FAITH FORMATION

FEAST OF ST. JAMES, APOSTLE Patron of Pilgrims & Laborers

Tuesday, July 25

Nothing is known of St. James the Greater's early life, though it has been established that he is the son of Zebedee and Salome and brother of John the Evangelist. The title "the Greater" was added to St. James' name to distinguish him from the Apostle James "the Less," who is believed to have been shorter than James "the Greater." St. James the Greater was one of Jesus' first disciples. James was fishing with his father and John the Apostle when Jesus came to the Sea of Galilee and called for the fisherman, who were unable to catch any fish that day, to dip their nets in the water. When they did this, they found their nets full.

James was one of the three called by Jesus to witness his Transfiguration. Following Christ's Ascension, James spread the Gospel across Israel, the Roman kingdom and for nearly forty years in Spain. He returned to Jerusalem but was martyred by King Herod, who decapitated him. St. James the Greater is known as the first apostle to die. He was not allowed to be buried following his martyrdom so his remains were taken to Compostela, Spain. In the 9th century, his remains were discovered and moved to a tomb in Santiago de Compostela. Today, his remains can still be found in the Cathedral of Santiago. As Compostela is the most frequently visited place pilgrims go to following Rome and Jerusalem, Pope Leo declared it a shrine.

FEAST OF STS. JOACHIM & ANNE Patrons of Parents & Grandparents

Wednesday, July 26 By tradition, Joachim and Anne are considered to be the names of the parents of Mary, the Mother of God. There is no historical evidence,

however, of any elements of their lives, including their names. We get the oldest story from the Gospel of James, though in no way should this document be trusted to be factual. The legend told in this document says that after years of childlessness, an angel appeared to tell Anne and Joachim that they would have a child. Anne promised to dedicate this child to God.

Whatever their names or the facts of their lives, the truth is that it was the parents of Mary who nurtured Mary, taught her, brought her up to be a worthy Mother of God. It was their teaching that led her to respond to God's request with faith, "Let it be done to me as you will." It was their example of parenting that Mary followed as she raised her own son, Jesus. It was their faith that laid the foundation of courage and strength that allowed her to stand by the cross as her son was crucified and still believe.

FEAST OF ST. MARTHA

Patron of Cooks, Waiters, Homemakers Saturday, July 29

Martha was the sister of Mary and Lazarus. They lived in the little town of Bethany near Jerusalem. They were dear friends of Jesus, and He often came to visit them. One day, she was preparing a meal for Jesus and his disciples. She realized that the task would be easier if her sister would help. She watched Mary sitting quietly at Jesus' feet, listening to him. "Lord, tell my sister to help me," Martha suggested. Jesus was very pleased with Martha's loving service. However, he wanted her to know that listening to God's Word and praying is even more important. So he said gently, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious about many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part."

St. Martha's great faith in Jesus was seen when her brother Lazarus died. As soon as she heard that Jesus was coming to Bethany, Martha went to meet him. She trusted Jesus and said: "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Then Jesus told her that Lazarus would rise. He said, "whoever believes in me, even if he dies shall live…. Do you believe this?" And Martha answered, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” Jesus worked a great miracle and raised Lazarus from the dead.

Later, Jesus came again to have supper with Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Martha served them at table as always. This time, though, Martha had a much more loving attitude. She served with a joyful heart. Martha followed Jesus until the time of his crucifixion. It was then believed that Martha, Mary and Lazarus left Judea and went to France where she died in 84AD.

PARISH & COMMUNITY

NEW CHILDREN’S POLISH CHOIR!

A new Children’s Polish Choir performing Polish religious songs for children and youth is being formed

at our Parish. The choir will perform once a month, on every second

Sunday of the month, at the 9am Polish Mass. The first performance is planned for August 13th, the 2nd for September 10th, etc. The goal of the choir is to strengthen our faith through singing, to increase our knowledge of the Polish language and the Polish culture, and to fulfill the message of St. John Paul II that our children and our youth are the future of the Church. We welcome everyone willing to sing in this choir (children, youth, or adults willing to help us sing) and ask them to contact [email protected] or to fill out the form below and to return it to the Szymon Gil, our Director of Music Ministry. A few weeks before each performance an email will be sent to each choir member with links to five songs performed by other singing groups so that everyone willing to sing with us could practice those songs at home. An email of the text of those five songs will be sent as well. Choir rehearsals will take place at 8:30am before the Mass at which the choir will perform. Anyone playing musical instruments (melodic or non-melodic) are welcomed. Persons knowing only one or only a few of the five songs or those knowing only the refrains, and those who are only five years old, are all welcomed. Guitarists are also welcomed. CHILDREN’S POLISH CHOIR – Sign-up Form

(Please write clearly, especially in the email address line. Return form to Mr. Szymon Gil, Director of Music Ministry, who will forward it to Mrs. Katarzyna Kowal.)

""First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn."

In last Sunday’s Gospel, we heard about the parable of the sower; today we have three parables of the Kingdom: the weeds and the wheat, the mustard seed, and the yeast. Each of these parables gives us a glimpse of what God’s reign is like. It is not tidy – rather good and bad grow together, and like the weeds and the wheat there is no way to remove one without also destroying the other. God’s Kingdom starts small – like the mustard seed but leads to extraordinary results. Further, God’s Kingdom like yeast in dough is invisible yet it makes all the difference.

God's presence and reign is visible in the slow but steady process of God's “mastery over all things” (First Reading). Our own discernment of God's will for our lives, our growth in goodness, and our transformation into who God calls us to be is dependent upon God's care, justice, leniency, kindness, and forgiveness.

As we listen to God’s word in these parables, and have now cultivated our own gardens and prepare for the summer/fall harvests, it’s time to look at our own spiritual life. Have you received the Sacraments necessary to nourish and grow in your faith? RCIA is available for adults to become fully initiated in the Church. Is your marriage valid in the Catholic Church? Individuals, parents, grandparents, godparents: now is the time to prepare ourselves and our children for a place in God’s eternal vineyard!

God Bless you all. Have a wonderful and safe summer week. Fr. Jacek
