October Synod on Marriage I want to thank those of you who took the time to answer the questionnaire that the Bishop put on line for us regarding Marriage and the Family. This was done seeking input for the Pope and the Synod bishop delegates when they gather in Rome this October for the Synod on Marriage and the Fami-ly. They have sought input from all levels of the Church’s life. Tomorrow, Monday the 23rd , is the last day that this survey can be completed. So, if you have not done so yet, please take time today to answer the questions on line to the best of your ability. It can be found in both English and Spanish at: www.oakdiocese.org/survey. Your input is im-portant for the Synod and for what we do as a diocese to sup-port family life.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#69 Challenges to inculturating the faith It is imperative to evangelize cultures in order to inculturate the Gospel. In countries of Catholic tradition, this means encouraging, fostering and reinforcing a richness which al-ready exists. In countries of other religious traditions, or profoundly secularized countries, it will mean sparking new processes for evangelizing culture, even though these will demand long-term planning. We must keep in mind, howev-er, that we are constantly being called to grow. Each culture and social group needs purification and growth. In the case of the popular cultures of Catholic peoples, we can see defi-ciencies which need to be healed by the Gospel: machismo, alcoholism, domestic violence, low Mass attendance, fatal-istic or superstitious notions which lead to sorcery, and the like. Popular piety itself can be the starting point for healing and liberation from these deficiencies. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Every institution is trying to find ways to get their message to people. Just think of how much they pay for a 30 second advertisement at the Super Bowl!! People are inundated with 'messages' from all angles which are loaded with emotional content. We all have to develop our own form of resistance or avoidance to survive the deluge. Religion is no exception, each of us has his or hers umbrella that only let in what we want. It is easy to sympathize with those who have their special bunkers and refuse to be moved. Pope Francis is proving to be a formida-ble invader of all sorts of defensive mechanisms so we should listen to him when he advises us on Evangelization. People generally take a good time to learn, grow and change. Then we need to do some long-term planning. Our defense systems has over the years become rusty in some areas and needs upgrading or renewing. Popular devotions can be very helpful in helping us to understand and incultur-ate. Different cultures are infected by machismo, alcoholism, domestic violence, low Mass attendance and superstitious notions. Let us recognize our flaws and let us begin our own renewal.
