VISION

What is the future we are working toward?

We envision Village Seven Presbyterian Church to be a body of believers devoted to making and equipping disciples of Jesus Christ who are compelled by grace

and love to proclaim the gospel in word and deed where they live, work, and play.

MISSION

What are we doing to move toward the vision?

Our mission is to make, equip and deploy disciples who live out and proclaim the Gospel through word and deed

in Colorado Springs, the West, and the World.

The Holy Scriptures shall be the basis of our beliefs and the guide for life and doctrine.

OUR VISION & MISSION

GLORY

Everything we do is for the glory of God and, therefore, done as an act of worship to Him. In all that we do, we desire to make His name great. We will put His glory above our own.

GRACE

Because God’s grace permeates all that we do, it also motivates all that we do. In all of our outreach, teaching, training, and ministry, we seek to equip people to live in step with the truth of the gospel through understanding their adoption and union with Christ.

TRUTH

In both our teaching and in our methodology, we seek to be Scriptural in all that we do. In defining what we mean by Scriptural, we believe that Reformed theology as expressed in the Westminster standards is a faithful expression of biblical truth. While we will always seek to make use of practical wisdom, we will not be governed by mere pragmatism but will seek to do everything with theological reflection.

OUR HISTORY

Village Seven Presbyterian Church (V7PC) began in 1972 as an outgrowth of Evangelical Presbyterian Church (later Grace Presbyterian Church), a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod (RPCES). On February 20, 1972, one hundred fifty people gathered at Carver Elementary School in the Village Seven area of Colorado Springs to hold the first worship service led by Rev. Bill Leonard, the organizing pastor. The first building (now Leonard Hall) was dedicated on June 30, 1974, on 5.4 acres the church had purchased.

The church property now sits on 12.6 acres and includes 3 additional buildings hosting a membership of over 1,500 people. In addition, the church also accommodates the Secondary Campus of Evangelical Christian Academy (ECA), an accredited PreK-12 Classical Christian School, which is an affiliate ministry of V7PC. The school was launched by Evangelical Presbyterian Church in 1971, a year before the start of V7PC. (see Campus Map on page 11)

Since 1982 V7PC has been a member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and is the largest church in the Rocky Mountain Presbytery, which includes churches in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. V7PC is a member of the Western Church Planting Network and in the last four decades has planted four PCA churches in the Colorado Springs area: Forestgate Presbyterian Church, Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church, Westside Church, and Grace and Peace Church. Forestgate Church is preparing to plant Waypoint Church as the newest PCA church in Colorado Springs.

In its almost 50 year existence, Village Seven Presbyterian Church has been blessed to have been served by only 4 senior pastors:

The Rev. William (Bill) B. Leonard, Jr. from 1972-1979“If anything was accomplished during our many years of ministry in Colorado Springs, it was accomplished by God’s Holy Spirit working in and through His people” –Bill Leonard

The Rev. A. Bernhard (Bernie) Kuiper from 1979-1997“The history of V7PC is, as it should be, not so much one of buildings, or even a group of people, but rather a view of the working of the gracious hand of God” –Bernie Kuiper

The Rev. A. Joseph Wheat from 1998-2005“One thing I know for sure: God has great plans for a church that attends to biblical values, wants to glorify Him more than anything, and walks in faith” –Joseph Wheat

The Rev. Mark Bates from 2007-2021“V7PC has a rich heritage of ministry and has a strong commitment to serving Colorado Springs, church planting throughout the West, and sending missionaries all over the World” –Mark Bates

OUR 7 PRINCIPLES OF CORPORATE WORSHIP

1. Worship is for the glory of God – Psalm 29:1-2

2. Worship is governed by Scripture – WCF 21:1

3. Worship is for the edification of the believer – Colossians 3:16

a. Worship is formative as worshippers encounter the living God

b. Worship is a dialogue between God and His people

4. Worship is evangelistic for the unbeliever – 1 Corinthians 14:23-25

5. Worship should be properly contextualized; it must be both biblical and in the cultural expression of the people the church is sent to reach – Acts 15

6. Worship is participatory and not a spectator event – 1 Peter 2:9

7. The sermon is an element of worship and is a celebration of what God has done for His people as well as a call for them to live in His grace – WLC #160

WORSHIP & MUSIC

WORSHIP & MUSIC (continued)

7

WORSHIP AT VILLAGE SEVEN

We currently practice blended worship which means we seek to utilize music (whether congregational, vocal, or instrumental) that is theologically accurate, spiritually compelling, and reflective of the beauty and glory of God regardless of the style or instrumentation.

Pre-COVID: We had a more traditional service at 8:30 am followed by a more contemporary service at 11:00 am. The music at the traditional service was led primarily by a 60 voice choir accompanied by piano and organ as well as the frequent use of handbells, full orchestra, and brass/woodwind/string ensembles. The contemporary service was led by a vocal team accompanied by piano, keyboard, drums, guitars, with occasional orchestral instruments.

During COVID: We were restricted to 400 congregants at each Sunday morning worship service resulting in two identical, blended services at 9:30 am (live-streamed) and 11:00 am. The restrictions limited the number of musicians we could have leading each service varying from 5 to 35 and included vocal teams of 4 – 11 singers, percussion, guitars, piano, keyboard, organ, with occasional string ensembles, brass ensembles, woodwind ensembles, and handbells.

Transitioning Out Of COVID: We recognize that transitioning out of COVID restrictions is a fluid situation and is subject to change. At the start of Summer 2021 we moved to one 9:00 AM blended worship service followed by weekly communities and classes for all ages at 10:30 AM. When in-person weekly attendance is around 1100-1200, about 80% of the sanctuary’s capacity, we intend to return to two services. In the meantime, we will continue to aim to worship God according to his Word, with songs both ancient and modern rich in content, and in a way accessible to both those who have grown up in the faith and those who have not. With restrictions lifted our choral ministry will continue to grow. Our music will continue to be led by a gifted music leader/pianist, a skilled organist, and a talented arranger/composer who writes music to fit our needs and skills.
