Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 17, 2021

“What do you wish me to do for you?” Whether we realize it, this is a question God is always asking. It’s an important question because

the answer we provide will reveal a great deal about where our hearts lie. Our requests of God can often appear very noble and altruistic.

They consist of requests for healing for someone in need of prayers, successful resolution of a personal conflict, assistance in

overcoming a disease and myriad other desires for both ourselves and others. We are especially concerned about those we love and can

easily find ourselves bringing their struggles to God for a hearing in our prayer. Is that really all that prayer is about? The woman in

today’s Gospel, having been put in her place by Jesus, was only looking out for the wellbeing of her sons. She was doing what mothers

do, protecting and securing the livelihood of her children. But she was sadly mistaken, her request was not granted. We all make this

same misguided mistake from time to time. The goal of prayer is not to convince God of the worthiness of our agenda or to gain a

hearing. Sometimes we believe that the more we multiply our prayers or discover the right combination of supplications that we will

receive more of God’s attention. That’s not how it works. Even though God desires to hear, know, and be an intimate part of what is on

our minds, it goes much deeper. What we need from God is a relationship. It’s a relationship that guides and immerses us in the very

stuff of life and in the direction of the Gospel. This relationship sees God’s kingdom and agenda, not our own, as what is most

important. It builds the strength of character necessary to bring God’s Gospel into a world that may not receive it with open arms. It may

cause us discomfort and suffering. We are asked to heroically journey with God through suffering, hardship, ridicule, and even death!

Ultimately, our desire from God must become our desire for God. It is only when this happens that the powerful words “thy will be

done” will be found with sincerity and humility on our lips. Whatever God wishes becomes what we wish as we see this glorious union

of wills. Our humble lives will then become powerful witnesses, and what happens to us in God’s eternal kingdom the result of his

mercy. We become true servants and find ourselves discovering God’s definition of success. That definition has nothing at all to do with

status, income, or privilege. ©LPi

Father Chuck’s Homily:

Today’s reading are very interesting – in a way they are an early set-up for Advent, about

6 weeks away, and we are given a reminder of the who and what and how of Jesus – who

Jesus was, what Jesus did, and how Jesus did it. It’s like a subtle early reminder for

us.

Who was Jesus? “Jesus, the Son of God. . .” says the letter to the Hebrews “. . . who

sympathizes with our weaknesses, who has similarly been tested in every way, yet

without sin.” Jesus was born human and divine, so he knows what it’s like to live in the

world, yet have a tug for the holy – he knows the conflicts we face in the world, in or

relationships, in ourselves. He’s not some distant unapproachable figure.

What did he do? “The Lord crushed him in his infirmity . . . he gave his life as an

offering for sin . . . through his suffering he justified many . . . and he bore our guilt.” If

anyone doesn’t think Isaiah isn’t talking about Jesus, they need to read it again. This

by the way is a good example of what is called ‘prefiguring’ – when a passage of the Old

Testament prefigures, or points toward something or someone in the new. Isaiah is full

of those kinds of references, as are the psalms: Psalm 22 especially: all who see me

mock me they curl their lips and jeer they shake their heads and say: "you relied on

God, let him deliver you if he loves you let him rescue you . . . they divide my garments

among them, for my clothing they cast lots. and of course: My God, my God why have

you abandoned me.” The problem with that is that often people find prefigurings where

they don’t exist and then everything in the OT refers to the NT and you loose the beauty

and richness of the OT. But we have without a doubt a reference forward to Jesus and

his major work – his offering of himself as sacrifice for us that we might have access to

heaven and eternal life.

And the How of Jesus: How he did what he did: he taught, he preached and he

corrected, as he does in today’s Gospel. The disciples, as they usually do in Mark, don’t

get it yet. They’re still off base with their ideas of the ‘kingdom’. Jesus teaches and

corrects at the same time. They (and we) are not to worry about success or position or

any of those worldly achievements, either for themselves or others. worry about one

thing alone: how you are living your faith, how you are following Jesus, the God made

man who suffered and died for you, how you are serving others and in serving others,

serving him.

