Your Priest-in-Charge Writes Dear Friends,
I invite you into the world of Gerard Manley Hopkins a 19th Century poet. This poem
was written in 1877:
“The world is charged with the grandeur of God.” Though several senses of the word
“charge” may be relevant in interpreting this statement, the primary sense seems to be
of electric force. God is like an electric charge present in the world as in lightning. This
image is continued in the statement that this divine force “will flame out.” While con-
veying the idea of a lightning strike implicit in the image of an electrical charge, this
new image also suggests the Pentecostal tongue of flame, which introduces one of the
aspects of God’s presence in the world as the Holy Spirit, the idea with which the poet
ends. It is a sonnet that works as much on the ear by its use of alliterative sounds, as
well as working on the imagination with its imagery of “shining from shook foil”, and
the overflowing well-like image evocatively drawn in the line, “There lives the dearest
freshness deep down things”. Although we live in a world where our environment has
been compromised such that “all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil” God
still sustains his creation with ever fresh up welling of life. The final two lines juxta-
poses an image of a “bent”, or out-of-true-shape world, and the “bending” over our
world of the Holy Ghost like some mother bird or bright angel offering to love and
nurture us into the full life God offers us in Christ. It is a poem of hope despite the
bleakness of things. Its oohs and ahs convey a sense of surprised wonderment at dis-
covering God’s continual care and love for all that he has made. If we would only look
up to the One who offers us nourishment and new life brought us in Christ and to
which the Creation still points.
In this month Christians celebrate the Cross, where all that is out of true alignment,
bent into distorting shapes by hatred, greed, and lovelessness, can be put back into their
original balance and harmony. Christ through his resurrection has ascended to sit on
the throne at God’s right hand. From there He bends over our world in prayer to nour-
ish us. May our eyes be opened through Creation and Christ to have our lives turned
around and brought back into true alignment.
Every blessing Norman
THE WORLD is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.
And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs—
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

‘Spectacular’ Flower Festival
This rather special Festival extends over the late Bank Holiday weekend: Friday
to Monday (22-25 May). Doors will open on Friday and Sunday at 2 pm; and on
Saturday and Monday at 10 am. It closes every evening at 8 pm. Entrance is £5
(accompanied children free), including entry to walk around The Old Rectory
Garden. Refreshments are available throughout.
The Rev. Canon Colin Reid will officially open the festival at 2.30pm on the
Friday (22nd.)
Although church-based, most organisations in the village are involved as well
as very many talented individuals and groups. The flower arrangements are situ-
ated in all the corners and windows of the church, as well as round the pulpit,
font, altar and chancel, porch, pillars and pew ends. The churchyard and lych
gate are also included as well as ‘St Mungo’s Well’. In addition, displays of
historic wedding dresses and christening gowns are complemented by floral
arrangements.
Arrangements for parking will be clearly marked from the centre of the village.

CALDBECK MOTHERS’ UNION
Tuesday 21 April ‘Under fives and their families’
Rev Lucy Lunn 2.00pm
Methodist Chapel Room
CALDBECK MOTHERS’ UNION
The February meeting of Mothers’ Union was a “Home Brew” where mem-
bers were invited to share their thoughts on this year’s theme of Believing,
Belonging, Behaving. Ann Wade welcomed a good company and opened
with prayers for absent members, due to sickness and accidents. The reading
from John 20 verses 24-29, brought to our attention “doubting” Thomas’s ex-
clamation of belief when meeting his risen Lord. Ann reminded us of the El-
vis Presley song “I Believe”. The lyrics include “I believe above a storm the
smallest prayer can still be heard. I believe that someone in the great some-
where hears every word”. Later, one member recited a poem and produced
the CD “I believe” for us all to hear….. a God given coincidence!
Barbara Riches spoke first about the relationship between the three “B’s” ,
followed by other talks of personal experiences relating to one of or more the
theme words. One member spoke of how precious a letter had become to her,
having received it from her twin sister, telling of how she had come to faith in
Jesus towards the end of her life.
Another member had brought along the precious possession of a replica
Changi cross. The significance was that it had belonged to her grandfather,
who had been captured at the fall of Singapore. He was imprisoned in Changi
where Sgt. Harry Stodgen had built a Christian cross out of a used artillery
shell. This cross, made with loving care, had become a symbol of hope to the
prisoners.
To end this somewhat poignant time of sharing, another poem was recited
about faith. There was a lovely atmosphere and the bring and buy stall which
had been set up to boost the funds was well supported. A homemade Tea was
enjoyed by all.

