May 6, 2018Sixth Sunday of Easter (B)
Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48; 1 Jn 4:7–10 or 1 Jn 4:11–16;Jn 15:9–17 or Jn 17:11b–19
There is a painting by Aldo Carpi (1886-1973) showing theVirgin Mary bringing the Baby Jesus to visit the poor. Shedoesnʼt make distinctions. Mary understood that Jesus didnʼtcome just for the rich and powerful but for everyone.
Peter learns this lesson when speaking to Cornelius and hishousehold. Until this time, the apostles were preaching to theJewish people, but when Peter speaks to these Romans, theHoly Spirit comes upon them just as he had upon the Jews. They repent and believe. This for Peter was essential, becauseit showed that Jesus wanted to send his Spirit and teachings toeveryone, not just the chosen race. God doesnʼt showfavoritism.
The same goes for us. Itʼs natural to want to love our own:our family and those sharing our social status, political party, club, school, or parish. But our love has to spread to all peoples, especially those in the most moral, material, and spiritual need.God is love, and those who love show they come from God.
Another element of love is that it is free, wanting nothing inreturn. Recently, while sitting at an outdoor café, a womanwalked up and gave me a small wrapped gift. “I like to give giftsto complete strangers, just to make their day,” she said. What abeautiful gesture.
We should also note that Cornelius accepted Godʼs love, wasbaptized, and began following the Way. He and his family didnʼttake that free love of God for granted. They responded to it injoyful obedience. Godʼs generous love asks for an equallygenerous response.

Sixth Sunday of Easter
May 6, 2018
Introduction to the Liturgy of the
Day: Last week the word “remain” was repeated
over and over in the second reading and the
Gospel. This week the word is “love.” In both his first let-
ter and his Gospel, John writes “love one another.” It is a
command to all Jesus’ disciples, from the apostles at the
Last Supper to all of us gathered around the table of the
Lord today. To love each other as we are loved by God is
what we are all called to do.
Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word: Today the focus of the readings is on others. Peter preached
to the Gentiles, people outside the Jewish community, and
was surprised that the Holy Spirit came to them as well.
John writes that we are to love one another as God loves us.
In the Gospel, Jesus challenges his disciples to love one an-
other as he loves them, that is, with a self-sacrificing love.
This, truly, is the love that we are called to have for others.

Through interviews, classes and discussions, adults are prepared to accept the challenge of our baptism and encouraged to live the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. The RCIA process is also for those Catholics who have not been educated in our faith and have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion.
