God Does Much with Little Today’s gospel is the familiar story of the mysterious multiplication of the loaves and fishes to feed a hungry crowd. It is the only miracle to appear in all four gospels. Matthew tells the story twice. This gospel is seen as anticipating the Eucharist and the heavenly banquet. It also points us back to the feeding of the Israelites with manna in the desert at the time of the Exodus. This is a gospel story about what God can do. Only God can take our simple offerings and transform them into something wonderful. This is what happens in every celebration of the Eucharist when we repeat Jesus’ actions of taking, blessing, breaking, and giving. When have you experienced God doing something wonderful with little things you have? How does the celebration of the Eucharist help you to keep your eyes open to great things God can do?

Fr. Tom Krenik

Reflection by Chris Sorensen, Pastoral Minister Advent has been my favorite liturgical season since I was a child. The Advent hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" has been one of my most loved hymns since learning it in the children's choir of my home parish ,St. Mary of the Hills. You may be wondering why I am thinking of "Advent" in July! In a book I am reading I came across a quote from the Lutheran theologian and pastor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, from an Advent sermon he had given on Mary's powerful prayer the Magnificat. Mary, awaiting the birth of her baby, rejoices in her God who is a God of greatness, mercy and justice. This set my mind to reflecting on waiting - a theme we often hear preached during Advent. What am I waiting for? Right now I am waiting to hold and hug my granddaughter, Cora, who lives in Nashville, TN. I am yearning to have hugs and close-up visits with my three grandchildren in Owatonna. I am waiting to go home to Massachusetts to spend time with my extended family and lifelong friends and to put my toes into the Atlantic Ocean. I am waiting to continue Communion services at our care facilities and to have the ability to visit people in the hospital and to sing at Mass. These days of pandemic have us all in waiting for safer, healthier days. We all wait for our new normal and what that will look like. I suggest that, as we wait, we reflect on the promise of hope that Advent holds out for us. We wait in Advent hope for God's light to break through these pandemic days while we also stay attentive to God's light with us- trusting in the words of John's Gospel The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5).

2 Thessalonians 3:13 And as for you, brothers and sisters,

never tire of doing what is good. Zoom meetings have been a gift during these times. My preference is to meet face to face but, if that can't happen, just being able to see other people on a screen warms my heart. In a recent meeting with the Pastoral Care Commission and another with our BeFriender ministers, I was so moved and grateful for the generosity of time and care so many of our members here at Risen Savior provide to God's people. Phone calls, cards and emails are concrete signs of connection in these limiting times. Thank you to all of you who take the time to be an incarnate sign of the love of our God.

Do you know of someone who would appreciate the gift of a prayer shawl or quilt as a sign of being held in prayers and God's love? We have a beautiful selection created by members of our Prayer Shawl and Peacemakers ministries.

Please call our Pastoral Minister, Christine Sorensen, at (952) 698-1722, for more information or simply stop in to our parish office to pick up a prayer shawl or quilt.

Risen Savior Youth Ministry Is Looking for

Young Adult Volunteers Staff is currently working on various forms of curricula, in-person, online/virtual, and a hybrid of both forms, as the COVID-19 situation remains uncertain. In order to provide the best possible programming and ministry experience for our youth, we are currently seeking volunteers, especially young adults, to assist with Youth Ministry. Please consider sharing your time with our Risen Savior youth. If you are interested and/or would like more information, please contact Rae Ann Konkol at (952) 698-1727 or email [email protected].

We have a new date: on Sunday, September 12, 2021, Archbishop Hebda will be at Risen Savior to help us celebrate the culmination, the “grand finale,” of Risen Savior’s 50th Anniversary year at the 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Masses. After much discussion and deliberation, we (Fr. Tom and staff) had decided to postpone the Risen Savior 50th Anniversary celebration with Archbishop Hebda as well as the Charter Member Mass and celebration until September 2021 due to the still very uncertain COVID-19 situation. This was done so that in September 2021, it [hopefully] can be a "real celebration" with many people taking part in the festivities and without restrictions on attendance numbers for the Masses with the Archbishop. And so, Fr. Tom contacted the Archbishop to reschedule and to ask him to record a video message for us to play at Masses and on YouTube on this year's date of September 20, 2020 as a congratulatory kick-off for the celebration year. The Archbishop responded quickly and let us know that he will indeed record a video for us and that he will be at Risen Savior next year on September 12, 2021 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary year. Throughout the year, we will produce various online/virtual features in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary. The Community Sharing Commission is working on some exciting projects to keep everyone connected and enthusiastic about Risen Savior ’s 50th Anniversary. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available. Contact Marianne Brass at [email protected] or call (952) 698-1714 if you have questions regarding Risen Savior’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

Pope Francis exhorts us with these words: “My friends, we cannot turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion of any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life.” (Message to the U.S. June 3, 2020). And so we pray:

God of Heaven and Earth, you created the one human family

and endowed each person with great dignity.