with Northern Fells Group Caldbeck and District Walking for Health scheme meets Tuesdays fortnightly at 2pm from Men in Sheds, Caldbeck Green. Next Walk Dates: April 14
th, April 28
th
We are part of the Ramblers Macmillan Scheme of Walking for Health and offer walks which accommodate differing health and fitness needs. Our easy walks usually last about an hour We vary the routes taken each week and usually have enough walk leaders to offer both a short and a medium length walk each fortnight. Afterwards we enjoy refreshments and a chat. New walkers are always welcome. Experts recommend 150 minutes of physical activity a week for adults – but only a third of us achieve this. Regular physical activity helps to – increase life expectancy, improve the strength of our muscles and bones, reduce our blood pressure and increase our levels of “good” cholesterol[HDL]. Physical activity also helps to manage conditions like cancer, diabetes, heart and lung problems and depression. Walking is great for keeping our minds healthy too. When we walk, our brains release chemicals that make us feel good. That means walking can help us cope with depression, stress and anxiety. If you think you would be interested in taking part please contact either of us. Helen Sturges, Caldbeck, Sebergham and Welton 016974 78556 [email protected]
Barbara Stoddart, Westward and Rosley 016973 42452
In addition Peter Burgess is organizing regular longer walks up to 3hrs
with historical / natural / geological themes. So please contact him for
further details on 016973 49741 [email protected]

This poem was included in the Caldbeck Parish Magazine in
February 1915.
THE CALDBECK “ROLL OF HONOUR”
The following rhymes by Mr James Chapman, Midtown, Caldbeck, have been sent to
us. They are supposed to express the thanks of the War Office to the parish for its
patriotic response to the call for men:-
My dear old friends at Caldbeck
Accept my warmest thanks
For the nice young lads you’ve sent
To join Lord Kitchener’s ranks.
I marvel at their smartness,
Which would credit any town,
I never thought that Caldbeck
Could send a “Bertie Brown.”
As time goes on, dear comrades,
I’ll want the ranks to swell,
But you’ve done your bit at Caldbeck
With Joe and Willie Bell.
The Germans say our Army
Is nothing but a myth,
But they’ll alter their opinion
When we send out Private Smith.
We’ll drive them into Berlin
Like coneys in a net,
For we’ve a splendid army now,
Including Ted Prim Ett.
There’s Gwordie Mark, a good old pal,
Who left his work at school,
As he came I heard him say,
“Remember Hartlepool!”
And then there’s Georgie Richardson,
A lad known far and near;
He’ll keep the Allies to the front
And Germans in the rear.
They’ve robbed and burned and plundered,
Does everything that’s bad,
But they’ve not begun to reckon yet
With Johnnie Thoburn’s lad.
We shall wage this war to a finish,
We mean to see it through,
And could you send a few more lads
Like Edgar Ashbridge’s two?
If they should join the Lonsdales,
Their lot with them to throw,
They’ll mate with Gwordie Dobson,
Who comes from Ratten Row.
Urge them to join the Army
Before it be too late
If they can’t come with Winder lads,
Then come with Isaac Gate.
And when the war is over
Caldbeck will laud her sons
Who sacrificed “Home Comforts”
And went to fight the “Huns.”
(Note – Thirty out of the fifty names on the Caldbeck “Roll of Honour” are natives of the
parish, and includes four sons of the late John Graves – William, Alfred, John and Frank
– all born at Hesket Hall. Three of them are on foreign service.)
From Carlisle Journal of Tuesday, January 26.

