“Taking the loaves, Jesus said the blessing and gave them

to the disciples.” - Matthew 14:13-21

My dear parishioners, The miracle of the feeding of the five thousand by Jesus appears in all four gospels and is of great significance to the Christian community. Jesus feeds the human family with the Word of God and the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. All those who “have no money” …. all those who thirst, come to the living water of the friendship that Jesus offers to us. Often we find ourselves in need. It seems that we don’t have enough. If we let Him, Jesus can multiply the gifts we give generously to His service. Jesus takes the little we think we have, couples it with God’s grace … and suddenly there is more than enough. We are the people of God. Mindful of the responsibilities of our baptism, we seek to use our resources (talent, time, money) in a holy and proper way. In our sharing at Nativity, we are part of something life giving and meaningful. As a people of faith, we are called to be courageous, prophetic, confident and faithful. We are called to live in a world of possibilities – to think big … and never give up. In the miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus teaches us to “IMAGINE ABUNDANCE.” There is always more to be given and received. I will be going on vacation today for the next two weeks to spend time with friends and then family at the beach. It will be a time for rest, renewal and to enjoy God’s beautiful creation. Enjoy the summer days of renewal and recreation. It’s going to be an excit-ing new year of parish life that begins in September and God has great plans for us… be safe and well.

Pandemic Delayed, Did Not Stop First Holy Communion Day

During one of the hottest weeks of the summer -- and in the middle of a pandemic -- Father Bob and Nativity’s religious team gathered with more than 200 families at four special Masses throughout the week to ensure second graders received the Sacrament of First Holy

Communion. Most of our second grade class received the Sacrament in Church last Saturday afternoon.

During his Homily, Father Bob drew an analogy between our second graders’ first meals as infants -- in their parents’ arms, later seated in a high chair, eventually making their way to the family table as they grew, with the steps they were completing as part of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They began those steps by receiving God’s Blessing, studying, praying,

and today, and from this point on, they will share the sacred meal at the table of the Church. They will receive the bread of life -- the Eucharist.

Ms. Kelly, our school principal, and Mrs. Basselgia, our second grade teacher, were on hand for the event. Families were socially distanced and masked.

“We are so proud of our second graders,” said Mrs. Basselgia. “They have studied so faithfully, purposefully -- and they have persevered. This is a great day!”

Father ended the Mass with a special message: “I think on this side of Heaven, the closest you can get to Heaven is to be next to a child

on their First Communion Day… because God is so close to them.”

Not to worry. Six feet away still counts.
