Confirmation Swimming Against the Tide

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MEET THE CANDIDATE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Maybe, by now, you can tell that this humble writer Loves Teenagers …

Children of all ages for that matter. BUT, other than kids, DOGS are my passion! And, today’s girls might just agree with me ...

RACHEL FALLAGO CAHATOL shares her home and her heart with Oreo and Harley, her two dachshunds. Rachel, a new 16-year-old, is a Sophomore at Castro Valley High School where Biology is her favorite subject, and she is an “officer-in-training” at the TRO (Teens Reaching Out) club. This youngest child (brother, Nevin, was confirmed here in 2012) likes to dine on “Ice cream!!!” and “Mom’s spaghetti”. Other Rachel favorites include, The Elephant Bar, The Regular Show, YouTube and Read-ing...especially Graceling by Kristin Cashore; the story of Katsa, a smart, beautiful teenager who lives in a world where selected people are given Grace (sounds just like our Rachel). When asked to name a most important person in her life, Rachel answered, “My older brother, Nevin”. We were truly Graced, when Rachel chose to join our Confirmation program. SIENA CARMELA SCOPPETTA is a fan of the teeny, tiny dog, especially one named Rocco, a 5 lb. Chihuahua who shares her home. This wonderful 15-year-old is also a Sophomore, but Siena attends Moreau Catholic, where Math is her favorite subject. Si-ena, the older of the two Scoppetta girls, is one busy lady, as she lists her school activities as Student Ambassador, Culinary Arts Club, and the Italian Club (dad must be most proud of those last two as he owns Italian Restaurants in the city) as well as being a member of the school Rally Squad as a Song Girl. Other Siena hits are the SF Giants and Niners, Latin Music and Sushi. Her favor-ite vacation destination is Italy, to visit family and, of what is Siena most proud? The fact that she is a Ballroom Dancer! … Amaz-ing! An almost lost art, kept alive right here in our Confirmation Class!

We sometimes think that certain people have a gift for picking really Great dogs...but in this case I would have to say that some lucky dogs have a gift for picking really Great teenagers!

Thank you for advertising in our bulletin. We appreciate your support!

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#65 Some cultural challenges Despite the tide of secularism which has swept our socie-ties, in many countries – even those where Christians are a minority – the Catholic Church is considered a credible institution by public opinion, and trusted for her solidarity and concern for those in greatest need. Again and again, the Church has acted as a mediator in finding solutions to problems affecting peace, social harmony, the land, the defence of life, human and civil rights, and so forth. And how much good has been done by Catholic schools and universities around the world! This is a good thing. Yet, we find it difficult to make people see that when we raise other questions less palatable to public opinion, we are doing so out of fidelity to precisely the same convictions about human dignity and the common good. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Only yesterday a lovely kind Catholic man said to me: "Can you stop Pope Francis talking?'' This is exactly what the Pope is telling us in this week's piece #65. We love it when our Church opens schools and clinics to teach our children and care for our sick. We are rightly proud and support St. Vincent De Paul and all they do to help the poor. We even cheer and stomp when Notre Dame clobbers the opposition. There is so much good our Church does worldwide, that even secular govern-ments and leaders are appreciative. We can hold our heads high and puff our 'mighty biceps.' But start asking why millions upon millions are in dire poverty? Why so many of our brothers and sisters are sick ?Why do we have to be al-ways at war? How come we have money for bombs and guns but not for food and medicine? And suddenly even our devout Catholics want to know why have stopped praying and joined the communist party? To be Catholic, to be Christian is to believe that Jesus by his birth shares intimately with every person, and their good or ill is vital to Him and to us. Jesus said: ''you cannot serve God and Mammon''. Just watch us!!!