Aggregate for year 327.40 mm (12.89ins)
Notes. Our rainfall in February was just below the ten year average for the month
which is 68.15 mm (02.68 ins) and it's too early to predict how wet the year
might be. February 2014 was our wettest since 2002 and that year we re-
corded 227.10 mm (08.94 ins) and it went on to be one of our wettest whereas
2014 was one of our drier years! Our rain high day was on Thursday 26 Feb-
ruary when we recorded 015.50 mm (0.61 ins). We recorded rain on only 16
days during the month and a third of the total fell over 2 days of the month i.e.
Sunday 22nd and Thursday 26th. We had snow lying here for the first 3 days of
the month before it thawed.
February temperatures 2015
Average maximum day temperature 06.36˚C (43.45˚F)
Average minimum night temperature 01.11˚C (34.00˚F)

Notes.
Our day time temperature for the month was just about on our ten year average
which is 06.67°C (44.04°F) and our night time temperature for the month was
similar to our average over ten years of 01.37°C (34.74°F) The first half of the
month remained cold, carrying on where January left off, and gradually we
saw warmer temperatures as Atlantic fronts came across after the middle of the
month. We recorded frost on 8 days of the month and these days were from
Sunday 1st to Sunday 8th February. After the 8th February we did not record
frost for the remainder of the month.
Wind.

Saturday 28 February of 36 mph from the SSE at 19.00 hrs. The dominant wind
direction for February was from the SSE which is not unusual for February.
There were very few calm days during the month and for the first 8 days the

CALDBECK WI REPORT, MARCH 2015
Eighteen members were welcomed by president, Mrs Elsie Bell, and the
minutes of the February meeting read by secretary, Mrs Trish Richardson.
Details of outside meetings were circulated and Mrs Pat Shaw will represent
us at the Spring Council meeting. The County News was read and members
were asked for thoughts for a new federation logo. The annual financial
statement was circulated.
Our speaker, Sandra Pringle of Woolsty Crafts, Wigton, was introduced and
she divided us into groups to have a go at crocheting or knitting flowers and
also making twisted ribbon roses, which literally got us ‘in a twist’! Sandra
was thanked by Mrs Bridget Archer.
We then resumed the business meeting over tea and biscuits. Members were
invited to submit a photo of Caldbeck for next year’s calendar. A venue for
our 95th birthday party in June was discussed and a firm decision will be
taken at the April meeting. It is hoped to base our contribution to the church
flower festival on our anniversary as the festival theme is ‘A Moment in
Time’. The competition for a knitted item was won by: 1st, Teresa Richard-
son; 2nd, Sheila Barker.
THURSDAY CLUB, MARCH 2015
The meeting started with a minute’s silence to mark the passing of Ma-
mie Potts and Frank Matthews.
At the AGM in February it was decided to continue the club but with a
more hands-on approach, with its members sharing some of the duties,
responsibilities and decisions. Consequently at the March meeting Mrs
Kathleen Davie acted as chairman for the day. A list of possible speak-
ers was discussed and a vote was taken about the route of the May out-
ing.
Mrs Davie then welcomed our speaker, Antoinette Ward, to talk about
her early days in Caldbeck as a nurse 40 years ago. She recalled how
she was soon made welcome although a southerner unaware of the nice-
ties of dialect! She soon lost her heart to the village and its inhabitants
and vows never to leave.

THE COMMUNITY ROOMS, HESKET NEWMARKET CHAPEL 1.30pm – 3.30pm
New knitters and donations of wool will be welcomed. Knit and natter for causes that matter!
Fundraising for Hesket Newmarket Play Area.
After Christmas we had a ‘Lucky Squares’ competition in The Old Crown, which raised £64 for the Play Area. Thank you to everyone who purchased a square. The winners, of the voucher for a meal at the pub, were Paul and Jo Richardson.
This was followed up in February by the Valentines Quiz, again at The Old Crown. Thirteen teams took part, and they were tested on topics as diverse as Sport, Spellings and Romance. As each round was scored a really competitive buzz developed. The final scores were very close, but congratulations go to ‘Stoney Ground’, the team that came top, by a single point. This team was headed up by Henry and Anne Little.
We are grateful to George for giving us the use of the pub for the evening and to Ken and Pauline Wolfenden for supplying the sound system. A big thank you to the individuals and businesses that donated raffle prizes, and of course to every-one who came along and supported the event. The evening raised £226 which will go towards the insurance and maintenance of the Play Area at Hesket New-market.
Annual Charity Plant Sale

