Bishop Coyle Appointed New Pastor of Good Shepherd
As announced at all the Masses last weekend,
Bishop Barres has appointed Auxiliary Bishop
Robert Coyle as the new pastor of Good
Shepherd Parish effective June 27. A
biography of Bishop Coyle may be found on
page 5, in today’s bulletin which includes his
27 years of priestly service primarily as a Navy
Chaplain in the Archdiocese of the Military and
for the past 5 years as a bishop in that capacity.
You might be wondering how a bishop gets to
become a pastor of a local parish. In larger
dioceses such as ours, it is not unusual for such
an appointment, particularly when there is a
shortage of priests and a bishop may be taking
on a variety of roles. Bishop Coyle brings with
him a broad range of priestly experience apart
from his military role. He served as an
associate pastor and for several years as pastor
of Corpus Christi Parish in Mineola before
being ordained a bishop.
In my recent conversation with the bishop he
expressed a real desire to return to parish
ministry especially in his home Diocese of
Rockville Centre. Despite his many travels, he
considers himself a native son of Long Island
having grown up in Syosset and having
attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in
Huntington. When I was on the seminary
faculty many years ago, I had Rob Coyle as a
student, and even then he distinguished himself
as a dedicated and faith-filled young man.
While Bishop Coyle will have traditional
Episcopal responsibilities such as officiating at
Confirmations in various parishes, his primary
focus will be Good Shepherd. I trust that you
will welcome Bishop Coyle as you welcomed
me and will support him in carrying out the
mission of the parish. After many years of
travel, he looks forward to settling down in his
home diocese and serving the people of God on
Long Island.
The other important news announced this past
weekend was the assignment of Fr. Lachlan
Cameron to serve as full-time campus chaplain
at Stony Brook University working in
conjunction with the Fellowship of Catholic
University Students (FOCUS). He will also be
advising the theology faculties of several
diocesan high schools.
At this point the appointment of the associate
pastor who will take Fr. Lachlan’s place has not
been made. This will be announced in the near
future.
These events point to significant changes in
the life of Good Shepherd Parish. A new chap-
ter is about to begin. Change evokes a range of
feelings: excitement, anxiety, uncertainty, hope
and so forth. We have all faced changes in our
lives, some of them expected others surprising.
But there are also constants in this picture and
they include: our Catholic faith, commitment to
the parish, generosity of talent, time and
treasure, love for the priesthood, and fidelity to
the call of Christ to be his disciples. I trust that
these constants will carry the parish through
this time of transition and bring the parish into
a new era of faith, hope, and love.

"Receive the Holy Spirit." The Gifts of The Holy Spirit are: wisdom,
understanding, knowledge, right judgement,
courage, reverence, and wonder and awe.
1. What gifts of the Spirit can you identify in
yourself that could help transform the world?
2. What gifts of the Spirit can you identify in
our community?
Bishop Coyle was born in Brooklyn in 1964, the son
of Robert and Kathryn Coyle. He is the product of a
life-long Catholic education. Bishop Coyle graduated
from Saint Edward Confessor Elementary School,
Syosset in 1978; Saint Mary’s Boys High School,
Manhasset in 1982; Fordham University, with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, in 1986 and
Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington with a
Master of Divinity in 1991 and Master of Arts degree
in Theology in 1998. He was ordained to the diocesan
priesthood by Bishop McGann in 1991 and served as
an associate pastor first in the parish of Saint
Dominick, Oyster Bay and then in the parish of Saint
Patrick, Glen Cove.
Bishop Coyle was commissioned an ensign in the
U.S. Navy on June 3, 1988 and served 24.5 years on active reserve duty before his retirement from
the Naval Reserve on January 1, 2013. Serving as a U.S. Navy Chaplain, Bishop Coyle was
deployed to the Middle East to serve on an aircraft carrier and to Norfolk, Virginia to care for the
spiritual needs of sailors and their families. During a three year assignment aboard the USS Harry
S. Truman aircraft carrier, Bishop Coyle deployed to the Middle East and served in Operation
Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then served as chaplain to the young men and
women studying at the Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point. While assigned to the USS
Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and deployed to Middle East for Operation Enduring
Freedom, Pope Benedict named him a chaplain of honor with the title of Monsignor in 2008 in
recognition of his outstanding service caring for the spiritual needs of Catholics and others of all
faiths in the U.S. Navy.
In February 2013, Pope Benedict XVI appointed then-Msgr. Coyle to be an auxiliary bishop of the
Archdiocese of the Military. At that time, Msgr. Coyle was serving as pastor of the parish of
Corpus Christi in Mineola. Bishop Coyle was ordained and installed as bishop by His Excellency,
the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services
on April 25, 2013.
Now 5 years later Bishop Coyle is returning to his home Diocese of Rockville Centre as auxiliary
Bishop with the approval of Pope Francis. In conjunction with his role as an auxiliary Bishop,
Bishop Barres has also appointed Bishop Coyle to be pastor of Good Shepherd Parish in Holbrook.
The appointment takes affect on June 27th, 2018.

The Ministry of Family Healing When was the last time you laughed with Jesus? That’s right laugh with Jesus.
When was the last time you celebrated joy with Jesus. We know what you are
thinking, we Catholic’s sometimes take ourselves and others too seriously. We don’t
have time to laugh with Jesus. We don’t have time to celebrate joy with Jesus, and
we certainly don’t have time to have fun with
Jesus. Well that’s just what we are asking you to do. Come and spend one night
enjoying Jesus. Have fun, laughter and even a few surprises with Jesus. We invite
you to spend a night filled with joy. Come and join us Wednesday, June 6, 7PM in
Fellowship Hall. We hope to see you then and please bring a friend.
