
contacted to discuss a solution. Parents and student may be asked to meet with Pastor and
Faith Formation Coordinator.
If a student needs to be excused early from class—a written excuse signed by a parent must
be presented to the teacher or office by the beginning of class. Parents/students must sign
out with the catechist or faith formation coordinator.
Personal Belongings:
Students will be provided with a book and basic materials.
Students should not bring anything else to class unless instructed by the teacher.
Items not allowed in Faith Formation Classes will be confiscated and kept in the office until
end of class.
11
SPV FF Handbook (Revised 8.13.14)
Bad Weather Policy:
If the Cannon Falls/Randolph Public School District cancels school or afterschool activities
on any scheduled Faith Formation class day due to weather; Faith Formation classes will
also be cancelled. Parent discretion is advised. You can also confirm via our Facebook
page: St. Pius V Catholic Church.
Emergency Contact: If at any time during the program year your family contact information has changed please
notify the office. It is crucial to have up-to-date information.
Safety and Security: Parents of elementary students are asked to drop off and pick up their students in their
classroom unless they make arrangements with the teacher for an older sibling to pick up the
student.
Visitors—we ask and encourage parents to sustain involvement in the classrooms. In
compliance with the Protection of Children and Youth Initiative through the Archdiocese;
all adults who have regular or ongoing contact with students are required to attend a
VIRTUS training session. All parent or visitors must check in with the faith formation
coordinator.
Parents/students are asked to follow the instruction of the traffic signs with regards to
dropping and picking up students.
Classroom Environment: Catechists will provide a positive and non-threatening classroom environment in which
spiritual growth can flourish.
Students are expected to treat the Catechist, adults and fellow students with respect.
Students are expected to respect the property given for their use, and the property of other
students.
Students are expected to come to class appropriately and modestly dressed. No hats are to
be worn in the building
Students are not allowed anywhere in the building without supervision or permission.
Running, shoving, pushing, fighting and snowball fights are prohibited at all times.
Catechist will define appropriate and acceptable behavior and handle the direction of
discipline.
Students are expected to follow the classroom rules set forth by their teacher.
Classroom Management:
We recognize that learning cannot take place unless the environment is one with order and purpose,
where every person and all property are respected. Furthermore faith formation classes are short in
length. In order for catechists to have enough time to teach the necessary concepts, they are not
expected to spend a lot of time on discipline.
12
SPV FF Handbook (Revised 8.13.14)
The following actions will take place when students engage in disrupting and disrespecting
behavior. If disrupting behavior becomes a habit, then parents will be asked to attend a meeting
with the Pastor and Faith Formation Coordinator to address appropriate action.
1st Notice—Student is given a verbal warning
2nd Notice—Student is removed from the classroom to meet with FF Coordinator
3rd Notice—Student is removed from the classroom to call their parent to take them home.
Catechetical Volunteers
In order to serve the faith formation needs of our parish, it is essential for a number of people to
answer the call. Each year we need catechists and Liturgy of the Word for Children leaders to share
the faith with our parish children and youth. Training is provided. We also have an In Service prior
to the start of classes. All volunteers require the 3 Essentials: Background Check, Signed Code of
Conduct, and VIRTUS Training. God does not call those who are qualified; He qualifies those He
calls. Please be in prayer about this ministry.
Youth Ministry Volunteers
Youth Ministry has a team of volunteers to help facilitate the program and activities. The team
members are asked to commit to at least 2 years when possible. Team includes Foods Coordinator,
Volunteers Coordinator, Activities Assistant and Communications Coordinator.
Team members are trained through a Volunteers Orientation and have contact with each other,
volunteers, the Youth Leadership Team, the Associate for Youth Ministry and the pastor.
Chaperones are needed for events and require the 3 Essentials: Background Check, Signed Code of
Conduct, and VIRTUS Training.