Any queries or offers of help to Sue Braithwaite: 016974 78504

Report on Westward Flower Club’s February meeting
Shirley Martin first said all our thoughts are with June and family, then intro-
duced Katherine Pearson from Inspirations Flower Shop in Workingon. Kathe-
rine's flowers arrangements were based on her favourite things. The first ar-
rangement was in a large pink and white cup and saucer. This included green-
ery, carnations , roses and alstroemerias. This was finished off with a cat, a ket-
tle and brown paper packages tied up with string. The second arrangement had
greenery, carnations, alstroemerias and chrysanthemum. Katherine finished this
off with a football and football shirt. The next arrangement was in a tall vase.
This had greenery including aspidistra leaves, eucalyptus, carnations, gerberas,
a lovely orchid, pompom chrysanthemums. This was finished off with beige
hearts.
The last arrangement was started with pieces of bark. This also had pussy wil-
low, catkins, greenery, statis, moss, carnations and roses and was decorated
with a mini manual, a mini car and some magazines about minis. Prizes were
won by Elizabeth Hird, Jenny Bowness, Shirley Bragg and Angela Scott. The
next meeting is on Monday 30th March and is a demonstration by Margaret
Abbott from Aspatria.

A vote was taken about whether or not to continue the club. There were

share the job on a rota basis. Kathleen Davie will chair the March meet-
ing.
Treasurer: Liz Boydell will continue.
Speakers: Members were asked to make suggestions. Antoinette Ward
had agreed to speak on 12 March.
Outings: Isobel Coulthard and Eleanor Benson will organise the May out-
ing and Liz Boydell the October outing.
Raffle: Kathleen Davie will continue.
Refreshments: Isobel Coulthard and Joyce Stott will continue.
Reports: Eleanor Benson will continue.
Treasurer’s Report: Liz Boydell presented the accounts. The proposal to
accept them was made by Kathleen Davie and seconded by Mina Barker.
Subs will remain at £5 per annum.
Chairman: The chairman thanked everyone for their work.
It was agreed that new members are needed as numbers have got very low.
(Only 13 at the AGM). The club meets at 2.00pm on the second Thursday
of the month in the parish hall. We have a lot of very interesting speakers
covering a wide range of subjects. After the speakers have done their stuff
there is time for refreshments and to mingle and have a good ‘crack’. The
club is intended for retired people of any age and it would be good to have
some youngsters in their 60s and 70s! New members will be made very
welcome. We look forward to seeing you.
Tony Ryan, Outgoing Chairman.

CONCERTS IN CALDBECK
When I think of the March 8th concert the word “splendid” comes to mind. There was a splendid attendance and a splendid performance was given by the clarinettist Emma Johnson and the Northern String Quartet. It was hard to believe that until 6.00 p.m on Saturday March 7th Emma and the Quartet had never met each other, yet less than twenty four hours later they blended perfectly in a delightful concert.
I would like to pay tribute to all who helped, especially those who prepared the hall and served the refreshments. Team work is the key to most suc-cessful enterprises and so it was here.
The next concert will be on June 28th. Please put the date in your diaries and on your calendars. Details in due course.

