SEEING IS BELIEVING People in Jesus' time thought blindness was caused by sinfulness. In today's Gospel, the Pharisees--the supreme rule-keepers--were far less concerned about the blind man than that Jesus broke the rule of the Sabbath. The rules governing what could and could not be done on the Sabbath seemed more important than rest from labor. When Jesus healed the blind man, the Pharisees labeled them both as sinners. We can be equally judgmental, ranging from annoyance if our grown children do not live their lives exactly as we do, all the way to condemnation of all those of a different religion or political persuasion. The angrier we are, the more blind we are to our lack of charity. Saint Paul says we live in the light of Christ and should try to produce "every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth" (Ephesians 5:9). Rules have their place, but things go amiss when we place the rules above everything else. That's a blindness we cannot afford. Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

En el Evangelio de hoy los fariseos--el grupo más aferrado a la ley--estaban más preocupados porque Jesús había quebrantado la ley del sábado que por el ciego. Las leyes acerca de lo que se permitía o no se permitía el sábado parecían más importantes que el descanso del trabajo. Cuando Jesús curó al ciego los fariseos catalogaron a ambos como pecadores. Nosotros podemos erigirnos igualmente jueces cuando nuestros hijos no viven del mismo modo que nosotros o hasta podemos llegar a condenar a otras personas de diferente religión o partido político. Cuanto más nos enojamos, más ciegos nos volvemos y más faltos de caridad. San Pablo dice que vivimos en la luz de Cristo y que nuestros frutos deben ser "la bondad, la santidad y la verdad". (Efesios 5:9). Las reglas tienen su lugar, pero algo falla cuando ponemos las reglas por encima de todo lo demás. Ésa es una ceguera que no podemos permitirnos. Jesus heals the man so that he can see. However, the Pharisees remain blind because they refuse to see who Jesus really is. They are more concerned about the Sabbath laws than they are about a fellow human being in need. The blind man gains not only his sight but also insight. When Jesus identifies himself as the Son of Man, a title for the Messiah, the man says, "I do believe, Lord." And he worships Jesus. As we worship Jesus in the Eucharist, our eyes are opened to see Christ in others. 1.) Who are the "truly blind" people in this gospel story? How can you keep from going through life "blind" to the reality of Jesus and his love in your life? How will you stay alert to really see and care for those who need Jesus' healing touch?

The church slowly developed customs of reserving some portion of the eucharistic sacrifice for the sake of the dying. Today’s custom of placing this portion in a tabernacle for prayer and adoration by the faithful cannot be traced back much beyond the year 1,000, much to almost everyone’s surprise. There is simply no historical evidence of the Blessed Sacrament being present in a church for the purpose of having the faithful visit it or pray before it earlier in the church’s history. People did visit, of course, but the center of their attention was the altar, symbol of Christ’s sacrifice and the touchpoint between heaven and earth. Shrines and devotional altars abounded in medieval churches, but anything we might describe as a Blessed Sacrament chapel would be hard to find.

Amazingly, the Eucharist was first kept in private houses for the purpose of Holy Communion at home. As for church, the custom gradually developed of suspending a vessel shaped like a dove somewhere in the church, often over the altar. In the hovering bird, a few hosts, enough to satisfy the pastoral needs of the dying, would be secreted. The priest would lower the dove on a pulley as needed, but it wasn’t a focus of devotion by visitors to the church. It was simply a way of reassuring bishops who were nervous about safeguarding the Eucharist. TTrraaddiicciioonneess ddee NNuueessttrraa FFee: Esta semana recordamos el nacimiento de uno de nuestros propios héroes: César Estrada Chávez, quien nació en Arizona en 1927 y falleció en Los Ángeles, California en 1993. El racismo y la injusticia de su tiempo, obligaron a él y su familia a salir de su natal Arizona, pues sus padres perdieron sus tierras a causa de unos malhechores. En 1938 el destino lo llevó a Los Ángeles, al barrio “Sal, si puedes”. Con la ayuda de Dolores Huerta y otras personas, en 1962 fundó el movimiento sindical de campesinos que daría a luz a United Farm Workers para protestar por las injusticias que nuestro pueblo sufría en los viñedos, situación que bien puede describirse como barbarie. En dos ocasiones, en 1972 y en 1988 respectivamente, debido a que algunos compañeros del movimiento querían incurrir en la violencia para salir adelante, César hizo un ayuno de 24 y 36 días respectivamente.
