Stay the Lenten Course
We are halfway through Lent, so it might be
a good occasion to assess how we are doing
with our Lenten effort to turn from sin and
be faithful to the gospel. Our Lenten
intention may have taken the form of prayer
or fasting or works of charity. Perhaps you
may not have followed through as much as
you had hoped or perhaps not much
happened at all. This midpoint might be an
opportune time to get a fresh start or renew
your efforts as we move closer to Easter.
Lent is not about trying to impress God or
show off our spiritual prowess. The penance
we undertake is a recognition of our
dependence and brokenness and our desire to
be made whole. And when we fall short of
the goal, it reminds us that spiritual progress
is a lifetime process.
My niece works for an upscale health club
in Charlotte called “Lifetime.” It is one of a
chain of such clubs nationwide. People who
go to that facility –sometimes daily- don’t
expect to be perfectly physically fit with a
few visits. There is a constant need to keep
the body healthy and that lasts for a lifetime.
Our spiritual health requires a similar kind of
constancy and effort. Lent comes along to
remind us that we need to be ever vigilant in
remaining spiritual healthy. So hang in there!
The Value of a Council
The Pastoral Council has been a part of the
life of Good Shepherd for many years. It is
structured in such a way that there is a
rotation of members who serve for a term
of 3 years renewable for another 3 years.
I have found the council to be a significant
part of my ministry as pastor. The advice,
recommendations, and feedback from its
members allows me to get a sense of the
pulse of the parish, the needs of parishioners,
and the pastoral resources available. In
recent years the council has been involved in
such major undertakings as Dream Sunday
and more recently formulating our parish
vision statement and ways to implement that
vision.
Of the pastoral councils I have been
associated with, I have found the Good
Shepherd Council to be the most active and
the most valuable. There is always lively
discussion and good input. Its members have
a strong devotion to the parish and a desire
to be of service to parishioners.
In the bulletin this weekend (page 7) you
will find a nomination form for membership
on the council and a list of the desirable
qualities of a member. I invite you to
consider nominating someone you know or
yourself. With a new pastor coming to Good
Shepherd in June, this is a key moment in
the life of Good Shepherd and the role of the
pastoral council.

each plant are available on Good Shepherd website.
Pre-order forms must be submitted to the Parish office by Sunday April 1st with full payment
(cash or checks made out to Good Shepherd). To order online and pay with a credit card
visit www.goodshepherdrcchurch.org/plant-sale.html.
Additional plants will be available for purchase (first-come-first-served)

ity plants you will want to buy even more! All proceeds will be used to continue projects on our

Pastoral Council Role of the Pastoral Council:
1. Serves as a visioning body that works collaboratively with the Pastor and pastoral ministry
staff.
2. Maintains the integrity of the parish mission and the objectives and goals related to it through
on-going long range pastoral planning.
Serves as a forum of consultation for the Pastor primarily by engaging in on-going dialogue
about the needs, feelings, hopes and reactions of parishioners.
As two of our members will be completing 6 years of service this June, we are accepting
nominations for replacements. The term of service is three years, (excluding the need for a
member to resign), which is renewable for a consecutive term. Meetings are held once a month,
on the third Monday, excluding July and August. Please see the nomination form on page 7 in
this bulletin (more are available at the main office) and return them to the office no later than
April 8th.

St. Patrick’s Day Blessing
May your joys be as deep as the oceans,
your troubles as light as its foam.
And may you find sweet peace of mind,
Wherever you roam.
May your thoughts be as glad as the
shamrock.
May your heart be light as a song,
May each day bring you bright happy hours,
That stay with you all the years long. -via Norma Sims in Eustis, Fl