FELLVIEW SCHOOL NEWS, FEBRUARY 2015
Yet again we have all been very busy. All the pupils did really well at the County
Key Steps Gymnastics Finals. We took the whole school along to see our teams per-
form and they were a very well behaved and enthusiastic audience. It was lovely to
be able to see the pupils compete and watch their routines and even better to cheer
them as they stood on the podiums to collect their medals. The Key Steps 1 team were
3rd, the Key Steps 2 team were 5th and our Key Steps 3 team were 1st.
This week has been great fun as we focused on preparing for Science Week. A num-
ber of STEM Graduates have been in school working with the pupils on various sci-
ence activities. The classes have been buzzing with focused chatter as pupil and
graduates investigated a Crime Scene and identified the culprit from finger and foot
print analysis. Mini Beast hunting produced some interesting finds as did experi-
menting with yeast and bread making. At one point there was music drifting into my
office from the Yr5/6 class, and when I went to investigate, found lots of little robots
dancing around the floor in time to the music. They had been programmed by the
pupils during their day of robotics and rocket making.
The pupils and graduates have enjoyed working together and it has amused me greatly
to see the pupils waiting for the graduates to rush back from their lunch in the village
so they could all play together out on the playing field. I think we will all miss them
once they leave. Everyone is working towards our final event for Science Week when
the children will be peer teachers to the Yr 3/4 pupils from Rosley C of E Primary
School who have been invited to join us for the morning. Our pupils will be leading
the science morning for their visitors as they learn about the various science and com-
puter science activities on offer that day. They are very excited about it all and are
really looking forward to having Rosley pupils visit their school.

ROSLEY WI, FEBRUARY 2014
Jean Harper-Tarr presided over the February meeting with seventeen members
and one guest present. Lynda Huckell acted as secretary in the absence of Jean
Simpson. An invitation has been received from Drumburgh and Glasson W.I. for
9th June, which will be accepted. Catering was discussed for the Posh Tea to be
held in the Millenium Room of Rosley Hall on 4th March (in aid of grow a ten-
ner ). Some members have knitted teddies for tragedies which will be taken to
the spring council meeting on 18th April.
The speaker needed no introduction as it was an old friend to Rosley W.I., Nor-
man Godfrey from the parish. Norman showed stunning slides of cycling through
Scotland's Western Isles accompanied by Mendelssohn's violin concerto. Janet
Bell gave the vote of thanks. The competition for a Scottish souvenir was won by
J. Harper-Tarr with J.Britton 2nd. J. Osborne won the raffle. Hostesses were the
Sandy Brow group.
Rosley Reading Group. We meet about once a month in
Rosley Village Hall on a Friday afternoon.
We discuss fiction, non-fiction, po-etry.
This term's theme is Scottish writing.

SEBERGHAM WI Open Meeting with Bring and Share Supper
‘China by Motorcycle’
Michael Cowen
Tuesday 14 April Sebergham Village Hall
SEBERGHAM WI REPORT, MARCH 2015
I was unable to attend the February meeting but the members had been highly enter-
tained by Pat Newsham talking about her experiences as a guide at Dalemain for
eleven years. She talked about the history of the house, the paintings and of the family
who live there. She mentioned the little ‘mouse house’ that aroused much curiosity.
Mrs Newham was also very enthusiastic about the celebrated and successful
‘Marmalade Festival’ started by Janie Hasel MaCosh, which took place in February.
In March Sebergham WI has its birthday and it amazes me how quickly this seems to
come around. We have begun a tradition of celebrating this with a meal out. This year
we again returned to Denton House in Hesket Newmarket for a truly delicious meal
and a very enjoyable evening, amidst much chatter.
President, Nancy Hullock had welcomed everyone before the start of the meal and
then with the coffee, conducted the business meeting. The invitation to the Bucking-
ham Palace garden Party was passed round and two members are keen on going!
Margaret Mattinson announced that she has raised £50 with her quiz for the ‘Grow a
Tenner’ challenge. We are all absolutely delighted. Margaret was thanked for her
splendid effort and a cheque for £60 has been handed in to WI office.
The competition for a coaster was judged by the two young waiters and first was
Audrey Asbridge with Margaret Mattinson second.
The April meeting will be in Sebergham Village Hall and is an open meeting where
everyone is welcome. The speaker is Michael Cowen (accompanied by his motor
bike) on a talk about his motor bike ride to China.