Today’s reading really are the equivalent of homework in preparation for Advent. If we

begin now to reflect on and think on Jesus, then when Advent arrives in about two

months, we’ll already be in the habit of reflecting and our continuing Advent reflections

will be that much deeper and that much more meaningful. The Letter to the Hebrews

says: “Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace

for timely help.” What better way can there be to prepare ourselves to approach the

throne, than by continuous reflection on Jesus – his who, his what and his how, and

how WE reflect that in our lives.

The Our Lady of Grace statue is available to visit

your home. We

have made

adjustments for

the current

pandemic which

includes a non-

contact visit. It

is a turbulent

time when we

all need our hope and our faith more than ever

before as we call upon Mary for our protection

and petitions. Is Our Lady pulling at your heart

and prompting you to call for her visit to your

home? Believe there is a reason. Please do not

delay, call to schedule a visit to your home to Sr.

Angel Sauro, Legion of Mary, at: (856)-461-3873

home or (609)-234-8955 cell number.

Good Sunday to you

First, let me thank everyone who

participated in the Reverse Raffle. Although we

did not sell all 200 entries, we got close.

Considering we had a very short time to plan and

implement it, the fundraiser was a success.

Thank you and congratulations to all the

winners. I’ll publish a report shortly.

Second, the Super 50/50 is over

$14,000. That translates to a first prize of

approximately $4,500.00; a second prize at

$2,250.00 and a third prize of $750.00. We have

about 6 weeks before the raffle ends, so there’s

still time to get that total and the prizes up! Let’s

pray and work towards this being the best

50/50/ ever.

Third, the Christmas Bazaar planning

is moving forward. We have close to thirty

crafters and vendors signed up officially, the

Granny’s Attic people are gearing up, and I’m

still hoping to get some live music arranged.

And last, not a parish event, but the

Porch Club has a “Shopping Spree” event on the

25

th

from 6:00 pm -9:00 pm – why not stop by

and see what their vendors are offering.

Now on to some business. Godparents.

We’ve had few issues lately with choosing

godparents. I want to remind you that to 1.

There must be at least 2 – one of each sex to

mirror the parents, 2. to be a godparent the

person must be: over 16 AND confirmed AND, if

married, married in the Church. A non-Catholic

can be what we call a ‘Christian witness’ but the

other must be a Catholic. In the past I’ve had

people complain about ‘the rules’ and I ask this:

the person you have chosen will stand before the

Tabernacle and the altar of God and declare that

they are willing to give good witness, although

they are not currently doing so. Do you want

them to lie to God? Yes, there are rules, but the

rules are there for reason. Being a godparent is

more than social, more than an expression of

your love or respect. It is a spiritual role that

involves the child, the parents, and the

godparents. And so there are rules, and we stick

by the rules.

I pray you have a safe and blessed week. . .

Father Chuck

Before His Throne

This reading in Hebrews today is such a beautiful

encouragement to us. Those this letter was addressed

to, the Hebrew people, understood the role of the high

priest. He was their intercession between them and

God. Of course the great high priest is Jesus our Lord

and Savior.

Because of taking on the personhood of man, Jesus

was familiar with all the frailties of humanity. He

knew what hard work was like. He knew the struggles

of survival, and the exhaustion at the end of a day.

His feet and skin got uncomfortable with the sweat

and toil of each day. And through his suffering, He

knew the hurts of rejection, the humiliation of

mocking, and the pain in His body. Yes, He knew our

poverty that He would come in the most humble form

as an infant to reveal our need to depend on Him.

When we have gone through something ourselves, we

are most understanding when others are experiencing

the same thing. We are more compassionate. This is

the magnificent wisdom of God that He allows us to

have a share in the pain in the body of Christ and to

share His compassion.

With all this we can come to our most compassionate

Lord, we can approach His throne. How?

Confidently, with blessed assurance of what Jesus did

for us. We can come to His throne to receive merciful

grace and help.

It is before His throne that the changes needed in us

take place. The deepest parts of our hearts are

exposed to Him and His beauty transforms us! His

love pierces our hearts and enters in! In a brief

moment, He does laser surgery on our hearts.

In this transforming love of God, before His throne

we become servants we no longer fall into the trap of

James and John, we no longer seek to place

ourselves first. But we are true followers of Jesus

Christ who became the slave and servant of all. We

too, are brought into a fuller understanding of not

being here to be served, but to serve.