Aid us, we pray, in overcoming the sin of racism. Grant us your grace in eliminating this blight from our hearts,

our communities, our social and civil institutions. Fill our hearts with love for you and our neighbor

so that we may work with you in healing our land from racial injustice.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Copyright © 2018, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. All Rights Reserved. Centering Prayer Since the parish pandemic shutdown in March, we have not offered an in-person group experience of Centering Prayer. We continue to wait to resume in-person gatherings but encourage you to continue your practice at home on your own. If you’re not familiar with Centering Prayer, you might find that this method of receptive, silent prayer will bear fruit in other prayer practices you already may have, in your relationships, and in your own sense of well-being and groundedness. For resources on Centering Prayer, we recommend Minnesota Contemplative Outreach at minnesotacontemplativeoutreach.org/centering-prayer. You can also find resources on our Risen Savior Adult Formation website or contact Grace Koleczek.

Searching for a Spiritual Home? Join us on the journey! No matter your personal history, age, income, gender, race, ethnicity, marital situation, or status in the Catholic Church, you are invited, accepted, and respected here at Risen Savior. If you are seeking community, have questions about faith, or are exploring your relationship with God please contact Grace Koleczek, Adult Faith Formation and Social Justice Coordinator, to set up a time to talk about your experience and what you are seeking. No commitment required.

Save the Date! Fall Scripture Study: Prophetic Imagination, Witness, and Hope Mark your calendars for Tuesday evenings beginning September 22 through October 27, 2020 to join us for a Fall series on biblical prophetic voices and what they have to teach us today. This series will meet virtually and will require access to Zoom. More information and sign-ups coming soon!

In February, Risen Savior participated in a parish-wide survey, the Disciple Maker Index. Due to the pandemic shutdown, our timeline for receiving and analyzing our results was pushed back; however, we are excited to begin sharing the results! Across the Archdiocese, 28,749 individuals responded, which is more than any other diocese in the past seven years the survey has been run! 189 of our parishioners completed the survey, which is a 10% response rate of our average weekly Mass attendance prior to the pandemic! Those numbers compare favorably with the other participating parishes as well.

More detailed analysis of the complete survey results will be released in the coming weeks as we continue to unpack the data and discern its implications. Thank you to all who took the time to participate in the Disciple Maker Index survey. It is an important piece of the puzzle to help us as a parish understand our strengths and challenges and to help Archbishop Hebda as he leads our local Church forward through the Synod Process. Find more information about the Synod at risensavior.org/synod.

August 2, 2020 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Many people in our world are hungry and thirsty. This hunger and thirst go well beyond physical needs for food, security, and shelter. Many are emotionally and spiritually parched, too. Behind every act of violence is a soul who hungers. People live with relat ionships that actually starve them. They are abused, exploited, disrespected, laughed at, and marginalized. There is a lot of confusion and inner pain that needs to be acknowledged and expressed. We all long to be understood and loved, even when our inner demons or who I am make it difficult to be. Do you live with inner confusion and pain? Folks often wander through life without any real direction or purpose and take their cues from what seems satisfying or popular at the moment. The deeper dots of our lives can easily remain unconnected, and we can find ourselves without grounding, purpose, or real happiness. Life becomes shallow and without real purpose as we hunger and thirst for an ultimate love. It’s easier to see the physical hungers and thirsts. We try to respond to these as best we can. Much more needs to be done. With all that God’s earth can provide, nobody ought to face sleep at night with a belly that’s empty. It’s sinful. It’s unjust. But isn’t all hunger unjust? It doesn’t need to be, and it should not be. Just as no one ought to be physically hungry and thirsty, there is really no need to be emotionally or spiritually deficient either. We have so many opportunities right at our fingertips, it is just easier to try to satisfy our emotional and spiritual hungers and thirst by acting on impulse or self-indulgence, carelessly following passions, or by seeking self-destructive ways to dull the ache of emptiness. Folks need to know where to look for nourishment and need the right friends to help them find it. We may not think that we have enough to respond to and to satisfy all of the needs, but we do. It doesn’t take much. Five loaves and two fish provided for a huge crowd. With God, all things are possible. Our faith provides the direction for where God’s children must go to find the nourishment they seek. It also tells us how to structure life so that justice and equity can be a reality for all. It also tells us how to respond to pain, sinfulness, and confusion. Come to the water and then help another get there.

ummer Volunteer Opportunity

Last summer, Risen Savior volunteers stepped up every Monday to serve healthy lunches to local children through the Open Door’s Mobile Lunch Box program. This summer, with health and safety precautions in place due to COVID-19, the Open Door modified their method but is still working to make sure children in our communities have a stable food source. The Open Door has set a goal of providing 30,000 lunches and 800 snack packs to children this summer! There are various ways to serve: as a driver/deliverer, by packing snacks and dropping them off to the donation site, or by donating financially to the Mobile Lunchbox campaign. For more information on all of these opportunities, go to https://risensavior.org/volunteer-opps/open-door-pantry-mobile-lunchbox-summer-2020/. NOTE: Please donate directly to the Open Door Pantry, not through Risen Savior. Thank you!

If you are unable to volunteer or donate, please consider praying for the success of this program and for an end to hunger.

A Mealtime Prayer for the Hungry (from Catholic Relief Services): Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts: the gift of food, for us and for others; of generosity, that when we have plenty, none should go hungry the whole world over; the gift of hearts that grow in humility and compassion for each of your children who suffer misfortune; the gift of your love that extends our reach, and would not deny your gifts to another. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
