Catholic Campaign for Human Development

Please be generous in this week’s special collection, which supports the Catholic Campaign for Human Devel-opment. In the United States, one in six people live in powerty. Through this collection you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustaina-ble future for people across the country who struggle. In addition, 25% of the funds we collect will remain in our diocese to fund local antipoverty projects. Please prayer-fully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information about the Catho-lic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.cchdeastbay.org.

Stewardship Corner The collection total for the weekend Nov. 16th & 17th will be on the December bulletin. Thank you for continuing in your stewardship role of providing for the upkeep of our parish community.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On this date in 335 two churches and a shrine erected by Constantine over the empty grave of Jesus and over the place of the crucifixion were dedicated. After these were destroyed by the Persians in 614, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which still stands, was erected by the Crusad-ers in 1149. Today also commemorates the event that led to the building of the churches dedicated in 335: the dis-covery of the "true cross" by St. Helena, Constantine's mother, in 326. According to one legend, St. Helena traveled to Jerusalem on pilgrimage, in search of the true cross. Workers she hired dug through a pagan temple that had been erected on the site of the Crucifixion by Hadrian and found three crosses. A dying woman was brought in, and touched by each cross in succession, the last of which healed her. Hel-ena ordered that this cross be divided in three parts, one to be kept in Jerusalem and the other two to be sent to Con-stantinople and Rome. The pieces in Jerusalem and Con-stantinople were ultimately lost. Slivers were taken from the portion that went to Rome until eventually it was scat-tered around the world. Of course, the significance of the true cross lies not in the wood itself but in the burden that it bore. As a faithful Christian, what crosses do you accept in your life today? --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

POLLUTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE

#27. Other indicators of the present situation have to do with the depletion of natural resources. We all know that it is not possible to sustain the present lev-el of consumption in developed countries and wealthier sectors of society, where the habit of wast-ing and discarding has reached unprecedented levels. The exploitation of the planet has already exceeded acceptable limits and we still have not solved the problem of poverty. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: One of the principal reasons for the present assault on the Amazonian Basin is that we have depleted our natural resources in other areas of our beloved plan-et. Any of us who have grown up on farms big or small, even if we garden on a very small scale, know well that you have to husband carefully your re-sources and nurture the one who is nurturing you. Otherwise, you find yourself tilling barren ground. This is what we are not doing even with water which is as precious to us as the air we breathe. And we have done this even before we have provided enough food and clean water for everyone. Greed must give way to compassion
