Matthew Hudman [email protected] A couple of weeks ago, I preached about the importance of being “good soil,” meaning a place where people are nourished, loved, and grow in their faith. We must care for each other, providing both the attention and the space needed so that we all grow and go as God calls us. As I have thought further about that idea in the last couple of weeks, I have seen more and more how deep and rich the soil of this church is. The number of people who are helping with VBS this year is incredible. We have people helping decorate, helping with crafts, assisting with worship, leading music, telling stories, preparing snacks, and working to make sure all of the paperwork, administration, and details are not forgotten. We will welcome children who come to church every week and we will welcome children who have never been to our church before. Without any doubt, each and all of those children will be made to feel special, welcomed, and loved. And as they spend a little time in the rich soil of MDCC, my fervent prayer is that all of this will help them to know that they are loved by God. At the end of September, MDCC will host a CPA Youth Rally, the weekend of September 29 through October 1. Youth from across the Area will gather to play, sing, worship, serve, and grow closer together. As part of the event, we will also host the Rev. Dr. Chimiste Doriscar, a Disciples Global Missions Partner in Haiti, who will share his experiences with the youth, with adults that will gather on Saturday, September 30, and with all of us when he preaches on Sunday, October 1. It will be a weekend in which we care for and attend to youth across the area who are growing in their relationships with God. It will also be a weekend in which our own soil will be enriched and cared for as we listen to Dr. Doriscar talk about the work of doing the Gospel in Haiti. In between those events, we will continue raising funds for uniforms for Spring Branch students. We will have a fundraiser for Disciples Oaks in Gonzales. We will welcome our new organist, bless backpacks, have a youth lock-in, resume Bible studies, continue our book clubs, welcome back our choir and handbells, go to Sunday school, and worship every week. We will nourish ourselves and each other in the rich blessing of God’s love, so that each and every day we may seek to spread that love to the people we meet at school, at work, and in all the places of our lives. As I told the children a couple of weeks ago, you all are “good dirt.” And I give thanks that I am planted here with you. Peace, Matthew We would like to welcome our new organist, Phillip Durham to MDCC. Phillip is a life- long Houstonian and was born and raised in a Disciples of Christ family. He has over 35 years experience as a church musician for Disciple congregations. Phillip holds a double Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and Organ Performance as well as a Masters in Organ Performance, all from the University of Houston. He taught Elementary school music for almost 30 years. Phillip's first Sunday at Memorial Drive will be August 6. Please take a moment to introduce yourself at your first opportunity. Welcome, Phillip!

General Fund Income vs Expense

Cash Assets & Debt

Capital Campaign

Comments Our pledged income came back up a bit in June but still lower than budgeted and we are running a bit behind for the year. However our expenses were down for the month and so we are back in the black for the month. Our building income has dropped to about average for the first 6 months. We are still doing OK for the year and projections for rest of the year look OK as well. The capital campaign is officially over. We continue to receive some small donations and use the remaining balance for major repairs. If you have any questions, please ask me at church or send an email to [email protected] John E Lindley, Treasurer

Mark your calendars now for a special service on Sunday, August 20. All school-aged children are invited to bring their backpacks to worship that day as we will have a blessing of the backpacks during our children's moment. In addition, that Sunday will be the official kickoff of our children and youth mailboxes. If you have signed up to sponsor a mailbox, you will be given your assignment before then. If you want to sponsor a mailbox but have not registered yet, please let Matthew know. It will be a great day to be church so plan on attending!

We are almost finished with Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road?! This Sunday, Linda will lead us in Chapter 28. August 6, Chapter 29 to finish the book; August 13, New Book: Surprised By Hope, by N.T. Wright. Read Preface and Chapter 1. Everyone is welcome to join the discussion.

This discussion class is led by Joyce Stones and Patrick Gibbons. Our study is based on We Make the Road by Walking - A Year-Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation, and Activation, by Brian D. McLaren. In his introduction, Mr. McLaren declares that we play a role in choosing and creating our futures – as individuals and as communities. We can make the road by walking. We want to explore new possibilities, develop unfulfilled potential, discover new resources to bless, inspire, and enliven. Come feel God call you to walk into the future with faith, hope, and love.

Wednesday Bible study will resume on Wednesday, August 9, at 10:00am, in the Athens Room. Everyone is invited to join the discussion led by Rev. Matthew Hudman.

Thank you so much for the beautiful reception and worship service on June 25. It was so great to see everyone. Thank you also for all the special cards I have received and the day and everything else as well. My years as organist are a special treasure to me; a happy, joyful, fulfilling, and important time in my life. Thank you again for the privilege of serving as organist, pianist, and also knowing and working with the choir and congregation.

Our trip to Haiti gets closer!

Graduation for our students is almost here (Oct. 14)! We need your help! After graduation in Petit Goave, we are going back to Les Palmes (the mountain.) We will once again do an eye clinic. We will be dispensing mostly reading glasses and sunglasses. The dollar store has readers and sunglasses for only one dollar! Please help by bringing +1.50, +2.00, +2.25, +2.50 readers for us to take. Plus sunglasses of any kind are useful. Also if you have old glasses, we can get them read and use those. Also, we are collecting pencils and pens for school.

There is a place for items in the Giving Center. Thank you again for helping the people of Haiti!!

MAM work evening

You never know what tasks we will be doing at MAM on a Thursday evening. In July in was putting slip-proof pieces of foam rubber onto the ends of coat hangers as well as repurposing denim jeans into dog toys. MAM continues to work wonders with people in our communities. Last

year, MAM impacted the lives of over 25,000 people.

Please mark your calendars for August 10 from 6 - 8 p.m. to help with this vital community ministry.

MAM Back to School Uniforms

As of July 23, you have generously contributed $2,000 to the MAM Back to School Uniform drive. Thank you so much for the love that you show for our area children. Going back to a new school year with new clothes and shoes certainly makes a difference!