A splendid £1122 raised at the Evening of
Entertainment event!
A splendid Evening of Entertainment at Caldbeck Hall on February 13th
was attended by around 90 people and raised £1122 due to the hard work
and generosity of those attending. We were entertained brilliantly by the
duet Chapin & Wickwar whose music is mainly composed and written by
Sue & Lisa themselves. They did sell some CDs on the night and donated
all the money from them straight back to our charities. Alison Scott's Band
was superb, some of the band had quite a journey to be with us and we are
very grateful to them for coming and giving their time only for a very small
donation towards their costs. Again we are privileged to have such talent as
Alison's in the area.
Delicious cottage pies were kindly made by Helen Kerry, Gail Dewis,
Carol Secombe, Carol & Geoff Hine, Rhona King and Pat and myself. All
the much admired trio of desserts were made by Margaret Brough. We are
indebted for the extra help we received in the kitchen and bar from Gail
Dewis, Jay Maclean, Lorraine Evans, Rhona King and Ian Shaw.
Both Caldbeck Area First Responders Team and Eden Lifeline Project re-
ceived £561 for which both charities are eternally grateful.
Many thanks to all who supported this event

CALDBECK FAIRTRADE AND LOCAL COFFEE
MORNING
St.Kentigern’s Church, Caldbeck hosted a busy Fairtrade and Local Coffee Morning
on Saturday February 28th . The event celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight and 20 years of
Fairtrade products. We were delighted to welcome Mr. Alvaro Pop, a cocoa farmer
from Belize whose produce carries the Fairtrade Mark. He was able to share with us
the benefit to himself and other local famers and the wider community of producing
cocoa for the Fairtrade market , specifically for Green and Black’s organic chocolate.
The Fairtrade mark means they are guaranteed a minimum price for their cocoa plus a
premium which is invested in community projects.
As well as promoting Fairtrade products, the event sought to celebrate local producers
from around the Caldbeck area. Stallholders included Absolom Jewellery, Jill’s Jams,
The Caldbeck Cooperative crafters, cards and jewellery from Carole Hine, baskets
and pottery from Kathryn and Richard Rawson and fairly traded clothing from Victo-
ria’s, Penrith. There were products from 2 local charities; handicrafts from Commu-
nity Action Nepal (CAN) and cards and foodstuffs from the Northern Fells Group.
Cakes made from Fairtrade and local produce were provided for the cake stall as well
as for the refreshments. Thanks to all the stallholders for supporting the event and oth-
ers who contributed and helped. Thanks also to Isobel Coulthard for judging the Fair-
trade Teabread competition which was won by Barbara Riches. There was a quiz
about tea which was won by Isobel Coulthard and Edward Spratt. A recipe card pro-
duced by the local Fairtrade Group, featuring recipes provided by local organisations
using local and Fairtrade ingredients was launched. These are available in local shops
The event was organised by the Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket Fairtrade Group. A
donation of £100 from the proceeds of the refreshments is being donated to the Ma-
lawi Flood appeal via the Fairtrade Foundation.

Rory Stewart MP “Border Country”
Drawing on his experiences of life in the border areas of Iraq and Afghanistan, Rory Stewart uncovers the lost history of this familiar frontier in a beautiful land-scape. As an historian and MP, Rory Stewart believes the building of Hadrian’s Wall was the single most important event in Britain’s history. Rory spent five weeks walking in Cumbria and the Borders meeting experts and local people; exploring the impact of Rome’s occupation and departure; and tells the story of how the powerful new kingdom of Northumbria was born in Britain’s lost Middle-land. It was a thirty nine mile day, and twelve of those fourteen hours were spent in almost empty space.

