Dear Friends,

Last week in Washington D.C. we had the annual Right to Life March. This is a peaceful and prayerful demonstration for all pro-life issues including, and especially for the hope that Roe versus Wade will be overturned. I was not able to attend this

year but I did see most of it on television and heard from many who did attend that it was a positive and productive day. Please pray for the respect and dignity for all human life, from the moment of conception through natural death.

Last week was a big week for the Scouts in our parish. The girl scouts spoke at our Masses asking for contributions so they can purchase Girl Scout cookies for our military, especially those serving in other countries. Although I do not have the final count, it seemed as though our parishioners were very generous. Thank you! Natalie Margro, Audrey Mikowski and Madeline Zehnter lead the charge and they were assisted by several other Girl Scouts. What a terrific thing to do for our troops. Thank you girls!

Four Boy Scouts also had spoken briefly regarding a pancake breakfast-fundraiser they were having downstairs. Dan Corcoran, and James, Connor and Ian Garvin presented their invitation to our parishioners. The proceeds go to the Boy Scouts for expenses they incur throughout the year. Although I was only able to go downstairs for a few minutes, they seemed very well organized and everyone was having a good time. Boys, thanks for a job well done!

Two weeks ago, the Little Sisters of the Poor had spoken at all five of our Masses. Pictured here are Sister Prisca and Sister Elisabeth Ann. They told us about the good work they do for the poor, the sick and the dying. The Sisters take care of every need of all residents, and they do it with love. Thanks to all of you we raised and sent them a check for over $7,000.00. Please continue to pray for the Little Sisters.

Next Saturday night, February 11th, the Kellenberg High School Teen band will be here

to play at our 5:00 P.M. Mass. This is a credit to their school and an honor to our parish.

Ash Wednesday is only a few weeks away. During the season of Lent, we have a Friday night 7:30 P.M. Mass and we pray the Stations of the Cross immediately after Mass. As we have done in the past, we are asking for our young people to participate in reading at the Stations of the Cross. This invitation is for anyone 10 years or older. If interested, please send me an email so I can plan accordingly. Please consider this, it’s a wonderful thing to do for God; and it’s actually a lot of fun too.

On Saturday, January 21, 2017, Bishop Jean-Claude Boulanger, Bishop of the Diocese of Bayeux-Lisieux, celebrated a Mass to commemorate the transfer of Servant of God Léonie Martin’s body from the crypt of the Visitation monastery to a new side-chapel in the church. This move, part of the canonization process for Léonie, will better facilitate pilgrims who come to the monastery to pray for her intercession. Father Antonio, postulator for the cause of Léonie Martin, expressed his belief that the initial investigation into her life will conclude in the next few months. “We expect that the historical commission will finish its work and that the two theologians chosen by the diocese will make their report. This report will then be sent to the Vatican and Léonie Martin will be declared ‘venerable.’”

So who is Leonie Martin? She is actually the sister of St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower, and one of the daughters of Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin. I have written about this family on other occasions, but I am always interested in any news of them because……as I have mentioned before…..I have a deep personal connection to St. Therese and her family. It is of course very unusual to have four canonized saints from one family…..but this was a very unusual family…….in that they recognized …….more than most of us do….the call to holiness. We are all called to be saints…and hopefully we all make it eventually….but there are some among us who answer that call more readily than others (Think: Mother Teresa, Padre Pio, and John Paul II,etc.).

So what made Leonie Martin “saint material”? Here is a little insight into her life. She was the middle girl of a family of five daughters. Her sisters were well educated and also very pretty. Leonie was a troubled child when she was growing up, and was not considered attractive. Her mother worried about her because she had temper tantrums which grew worse as she was getting older. She was actually expelled

from a couple of schools for being unruly and disruptive. It is more than likely that she had some level of autism. At that time autism was not understood the way it is today. As such Leonie’s education suffered and her social skills were very poor. Her mother…now St. Zelie…called her ‘my difficult one’…..and worried about her very much. Eventually she was home schooled, but only to a very basic level.

Her sisters…St. Theresa among them…..all entered the Carmelite Convent in Lisieux. Leonie’s emotional difficulties prevented her from joining them. She did however enter the Visitation Convent in Caen where her aunt was the Superior. It was there that she blossomed , working and praying each day….offering up everything for the greater glory of God. She grew in wisdom and patience, and became a source of comfort to all who knew her. This young woman who had faced so many difficulties in life had now found the path that God intended for her. She became something of a mystic, and was visited by many people asking for advice. Who would have thought that this ‘difficult one’ would become a source of strength and comfort for so many over the years? God does indeed work miracles among us…….even today……..if we are open to His Graces.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

DEACON LACHLAN

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Believe it or not, Religious Education for the 2016/17 school year is now more than half way completed. All students have recently taken their mid-term examinations with the results being good. However, more important than any assessment is the time spent learning about Jesus, the Apostles, Mary, and our Church.

Without a good religious foundation based upon Jesus, and who we are as His followers, what do we have? Let’s face it, not a whole lot! We live in a world that often looks upon “Church People,” especially Catholics, as “out of touch” or quaint for the positions/moral stands that we take. It is a world that tells us that success in life is all about ourselves and the acquisition of money, possessions and comfort.

Jesus tells us that this is not so, that to focus only upon what we see here, in this lifetime, is what is false…it is a scam, a misdirection that says that only this life matters, only ourselves matter. The message of Jesus, as seen in today’s gospel, is that we are “the light of the world.” Our light, as followers of Jesus, “must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” This was a revolutionary message when Jesus preached it, and it remains a revolutionary message today.

It is the message of Christ’s new commandment that “we love one another” as He loves us…and He loves us so much that he gave His life on the Cross so that we might have eternal life. That is the life that matters, our eternal life with Jesus in Heaven with God the Father. What a glorious message and promise we have in Christ!

That is the message we are trying to convey in Religious Education. That through Jesus, and his Church, we have the promise of everlasting life. This is a life that Jesus offers a share in right now. In the sacrifice of the Mass, we are called to receive the Eucharist and enter into communion with Jesus, and one another, each week. Through the Word of God, and most importantly in the Eucharist, Jesus comes to dwell in us. Our eternal life with Jesus has already begun, it is here right now. We don’t have to wait. If we can teach our children this lesson, that God is with us each day of our lives, we will be successful as teachers, parents/guardians and representatives of Christ on Earth.

What we believe as Catholics is not quaint, it is true freedom knowing that the message of love and caring for one another…loving one another as Jesus loves us…is what is truly important. Now that is a success story!

As always, thank you for supporting the young people of our parish and God’s Peace!

Mr. Hogan

“To those who suffer, God does not provide arguments which explain everything; rather, His response is that of an accompanying presence, a history of goodness which touches every story of suffering

and opens up a ray of light.”- Pope FrancisMore than 100 parish-based Outreach Programs bring a ray of light to thousands of

people in need every year.

Teresa, a proud mom of five sons needed help. When her husband was suddenly laid off from his job, the family began to struggle to make ends meet. As an active member of St. Barnabas in Bellmore, she knew

about the good work of the Outreach Program and reached out to them for help.

“The Parish Outreach has been there for me when I needed it. Recently, my son, who is in the Marine Corps, was coming home to visit – I didn’t have a bed or dresser in his room for him. The Outreach helped me with furniture and when he came home, it made me so happy to see the look on his face. Their help has also given me the opportunity to teach my sons the importance of giving back when you are able.”
