A friend of the family, Skyler Lancaster, was also baptized. All five of these brothers and sisters in Christ joined the fellowship of Barry Christian Church through the affirmation of their confession of faith the Sunday prior, on August 30 th . Although it is very easy for all of us to be lulled by the routine of our own regular attendance in worship, Sunday School and various fellowship and ministry events that make up our involvement in the church of Jesus Christ at Barry, we can never underscore enough the significance of one’s confession of faith and baptism. All of us should remember the date of our confession, for it is the symbolic moment in which we rejoice in our new birth in Christ Jesus whom we celebrate as Lord and Savior! For Jesus said of himself as he was closing up his time with the disciples at the Lord’s Supper and just before the start of his journey to the cross: “I am the say, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.” Jesus’ words are undeniable and should give us a burdensome desire to expressly share our faith journey with family, friends and acquaintances who may benefit from our witness. As I mentioned this past Sunday in my message, in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we believe that Baptism is first, an act of obedience following Christ’s example of symbolic cleansing from one’s sins. Secondly, Baptism is an image of the sinful, self-centered self, dying as we are fully immersed in water and an image of the raising up of the new self, committed to a life of Christian service. This is affirmed by Paul as he writes: “By our baptism then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life” (Romans 6:4). And thirdly, just as the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus as he rose from the water, (Matthew 3:16) we affirm that we too receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit’s guidance as we arise from the waters of our own baptism. So you see, the last Sundays have been glorious times of worship for all of us at Barry Christian Church, primarily because we have celebrated the most central tenants of our faith: the confession of faith and baptism. And as you journey through your routine tasks over the weeks of this fall season, may you genuinely seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance as you share the witness of your faith or as you welcome others to join you for Sunday worship. For you, yes you; may be the key person who, by the Spirit’s guidance, will bring another into a living and most meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. See you this Sunday! Pastor Dennis

Ponderings of Patience - Celebrating Confessions of Faith and Baptism! This past Sunday, September 6th, we had the privilege of celebrating the Service of Baptism for five new members of Barry Christian Church during the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service. It was our joy to share in this ordinance of Christian faith with Joshua Christenson and his wife, Kyla and their two daughters, Kayleigh and Kallie.

As I mentioned this past Sunday in my message, in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we believe that Baptism is first, an act of obedience – following Christ’s example of symbolic cleansing from one’s sins. Secondly, Baptism is an image of the sinful, self-centered self, dying as we are fully immersed in water and an image of the raising up of the new self, committed to a life of Christian service. A message from our Family Life Director – Jim Frentrop

There are a lot of “if onlys” when planning for a sustainable youth ministry. If only

we had nicer sofas in the youth room. If only we had a gym. If only we had a

contemporary worship service. If only we had more cute girls to attract more boys,

and vice versa. If only we had a dynamite curriculum with fun materials and cool

videos. And if only we had a young, charismatic, energetic youth leader who would

work 60 hours a week for part-time pay and handle a youth group of 100 kids

single-handedly. I suppose most of these things could be important to a point. But

the truth is that for many years we’ve been focused on these “if onlys”, while

neglecting the most important item—a solid youth ministry program, a “real plan”. By “real plan”, I mean some-

thing more than showing up on Sunday afternoons at 4pm and playing a few games, eating, and having a

discussion that hopefully includes something Biblical.

Folks, I plead guilty. In all the years I’ve been involved in Barry’s youth ministry in some capacity, I’ve been

perfectly happy to coast along doing just what I described. And I had my own “if only” statement—if only our new

youth director gets up to speed soon, so I can start taking Sunday afternoons off. I probably uttered that phrase

once for every youth director we’ve had at Barry. But it was a thinking error. Without a solid foundation for youth

ministry, we will continue “starting over” every time we hire another youth director. And since the average

life-span of a youth director is about 18 months, we would be doing a lot of reinventing the wheel. Like a light

bulb attracts bugs, we expect the youth director to attract kids. When the youth director leaves, the kids drift

away, and the search for a new bulb begins (along with the hope that this one will last just a little longer).

There are a number of things that need to go into a youth ministry program, which I will discuss later. But before

we discuss the “what”, let’s discuss the “who”…who will develop this plan? The answer is simple—you will. Oh I’ll

help, as will Pastor Dennis, as will our board chair, and education committee. But we can’t do this without your

input. You see, in order for our youth ministry to be sustainable at Barry, it has to be developed from within Barry.

It has to be based on our values, our traditions, and our relationship with Jesus Christ. Otherwise it’s just another

off-the-shelf program that will come and go as quickly as a teenage fad. I believe that many of the values that

have held Barry Christian Church together for 175 years are the same values that need to build the foundation for

a sustainable youth ministry—hopefully one that will last another 175 years.

How can you help? For starters, you can help by sharing the values you see being lived at Barry Christian Church,

as well as the values you wish to see. Because a statement of values is one of the key components of a sustainable

youth ministry plan. Youth ministry is not an event, it’s a process.

I would be delighted to hear from you and brainstorm together! Call me in the church office 816-436-0462, or my cell 816-560-5661, or email me at [email protected]. Or of course, visit with me before or after Sunday services. Yes youth ministry is lots of work. But it’s also quite rewarding. If it wasn’t rewarding at some level then nobody would be doing it. But nothing good happens by pure accident. I read this analogy recently: If you have a group of twelve kids who don’t understand your illustrations and one of them wants to kill you, you have a youth group just like Jesus. Think about that for a bit folks—it wasn’t exactly easy for Jesus either. In peace, Jim

New Playground Scheduled for Installation!

It is a fitting tribute to the diligent endeavors of our youth and youth sponsors, that we can announce that the proceeds from the Youth Sponsored Bake Sale on Sunday, August 30th topped off the funding needed to secure the purchase and installation of the new playground! It is a wonderful image to consider that the hard work from our youth and the generosity of our congregation makes it possible for us to provide an enjoyable space for the youngest members of our congregation to play outside! With 53 families contributing, as well as Memorial Funds from the Dorothy Taylor, Bill Turner and Warren Plum Memorial Funds, and of course the $123.75 raised from the children who attended this past Summer’s Vacation Bible School program here at Barry, we were able to reach the $21,059 goal in six weeks! Steve Grider, of Recreation Installations, has placed the order for the Ultra Play Timber Land Playground and the installation should begin on Tuesday, September 22nd and will be completed by Friday, September 25th, ready for our children on the last Sunday of September, the 27th! For everyone’s generous support, we are genuinely grateful as we take this important step for the blessing and benefit of young families here at Barry Christian Church!

Fellowship Lunch - After Second Worship Service This Sunday, September 13, 2015

This coming Sunday, September 13th the Faithful Families Sunday School Class, is sponsoring a Fellowship Lunch of baked potatoes and salads after the second worship service. Although we have reached our goal for funding the playground, the class is asking for donations that will help fund the grass sod or seed for the grounds surrounding the new playground once it is installed later this month. The Faithful Families is a new and growing Sunday School class at Barry Christian Church, that consists of several of our church’s families with young children who will be enjoying the playground, so your support is greatly appreciated!

I used to think that God’s gifts were on shelves one above the other and that the taller we grew in Christian character, the more easily we should reach them. I find now that God’s gifts are on shelves one beneath the other and that it is not a question of growing taller but of stooping lower, and that we have to go down, always down, to get God’s best gifts. —F.B. Meyer

A busy new school and church year is upon us. Bless all who teach and learn, Lord, today and every day.