Notes from Caldbeck Parish Council
On May 7th there will be the Parish Council Election. Would you or someone
you know be interested in becoming a Parish Councillor and serving your
parish in this vital way? Contact the Clerk, Antoinette Ward (see below),
for information and for a Nomination Form.
The Parish Allotments are situated in a field rented from Isel Estates in Hesket
Newmarket. The Waiting List has reduced as allotments have become
available and there is now only one person on the list. Pease contact the
Clerk for further information and/or to put your name on the waiting list.
Parish Clerk Appointment. The Council is pleased to announce that Elizabeth
Clark from Bolton Low Houses has been appointed to take over from An-
toinette Ward as Parish Clerk on May 1st.
The 73/73A Bus service to Keswick starts again for spring and summer on
28th
March. Please see the Transport noticeboard in Caldbeck, and the Bus
Timetable in Hesket Newmarket for details - the more of us that use this
service the likelier we will keep it!
Dog fouling. This is causing a lot of worry and upset – it doesn’t take many
people not clearing up after their dog to produce an unpleasant situation for
the next person walking that way (round the pond, down Friar Row, along
the Straits are all areas badly affected by dog fouling). The Parish Council
asks that if you know of a time and place when offenders are out and about
please telephone Allerdale Dog Wardens (01900 702800) with the informa-
tion and they will attend and monitor and warn or fine offenders - £75 fixed
penalty fine. Both our villages are covered by Allerdale’s Byelaw on dog
fouling and in addition to breaking the law there are serious health issues
for both people, especially children, and animals from dog fouling. Aller-
dale BC supplies dog scoop bags and the Parish Council is once again ar-
ranging for these to be available locally.
Hesket Lonning Foot and Cycle Path. The Land Agent, Alick Grieve, is un-
derway with visiting each landowner to discuss and plan the details of work
needed for the path through each individual field. The Working Group is meeting on the 19th March.

beck, CA7 8EU. Telephone: 016974 78220. Email; [email protected]

CALDBECK AREA FIRST RESPONDERS
New members; please join us; thank you and remaining team training dates
Our responder team is delighted to announce that we have recently gained two new responders in the area, they are Dave Dewis and Graeme Rumney and we look forward to welcoming them to our team. We are still in need of new responders in the area and do have another two awaiting training but due to the huge area we cover more members would be welcome. No medical experience is necessary, just a desire to help in an emergency and the ability to do it. Full training is given by NWAS and regular training and support are given by the team.
As ever we are indebted to the community for their support to the team. We do have members of the community who sponsor a pager or give a regular donation to the team. One very generous recent donation from the Miller family in memory of Michael Miller bought our second cPAD in Caldbeck. We are constantly having to renew equipment so everything is much appreciated. We are very grateful for the £521 we have just re-ceived from the Evening of Entertainment event in Caldbeck.
Remaining training dates for the team are as follows: Monday 23rd March at Caldbeck Parish Hall, Thursday 9th April at Wellfoot House, Monday 11th May, venue TBC, Tuesday 16th June at Wellfoot, Wednes-day 15th July at Millhouse Village Hall, No August date, Monday 14th September at Millhouse Village Hall, Tuesday 13th October Caldbeck Parish Hall, Thursday 12th November ASSESSMENTS at Wellfoot House, Wednesday 25th November at Millhouse Village Hall, and Thurs-day 10th December at Millhouse Village Hall. There will also be a pre-assessment meeting if anyone needs to catch up on any missed units. Please put these dates in your diary now.

CALDBECK & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
10th Annual General Meeting
The 10th AGM of the Gardening Club was held Wednesday 11 February with
a smaller attendance than is usual, which was a pity because the formal ses-
sion seldom lasts for more than 20 minutes! Our chair for the 10 years we
have been going, Marjorie Watson, welcomed the 20 or so present. We were
reminded that in that time we had some 74 speakers, visited over 35 gardens,
enjoyed 10 Christmas meals as a club, held many workshops (making troughs,
willow weaving, Christmas decorations to name but a few), many field trips
(including wild flowers, native grasses, fungi forage) and a 3-day trip to gar-
dens in Dumfries and Galloway in 2014 and a memorable 6-day trip in 2013
to Normandy visiting 6 gardens including Monet’s Giverny garden. The Club
has also raised over £3,000 for local charities in that time. The Committee
was re-elected and Marjorie remains as Chair, Liz Mounsey as Treasurer and
Penny Sutton as Secretary.
The evening concluded with Adam Beeston reminding us with the aid of pho-
tographs, and anecdotes many of which came from the members present, of
our more recent trips. Here’s to many more years to come!