Do you ever feel like the world has gone crazy and

there’s nothing you can do about it? Almighty God

can! And you can pray.

Prayerful presence outside an abortion clinic has

been proven to impact “no show” rates for abortion

appointments up to 75%.

The Cherry Hill Women’s Center’s website says:

“CHWC is proudly the only Ambulatory Surgical

Center (ASC) in New Jersey that offers abortion care

up to 25 weeks of pregnancy” -that’s 6 months! 200+

abortions are done there each week. As Christians,

we must stand up to this evil!

Join us for the FALL 40 Days for Life Campaign

from September 22-October 31.

Please go to 40daysforlife.com/cherryhill to sign up

for a weekly hour to pray peacefully and offer hope to

abortion minded women. Ask your spouse or a friend

to sign up with you! Our goal is to have 2 people

pray peacefully each hour 7am – 7pm for the

duration of the campaign and we need volunteers to

join our 40 Days for Life family. If you have

questions or concerns, need a prayer partner or need

We Catholics are blessed each Easter Vigil to witness the

initiation of new members into our Church with the

Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. For

the new members, the Neophytes, the Easter Vigil is the

culmination of their preparations. For some, their

preparation began with a small whisper of God’s call to their

heart; a call that is always present. For others, it was a direct

invitation by a Catholic, using their gift of Evangelization.

However they received the calling, they answered it openly

and contacted the Church.

Each Catholic parish has a Faith group called the RCIA. This

group is designed to guide those answering God’s call to the

Church through their final months of preparation. The RCIA

team consists of clergy and lay Catholics who come together

with the inquirers each week to share the beautiful Faith of

Catholicism. The group discusses the Sunday readings and

talk about topics such as liturgy, the Sacraments, prayer,

and Church history. The goal of the RCIA is to build a

personal relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord.

If you or someone you love wishes to join the Catholic

Church, let this be an invitation to you. We welcome you!

please call the Parish Office at 8290090 or email Matthew

sorrow. In doing so, we extend an invitation and

opportunity to learn positive ways to cope with loss,

when a loved one has passed away. We minister the

Love of Christ in letting all those who are grieving

realize that they are not alone.

Halloween

Finding Truth in Halloween

Did you ever stop to think how crazy Halloween is?

Who came up with this idea? Why do we celebrate

like we do? It has its roots in our Christian

background.

All Hallows Eve is the name that Halloween comes

from, meaning every, holy/saints, night before.

Dressing up like ghost and goblins was done by

children to mock death, making fun of evil because

Jesus Christ won the battle over sin and death.

Visiting neighborhood homes asking for candy started

as a way to pray for the dead. Beggars would go door

to door promising to pray for the deceased members of

a family in exchange for some food or a treat.

All Saints Celebration

All Saints Day, teach your children their

faith by celebrating All Saints Day.

Bring your children to the 6:30 PM, All

Saints Mass, Monday, November 1

st

wearing their favorite Saints Costume.

Speak with them about being a witness to

WALKING WITH PURPOSE IS RETURNING!

There has been a change in the bible study and we

excitingly look forward to

OPENING OUR HEART: The Starting point.

This Bible study will take you on an exciting journey

closer to the heart of God!

Opening Your Heart is an incredibly effective guide to

deep, lasting transformation of the heart and we

encourage all participants new to Walking with

Purpose to begin here, regardless of previous

experience with Bible

study.

In this modern day we see the lack of TRUTH all

around us and when God’s truth is absent chaos,

confusion, and division occur.

Join us as we explore the core questions that we need

to wrestle with if we want to experience all that God

has for us.

How can I conquer my fears?

What is the role of the Holy Spirit in my life?

What does the Eucharist have to do with my

friendship with Christ?

What are the limits of Christ’s forgiveness?

Why and how should I pray?

What is the role of suffering in my life?

What challenges will I face in my efforts to follow

Jesus more closely?

We hope you can join us! We will meet on Thursdays

at the Family Center at 7 pm starting on

OCTOBER 21st!! Please contact Thereese or Donna

with questions and to register. A book will need to be

purchased from the WWP website and will not need to

start on the first night. Email:[email protected]
